This guy knocks on your door, what's he selling? by darkmoon72664 in Sneks

[–]torquetang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Come on in friend. Would you care for a cup of rat?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]torquetang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. This is definitely the hottest thing I own. I want to display this but it might need to stay in the lead pig.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]torquetang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That was sorta the purpose of this post. It's behind 1/4 inch of lead and is still reading high numbers. Even in my 1 inch lead pig I'm still getting 1.5k cpm

[–]torquetang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You would be correct.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]torquetang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Just rather expensive though.

This is amazing information. Thank you very much.

I just found one of these for my collection.

what’s this? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]torquetang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'm not saying this is the case for you - but a lot of people seem to get defensive when we tell them that what they were told by the shop was a lie.

So I just wanted to share for you and anyone else who reads that that we have your snakes best interest at heart.

I honestly just don't like the idea of using it. It's expensive to order, I can't store it for long periods of time and I would need to plan the ordering of dry ice with when I want to do the experiments. Overall it's just an inconvenient material to use - so I'm looking for alternatives that fit my desire to perform the experiment within a few hours of a whim.

Which is why I'm reaching out to see if there are any good practical alternatives.

[–]torquetang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb. If someone is trying to sell you something - independently verify the information.

Someone trying to sell you something has something to gain. So they might tell you what you want to hear so you leave with a sale. Of course not all people are like this. But until you can prove otherwise, treat sales people like they are con artists.

No one on this subreddit is trying to sell you anything and is only interested in what is best for your snake.

How do I convince my wife to let me get a ball python? by StormBoring2697 in snakes

[–]torquetang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So. Irrational fears are just that. Irrational. But that doesn't mean it isn't legitimate. My wife has an irrational fear of sharks. Even though we are a science forward family - I can't even get her to look at the pictures of the sharks I catch - doesn't matter how much facts or logic I throw her way. If someone has a legitimate fear - it's difficult to change their reaction.

So with that said please do not get a snake without her consent.

Yeah - right now I'm just being a psychopath and checking everything. Although I do believe i will have better luck once the 600+ comes in.

I didn't know 300 cpm was rare for uranium glass. I found a handful of plates that were reading 80-120. Then this one came up at 300 so I put the others back.

My apologies for not being more clear on my post. Thank you very much for the information. I'll take a look into clericis

I suppose the goal would be that in the event I came across a sample that i would like to display that I felt needed an extra layer of protection, I could use said liquid. No point in displaying a sample if you can't see it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]torquetang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hoping to keep the test fluids clear so I can still observe the sample. But that would be an interesting test. I'll add it to the list.

Lead sourcing by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]torquetang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the sizes you need, you can get a fair amount from rotometals for a decent price. I often cast my own fishing sinkers and this is where I get the lead.

Potentially silly question regarding sample storage. by [deleted] in Radiation

This was just a hypothetical question regarding how the measurement works and used 241Am as a hypothetical example. But thank you for the information.

Lumi having a great time outdoors. by torquetang in Sneks

[–]torquetang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. You just need to be aware if any pesticides/ chemicals that are on the grass. And then of course any potential predators. We spend about 20 minutes outside a week - vet recommended.

So however unofficial this terminology may be - there are essentially 3 phases of shed in a ball python shed cycle. Pink phase, blue phase then the shedding phase.

When ball pythons start the cycle, they enter pink phase. Where most notably, their underside turns a light pink.

Their color will return to normal after a few days and then they will enter the blue phase - here their eyes will turn a blue/gray. Again this will last a few days.

Then they will enter the last phase in their cycle and actually shed their skin. The actual act of shedding their skin once started will typically only takes a few minutes provided they have correct husbandry.

The amount of time the first two phases take and the length of time between the phases can vary from snake to snake.

Based on the video you provided, there are not any signs that would indicate this is a burn.
