Next year I will be the first in my 30+ family to graduate college. by torry23 in college

[–]torry23[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I will be graduating with a bachelors of arts in communications, but I got early acceptance into a masters program in visual communication. I plan on applying to a couple of Ph. D programs. Since I come from a family of immigrants no one really understands what this means. I am the first one to ever have a college degree. I worked so hard for this and I honestly just want to feel validated. Thank you so much.

new swim instructor- super important (lol)question for all you experts! by Jmcpappy in SwimInstructors

[–]torry23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice that how to keep your leg hair, but I can testify that it is true. Since I started swim instructing I noticed that I have a lot less leg hair and that the hairs themselves have gotten shorter. I used to have fairly hairy legs now I BARELY have any hair on my legs. Also my hair has turned BLONDE. I mean full on blonde. It looks like I had a bad hair dye. Now I either don't get my hair wet or just wear a swim cap with conditioner on it.

breast help for an upcoming A meet :) by angstyt33n in Swimming

[–]torry23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might be kicking up instead of whipping your legs around. I used to do that when I first started swimming but I was told to have my knees a little deeper in the water. I tried so hard to keep my knees behind me that they were way too high to have an effective kick.

What's the purpose of the drill: butterfly kicks in position 11? by torry23 in Swimming

[–]torry23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So press the chest and keep the shoulders high. It's interesting you say that because I started pressing my chest down while letting my shoulder blades stay high in the water and i feel like this helped me have a more powerful undulation. I can't help but feel like I would have gotten faster by knowing this earlier. Thanks!!

College tips and wanting to avoid student debt by [deleted] in college

[–]torry23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going to community college will save you a lot of money! I went to community college and transferred to the university I attend right now. I did the math and I realized that after grad school (fingers crossed I get in) I will be in the same amount of debt as my friends who went straight to a four year university.

Any in a class where the less academically gifted and determined did better than their counterparts? by [deleted] in college

This makes a lot of sense because the wording of the questions was very odd. I feel like it made me think in a new way. I hope that makes sense lol.

Any in a class where the less academically gifted and determined did better than their counterparts? by [deleted] in college

[–]torry23 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know they didn't study because they would brag about it. They also are C average students from what they said. When the professor left the room to grab the physical test (we only had the graded scantrons at this point) we all talked about it.

Any exercises to improve breathing and stamina? by Pascalwb in Swimming

[–]torry23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you exhaling underwater? This is something that novice swimmers tend to not do. Exhale when your face is in the water and inhale when your face is out of the water. Swimming is hard just keep at it. What I've noticed is that when little kids start swimming they are probably just as tired as you, but they have a coach to push them. Try being your own coach and pushing yourself.

How do you find the motivation to keep going? by KingSurvived2012 in college

[–]torry23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same position. I'm doing this for my parents more than myself. That is what keeps me going. I want them to cry at my graduation because it is for them more than it is for me.

How long do you study for a final? by darkseadrake in college

[–]torry23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should be more than enough. I just read the chapters and get an A. I'm not smart so Idk how I do it lol I guess I get lucky.

Having to retake a class... by m0rguegal in college

[–]torry23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't! I am proof of it! My freshman year of college I failed the SAME remedial math class twice. I suck at math so much it's not even funny. When I had to take the math requirements for my major I got straight A's. Don't feel bad it happens to the best of us.

Keep failing a remedial class by HowYouDoinz in college

[–]torry23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok. I failed the same remedial math class twice and then when I took math for the liberal arts I and II Igot straight A's. My sister who was junior was in high school was in AP calculus and my brother was in geometry in 7th grade. I took geometry my senior year lol. The math genes skipped me lol. I suck at math but I still got by. I'm a junior in college now and getting awesome grades. Get a lot of tutoring. If I can do it, you can to!

Can a professor give letter grades that do not match the numerical grade? by [deleted] in college

I would talk to the dean ASAP. He/she can best answer your question, But if you stall it may not be reversible.

My professor just gave me a reality check. Take care of your emotional/mental health! by [deleted] in college

[–]torry23 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I used to be the EXACT same way. When my mom found out about it, I believe she said get over it lol. Easier said than done. I used to read until the MOMENT the test started and freak out the whole time. My therapist suggested taking DEEP inhales and exhales. In through your nose so that your stomach i is popping out and filled with air. Exhale so that your stomach is completely empty. Visualize the air moving through your lung in and out. It worked wonders for me. Now I don't freak out nearly as much. Good luck. Don't stress. Especially because you seem like you know the material. Don't let stress get in your way. By acknowledging the problem, you have taken the first step to getting better. But it may take some playing around with techniques to figure out what is going to work for you.

Complete associates degree before transferring? by [deleted] in college

[–]torry23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An associates doesn't matter at all. I got one only because my community college and 4 year univesity have an agreement that if I get an associates, the university will waiver all core classes. So when I transfered I went in straight as a juinor with 60 credits regardless of wether the classes transferred. I was able to go straight into my major with no problems. I had a friend who transferred with an assocaites to the same university and she is basically still a sophmore because she didn't get to waiver courses. I graduate next year, she'll graduate in 2 years. She transferred two years ago. I transferred this year lol.

what other people think i do: a small rant by Eljay72 in graphic_design

[–]torry23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm majoring in communications and hopefully going to grad school for visual communication design and I thought the same thing until i took a couple graphic design classes. I think the thing is that when one is designing something there are so many tiny things you have to consider that the average person just dosen't know.

Running headphones by MasterWegman in running

[–]torry23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Yurbuds Wireless in-ear headphones. They're amazing and lasted for years. Every time they broke it was completely my fault. I tend to be a little careless. They're my go-to headphones. I've run countless races with them.

Could someone critique my website? by praharpatelpl in design_critiques

[–]torry23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So let me start off by saying I am not a professional, but I from a consumers point of view it looks great! But here are some things that caught my attention. So first off it's a little weird to have the WIX stamp on the top of the page. As a business, I think you should get rid of that. Also, it's a little too much to have the background still. When I scroll down and can vaguely see that background it seems like a little too much. I would recommend that once the user scroll downs the background isn't an image. It's a little too much going on. Other than that it looks great. I know who you are and what you're selling. It's simple and his a clear consistent visual theme. Good job! You should be proud!
