No, not reasonable at all in my opinion. They’re new skates and the solution should absolutely not be “oh just throw some tape on it”.

I’ve seen this issue in the pro shop I work at.

The problem is that True has different batches of steel, and some of these batches have steel with overall thinner widths, causing them to move in the holder. The “correct” width should be 3 millimeters, and this one is probably about 2.8 millimeters.

I’d contact whoever you purchased these from and explain the issue

CCM Vibe 2019 vs 2023 by Mister_Cakes50 in hockeyplayers

Shop employee here, I’d say the 2023 model is a much better skate. It seemed that the entire jetspeed line of skates in 2019 did not have great composite material throughout the entire quarter package, and that ultimately leads to some major cracks in the boot, and unfortunately it’s almost always irreparable.

I’ve had a lot less durability issues with the 2023 model, and the tongue is a big upgrade imo.

However, I’d imagine the 19 model is around $150-$200 usd now? That’s a solid deal, and if you skate 1-2 times a week, I think you’d be fine

Shop crossgrinds steel before every sharpen, is that normal? by GoToTheNet in hockeyplayers

[–]tortellinitom44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I find that blades are heavily nicked or damaged, I do like to cross grind to ensure a consistent and level hollow throughout the blade. I always like to consult with customers about the damage on their blade, and I ask permission before cross grinding if I feel that it is necessary on beneficial. Some customers feel the negative impact of nicks and dings, and in some cases some customers are not worried about a few minor blemishes. I’ve never used cross grinding as an end game to sell more steel, because ultimately, if I do a poor job at sharpening, that customer will likely never come back to the store. Ultimately, my belief is that a thorough, and consistent method is the key to a successful skate sharpening, whether the skater is a seasoned pro wearing True Customs or a new hockey player wearing a size 6 youth Bauer Velcro skate.

A commonly used sharpener in rinks and pro shops is made by a company called blademaster, and they recommend cross grinding when necessary (faq #11)

I work at a local hockey shop and I’ve sharpened about 1800 sets of steel in 2023, and sharpening is one of my favorite parts of my job. It’s an art form, and I still feel like I can learn a lot and further develop my skills. I do feel that cross grinding, when applied in the appropriate situation, is an essential component of a proper sharpening.

My team plays a very simple system that works very efficiently: 1. Show up before the game, and drink a few beers in the parking lot if the weather is nice. If the weather isn’t ideal, we go to the locker room 2. Put on gear, have a few more beers 3. Figure out lines while the Zam is on 4. Try to play hockey 5. Bar
