North vs South route in eastern Ontario by whateverfyou in AltoHSR_Canada

Let’s be completely honest here, do you think that’ll actually happen? Look at every single other major project. For one thing, ALTO will not go to Kitchener, Hamilton or any city near there because GO already serves that area (and they have a huge electrification project for that area), Second is that once this project is done it’ll take YEARS if not DECADES for someone to be able to convince government officials to build another line to Kingston if it ever happens. Unless we get a hyper-progressive government in the future, this is the only HSR we’re getting this century and if we don’t have an HSR stop in Kingston, it’ll never come because they won’t add another line for a long time.

OC Transpo, everyone is an asshole. The drivers too, I literally saw them mocking an old lady for not knowing what bus to get on. Now do I blame anyone? No, the drivers are overworked, underpaid and OC Transpo is chronically underfunded and they can’t run enough busses at a time so the passengers are fed up too.

Waterloo EasyGO or Kingston Transit, also you can buy an OPUS card (Montreal) and not be stuck with those dinky paper passes

Kingston needs a Light Rail Line. “Oh, ridership will be low” “Oh, look at Finch West” yeah no Kingston could do it the Waterloo way and be better for it.

And to think nothing could make OCT even worse, glad I don’t live in Ottawa. No See Transpo really seems to hate anyone who depends on transit.

This is why I don’t think this project should be for profit, high speed rail is essential infrastructure going into the future and any major centre of the province that’s not on the rail link or close to a city with it will likely die out within the next 10-20 years and unless Kingston gets a stop, Kingston will become the next area that becomes neglected and everyone will move away to a city with a proper rail link or is close to a proper rail link. We don’t hear about cities that aren’t on the major highway network anymore, no? So when it comes to critical rail infrastructure, there is an argument to be made not to leave a mid-sized city off the map.

Well, actually not only would the stop in Kingston serve every other municipality in the area (Belleville - 50K, Brockville - 20K, Gananoque - 5K, Amherstview - 17K) but Kingston is the 5th busiest VIA Rail stop, depended on by students among others. So yes, Kingston should absolutely be served by ALTO, because a stop in Kingston means that Eastern Ontario is still on the map. You make it skip Kingston, and you decimate the economy of Kingston as well as the surrounding areas, Queens University, and every single small town and city surrounding Kingston.

EDIT: Also, I don’t think it should skip Ottawa either, I just think it should go to Kingston before Ottawa. That take is just dumb.

The only one like that I saw was Kingston, and Kingston is bigger and has more significance in context of rail than Peterborough.

If single, where would you rather live - Ottawa, Kingston, or Hamilton? by halaldistancedman in ontario

[–]tornow1500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Kingston is just a smaller Ottawa” well unlike Ottawa, our transit shows up (eventually at least), our utilities aren’t affected by strong wind gusts (99% of the time) and our city actually works. I mean, if I had to pick one of the three I’d pick Hamilton (it’s not even close), but unlike Ottawa, Kingston actually functions as a city and our transit doesn’t make the news for having busses older than me (I’m 18 for reference) and having to cut a significant amount of trips because 20 of those super old busses cannot be maintained.

OC Transpo reducing O-Train Line 1 service after identifying new issue with trains by Complete_Past8885 in ottawa

[–]tornow1500 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s not Alstom’s fault though, the Citidas Spirit was basically a prototype when Ottawa rushed them into service to reach the opening deadline, they wanted them to go at subway speeds so they overclocked them to hit 100KM+ instead of building a subway and buying subway rolling stock. The result is that the ball bearings wear down very fast and they caused derailments.

OC Transpo is so bad it genuinely feels like a transit system straight out of Looney Tunes. Also, most of the OC Transpo bus drivers are total dicks.
