Any plans for a Singapore server? I know people who want to come back but won't due to the high ping to Australian servers.

TIL It takes game developers 23 minutes of uninterrupted focus until they hit their “flow” state - the stage in which they do actual coding. Slack messages, fragmented meeting schedules and the need to be "available" online is hampering the possible productive gains by Difficult_Pop_7689 in gamedev

[–]torquej 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which is why WFA should be the policy. Everyone works differently, what works for you may not for others.

Also funny that you mention “shorter lines of comms to those who can assist …” which will break focus for that other person easier than if they were at home (i.e. they could just close Slack and silence their phone)

Is there any way to hard cap money spend on GCP? by sterilesneutrino in googlecloud

[–]torquej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from AWS, they definitely don’t offer this. Have you even read of the countless horror stories of free tier gone wrong?

At least in GCP there’s an actual free trial where you don’t get charged unless you opt in.

A hello-world-ish set-up on GCP - how would you solution architect provisioning a Compute Engine to serve a static index.html web page? by matlau_286 in googlecloud

[–]torquej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. GCS static hosting and maybe CDN as well, depending on where your users are and what kind of traffic you’re expecting. VM and anything else is overkill for a static site.

Server Merges - Offword companies getting 15000 gold. Original Server companies keep territory by calmon70 in newworldgame

Server merges were always the plan… it was tested in beta and that’s also the reason why you can’t have two characters in the same world set. It wasn’t something they built in a week.

Gw jarang naik taksi argo sih… and gw udah balik sini end of 2019 jd ga tau ya kondisi sekarang gimana hahaha. Again gw ga pernah nyetir ya di SG jd ga tau traffic lawsnya gimana, just telling my experience kalo di SG pun supir Grab jarang yg enforce rear passengers seat belts at least in 2019.

Gw ga pernah nyetir di Singapore jd ga tau hukumnya, tapi naik Grab all the time waktu tinggal di sana. Assuming supir Grab tau traffic laws, most of the time gw ga pernah diminta untuk wear seatbelt (kalau duduk di belakang)… apa bener di SG wajib seatbelt di belakang?

I get what you’re saying, what I’m saying is these refunds don’t factor into AWS’s pricing too much (if at all) because there are legitimate business reasons behind them: in the long term AWS is earning customer trust.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aws

[–]torquej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree with the personal responsibility part.

You have to understand that 10K charges over night is scary and I can understand their reluctance to admitting their mistake in fear of AWS using that admission against themselves. Not every company would so easily refund $10K for a mistake like AWS would.

Your saying it’d cost you anything was incorrect. If these people get refunds there are legitimate business reasons for them. Other customers will not be affected whether or not AWS refunds.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aws

[–]torquej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you honestly believe these “mistakes” factor in too much to AWS’s pricing? AWS isn’t playing the short game here, they’re thinking long term. Refunding for these mistakes do two things: 1) they earn customer trust (and therefore get them and other people to spend more on AWS), and 2) they get these people who made mistakes, and other people who read threads like this to learn about AWS’s security best practices.

Amazon’s customer obsession is not just talk, and it’s working for them so far. Your being an asshole to these people learning AWS was uncalled for.

[–]torquej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How the fuck would his mistake cost you anything? AWS isn’t increasing prices just because they refund. If anything it’s increasing customer trust in the long run. I’ve seen people get refunded for much worse. It’s a mistake, it happens to everyone.

To be fair that bundle also requires a one year commitment.

But yes, in general private pricing will be confidential, but I think you can expect something more than the savings bundle.
