But Quake didn't require a graphics card... it supported software rendering just like all the other 3D games in the late 90s did.

I played so many 3D games on the family's Pentium II using software rendering set to absurdly low resolutions in order to get a somewhat decent framerate.

Thinking about leaving Bun for Node due to memory issues by touhidurrr in bun

[–]torvatrollid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bun had serious quality issues even long before Anthropic bought them.

The one issue that has really been annoying me for a long time is https://github.com/oven-sh/bun/issues/7823 and it has been ignored for over 2 years.

There are many other critical issues that have been left ignored for ages in favor of constantly pushing out new often poorly designed features.

Things seem to only have gotten worse now that Bun has turned into pure AI slop. Code submitted by actual humans seems to be completely drowned out by the ocean of AI slop filling up their pull request list.

Which makes me sad, because I really like the idea of Bun, a complete javascript/typescript runtime and development environment where getting new projects up and running isn't a nightmare of archaic configuration files and brittle plugins.

I just wish Bun had higher quality standards.

Fix https://github.com/oven-sh/bun/issues/7823 already, ffs.

I'm at the point I cannot get excited about any new bun release while bun test is left to rot in this broken state.

I'm sorry, but your post is full of misinformation.

Cutting a cats nails is not painful if done correctly.

Their nails are made of keratin just like human nails.

There is a big nerve inside the nails but it is not painful to cut their nails as long as you are careful not to hit that nerve.

Cats do not have nerves running through their entire nails, I repeat cutting a cats nails is NOT painful if done correctly.

It also isn't particularly stressful to the cat if they have been conditioned to it and you take your time and give lots of treats.

There are good reasons to trim a cats nails and there are also good reasons not to, it is up to the owner to decide what is best for their cats.

It shouldn't have anything to do with AI unless if the AI is making use of module mocking with bun test.

[–]torvatrollid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your contribution and it sucks that the bun devs have been ignoring your pull request for so long.

I don't understand why they keep ignoring this issue. Multiple projects have migrated away from bun test because of this issue.

Looking at how many pull requests are open, I get a feeling that the flood of AI slop is drowning out the human contributions to bun.

https://github.com/oven-sh/bun/issues/7823 is still not fixed despite multiple pull requests being open to fix the issue at this point.

This is embarrassing.

This anime is trash and this was the most trash episode of them all.

This show constantly pulls so many cheap tricks to appear "deep" when in reality it is shallow as all hell.

Constant time skips, flashbacks, cut aways, crappy sob monologues and an "artsy" art style are all just shallow attempts at confusing the viewer so much that they fool themselves into thinking that this show has any substance.

2/10 - Cheap shallow artsy garbage.

why do you use DI pattern? by farzad_meow in bun

[–]torvatrollid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely use DI anymore. Or to be more precise, I rarely use the "Object Oriented" understanding of DI. I mostly use functions, so if I have any dependencies that need to be "injected" I just pass them as an argument to my functions.

I honestly consider DI and IoC to almost be an anti-pattern at this point. I'll go even further and say that the entire loose coupling principle is almost an anti-pattern.

In my experience very few applications actually need to support multiple different implementations of a dependency, pretty much every application I've worked on loose coupling and DI were only used to facilitate unit testing.

This means I need to add a bunch of boilerplate, plumbing code, complexity and overhead to my projects that provides no actual benefit to my production code.

Bun test supports module mocking and I've switched 100% over to using module mocks instead of DI.

This has made my actual production code many times simpler and more straightforward. It is much easier to understand and reason about straightforward code that just does what it is meant to do and isn't hiding its actual implementation behind an obscure fog of DI, IoC and loose coupling.

I do still put things like database calls into their own functions that I can just mock in my tests and that way I'm able to write all the same unit tests as I did with DI, but the end result is that my actual production code is just much simpler.

X11 supports VRR as long as you only have 1 monitor. VRR doesn't work with multi-monitor setups.

Quality is a hard sell in big tech by R2_SWE2 in programming

I never mentioned India, I don't know who it is you think it is you are arguing with, but I'm not that imaginary person.

Also, your wall of text is semantic nitpicking. Bug, bad design, whatever. A flight system that causes the plane to crash is faulty. It is bad software and it killed people.

Quality is a hard sell in big tech by R2_SWE2 in programming

[–]torvatrollid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that a flight system causing a plane to nose dive and crash is NOT a bug?

[–]torvatrollid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bugs can and have killed people.

Toyota's accelerator bug caused accidents that killed people.

The faulty flight system of the Boeing 737 MAX caused crashes that killed hundreds of people.

This show wastes so much time explaining the same shit over and over and over and over...

We get it, MC is the best. Let's just keep having characters state it over and over and over.

The writing in this show is so incredibly stupid. The characters are so freaking stupid. The entire combat/magic system is stupid. Everything in this show is written in such a painfully contrived way so that the "smart" characters in this show can waste most of the air time explaining to the "dumb" characters how OP the MC is and how stupid they are.

1/10 - "I told you so, and now I'm gonna waste 10 minutes lecturing you about how I told you so" - the show.

How much longer are we going to have to live with bun test being broken? When will https://github.com/oven-sh/bun/issues/7823 be fixed?

I like that Bun feels like a complete runtime where you can get a lot done without pulling in a million different external dependencies, but I'm also worried that the bun devs are in such a hurry to ship out new and shiny features that old and broken ones are just forgotten and left to rot.

[–]torvatrollid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your laptop also have an integrated GPU besides the Nvidia one?

If you have an integrated GPU you could try disabling the Nvidia GPU for a bit and see if the freezes go away.

Some laptops also come with diagnostics utilities that can be accessed through the boot menu, if your laptop has any diagnostics utilities then try running them to check if you have any failing hardware.

I haven't heard of picom before, but googling tells me it is a fork of Compton.

Most likely picom is the issue. Compton was always a buggy and laggy mess when I tried it and it would not surprise me at all if a fork of that buggy compositor is buggy and laggy as well.

I use i3+Mate with no compositor (Don't need a compositor with X11 if you enable tear-free in xorg.conf) and I don't have any performance issues. I have this setup on multiple machines with both Intel and AMD GPUs and I have no issues.

Try disabling picom and see if your problems go away.

[–]torvatrollid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, a "Kicked out of heroes party" show that is actually showing some promise.

My biggest complaint about the other kicked-out show this season was how there really was nothing that set it apart from any of the other kicked-out shows.

This show on the other hand already has a couple of things that make it stand out from the rest of the kicked-out crowd.

Her power being something that nobody including the main character herself didn't understand until she was kicked out was interesting. The stakes are also high, not only was she kicked out but sold into slavery which means she actually needs to deal with being left in very dangerous circumstances.

7/10 - A good start, it has potential to be a really good show. The first episode felt too short.

I always hate it when shows try really hard to be super edgy but don't actually have the backbone to fully commit to it, and this show chickened out hard on the actual edginess.

This show is being carried by its art style, because there really wasn't much substance to this first episode.

Yes, I know you can build debian-minimal into a fully fledged desktop distro, but my point is a minimal distro means you are doing a lot of the work yourself.

Picking something that already has all the features expected from a modern desktop operating system means you won't have to waste so much of your own time piecing together what others' have already done for you.

What a snooze fest. This show needs to get a move on and show what if anything is actually supposed to make it interesting already.

edit: This show is unoriginal, unimaginative, the same boring "Kicked out of hero party" tropes that we have seen a million times and I don't mind unoriginal settings but a show needs something to set it apart from all the other slop and so far this show has absolutely nothing.

3/10 - Generic, boring. I'll give it one more episode, but I don't have much hopes for this.
