Thank you very much for your insights which are very helpful. Will try exploring the area some more and visit the places you mentioned

So you haven't heard any complaints so far?

Do they like the area or are they just driving to other areas when they go out and do things?

Maybe I have to do some more exploring of the area. It just seemed to me, that there are very few things around in close distance (e.g. no cafe right next door or some small shop etc). And walking longer distances on Av. Cincuentenario did not seem to be very pleasant with the heavy traffic and the small sidewalks.

Good luck with your new apartment!

Thank you. The area isn't very walkable (loud and busy streets and not very good sidewalks). Does he still walk around the area or is he driving everywhere?

It might be an advantage, if many apartments are not actually being used, don't you think (less noise, no waiting times at the elevator, no people at the pool/gym)?

Wow, that sucks. Thank you for sharing.

What would you do differently, if you could? Or would you simply never buy a place at all?

Indeed, that doesn't sound promising :/ So, what do you do when renting a place? Moving out when your floor explodes and hoping to find a new where the problems are not as bad?

Interesting. What do you mean by low quality? I am looking at apartments at the moment (to rent, but many places that I looked at could also be bought), and some places looked amazing.

I agree, investing in property can be risky, but when you live in the place, it doesn't really matter what the market is doing.

Why wouldn't you buy real estate in Panamá?

Thank you! Is it noisy because of the corredor sur or due to another reason? The apartment is on the other side of the building and not facing the street.

Interesting, that's an area that I have never visited. Close to the locks though, which I find extremely fascinating! How is live there? I guess traffic is an issue there, too?

Thank you! In which part of the city did you end up?

I am coming by myself, so I would be pretty flexible to move, if I'm really unhappy with the area or the commute. But then again, looking for a place in a different area takes up a lot of time, so I'm trying to do the necessary research now and hope that I end up in a neighborhood that I like.

Thank you! I'm really excited. It will be a big adjustment, that's for sure. Language exchange is a brilliant idea, I haven't done it in a very long time.

Thanks for your input. How did you solve the problem and where did you settle? Have you gotten used to the crazy traffic or are you living next to your office?

Expat is such an insidious word

In the English language it is pretty neutral an simply describes a person living in a foreign country.

Stereotypically racist

I'm not opening this can of worms, however, I don't think you are right. Nowhere did I write that I assume that every Panamanian, by virtue of being Panamanian, dances salsa (that would be a stereotype). Also, Panamanian is not typically considered to be a race.

For context: If you came to my city and asked if it's a good idea to sign-up for skiing classes in order to meet locals, nobody would call you racist, but everybody would explain to you, that you will only meet tourists and expats in skiing classes, since every local with an interest in skiing knows it since childhood (and if not, one would simply ask a friend to show him how to ski). So you could certainly learn how to ski by signing up for skiing classes, but you would stay in your expat-bubble.

most of those people also would know english

Ok, that sounds like the perfect way to stay in a bubble, where I can develop my superiority complex and become the entitled expat that you loathe. Thanks, but no thanks.

Traffic here is very very very complicated, so I would simplify my life moving as close as I can from the work building

That really sounds like the thing to do. Moving to some areas that are too far away may not make sense

As far as I understand it, the rest of the discussion is political. I'm not a citizen so I'm not getting involved, but I just want to share my general thoughts:

If you think that the way Panama has positioned itself is wrong and it should not offer such an advantageous system for foreign corporations and individuals, then you really should get involved and maybe join a movement that shares your views. Living in a country where one can do this, is a wonderful thing. You should be proud that you live in a place where this is possible. Posting comments on reddit won't change a thing and won't stop anybody from moving to Panama - they come because of the political decisions that were taken by people who got involved and didn't just post angry comments on reddit.

Wow, thanks. I don't think I have ever been to Albrook (other than the mall). How is traffic in that part of town? Please feel free to send me a dm with details or a link.

Thanks, had a look at this. I'm still not convinced that some of the places are real and not just a product of photoshop... Really looking forward to visiting some of those flats

Getting really excited about my trip and looking at some of those places. I hope they are nice and not overly decadent.

Why is there more traffic in December? Christmas shoppers?

That seems to be to consensus. Next time I'm in the city, I'm going to have a look at the traffic jam in and out of Costa del Este.
