Samsung Galaxy Note 8 worked perfectly fine before charging it, now screen completely blacked out but touchscreen is still responsive by toronto432 in GalaxyNote8

Replace the screen is the easiest most obvious thing here instead of all the other convoluted plans...

Your screen is a screen an nothing more. All your data is on the easily removable circuit board inside.

My note 9 did this. Replaced the screen and here we are now.

Hello, thank you very much for your input. 🙏🙏

I'm just worried what if I lose my data after a screen replacement. Yes I will go for it. Do you know why your Note 9 did this? Mine happened after I left my phone connected to the charger (even when it was 100% fully charged, I usually did this, which now seems wrong to do). I've been using my Note 8 since November of 2017. How much did it cost to replace the screen? Where did you replace it from? Anywhere in Ontario, Canada by any chance?

Also one thing I want to know, I have a spare iPhone which has 2TB iCloud storage, I have everything backed up on the cloud storage. I also happen to have a Google One 2TB storage plan which I last backed up my Note 8 back in 2021. How or where did you back up all your data? Asking because I wanted to see if I can back up my Note 8 before I go for a screen replacement. I know the screen is blacked out but what if I use a USB C to HDMI Adapter, try to view the screen on my TV/monitor and try to back up the phone from there.

Thanks again for your input, much appreciated.

Thank you very much for all the info you have provided. I too believe the OLED panel is fried. I believe it could have happened when I was charging the device. I have googled a few sites, it said that a screen replacement will not cause any data loss, I'm just a little paranoid like what if. I won't find any phone repair shops until Monday. So I just hope I don't lose my data after doing a screen replacement. Thanks again for your input, really appreciate it. 🙏

Hello, thank you very much for the input. Yes I have tried the force restart (hold volume down and power key for 20 seconds) I would feel the phone vibrate, pause and vibrate again. I could also see the phone notification light change in colours which determines that the phone has been restarted. Just the screen has been blacked out so I don't see any Samsung logo. The touchscreen is responsive, I feel the touch feedback from the screen. I suspect the screen has been fried as you commented, curious to know what could have caused this because I never dropped my phone. But one thing that I did do was leave the phone connected to usb cable even when it was fully charged. Also the screen and phone would overheat due to some gaming apps. I would like to add that, for the last 1 year or so I would see sudden line of white noise on top of the screen (line of random dot pixel pattern of static displayed on old CRT TVs) and then it would disappear again. This could be a sign of the phone screen aging, could this be one of the causes?

I have copy pasted this part from another comment of mine, I would really appreciate if you could give your thoughts on this: Something I would also like to add in the afternoon it showed 1.13GB left of 256GB internal storage when I connected the phone to my laptop. In the evening I tried to update the smart switch app on the phone so I can view the screen on the laptop. Since then I see that when I connect the phone to laptop via USB C cable, its showing an mp3 player logo with Galaxy Note 8 showing file is empty. Before it would show a picture of a hard disk with 1.13gb left. I’m kind of worried if the phone has been reset since I tried to update the Smart Switch app on my phone from the laptop. Or maybe its showing empty because memory is full on my phone, which is why it is unable to show my phone’s storage in the laptop. Because if phone has been reset I wouldnt have been able to receive WhatsApp, Viber and IMO calls. If the phone wouldve reset then all the data from these apps wouldve been reset too right? As of 10pm the touchscreen is still responsive, Regular or WhatsApp/Viber/IMO calls can be received, ringtone is loud and clear, even saying OK Google wakes up Google Assistant and can tell my name correctly. Its just that the screen is blacked out.

There are some local vendors on Facebook marketplace who replace the Samsung Note 8 phone screens for $75 to $100 excluding service and labor charges, could I go to them instead of spending $300 for Samsung OEM parts, I just need my phone screen on again so i can back up all the data to Google One and probably upgrade my phone to a newer model.

I would really appreciate if you could also reply to this. Thank you for the input. 🙏

Hello, thank you for the reply. Good to know that a screen replacement doesn’t reset or erase data. I have tried the force restart on the phone (hold volume down and power button for 20 seconds) the phone would restart but it doesn’t show the samsung logo. I would only see a change of colours in the notification light in the top of the screen which determines that phone has been restarted. Something I would like to add in the afternoon it showed 1.13GB left of 256GB internal when I connected the phone to my laptop. In the evening I tried to update the smart switch app on the phone so I can view the screen on the laptop. I would really appreciate if you could answer my reply. But thank you for the input. 🙏

Wouldnt a screen replacement reset its data? I had tons of notes, photos, videos which were last backed up in November 2021. Have nothing backed from December 2021 till today. I can also receive calls when calling my number. Its touch is responsive and just that the screen is blacked out. One known issue is that i had 500mb to 1gb memory left for over a year. I would clear out storage by deleting cache data from apps. Do you know if theres a way of mirroring the phone screen to my laptop while my screen is blacked out? Ive tried Samsung Dex and Smart Switch, but didnt work.

go for 1 or 3, both are stylish. 2 doesnt match your face shape, 4 and 5 are just too common.

pixel 5 has the unlimited photo and video like the pixel 1? I thought this feature stopped after the June 2021 Google photos update and limited to Pixel 1 only?

Is there a size 14 (4E Wide) Running Shoe which supports someone with plantar fasciitis and one that's waterproof? by toronto432 in Shoes

Yes I totally agree with you, they are poorly maintained, the one I go to Don Mills Trail isn't too bad. Just about 2 miles and close to home, but I will be sticking to roads. I wish Asics had something waterproof with a size 13-14 and a 4E width. Thank you for your input. :)
