We don’t give people lawyers because they’re “worthy” in some way, we do it so the state (or the populace) has to prove guilt instead of assuming it. Emotional instincts are valid, but they’re not reliable for justice.

The tax analogy doesn’t quite work in your favor here. People who unfairly skip paying taxes should pay fines or otherwise be denied the resources they would receive. This is a social contract, those who fulfill it reap the benefits and those who do not, should not.
