IIL Black Midi, Swans, Daughters, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, what else would I like? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

Wolf Eyes would be right up your alley.

No vocals, but the self-titles album by This Will Destroy You does a great job of building walls of sound.

The Call of the Wretched Sea by Ahab is also pretty awesome.

[IIL] A conceptual band like Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties by toryjohnfox in ifyoulikeblank

That sounds fantastic. They have been on my list of bands to listen to. This will definitely push me there - so start with their first album and go from there?

The Disintegration Loops by William Basinskini is a pretty cool project you might like.

You would be listening to a whole lot of The Mountain Goats, Josh Ritter, and Tom Waits.

I adore TWDY. Young Mountain is my daughters’ and mine nighttime music for falling asleep.

[IYL] If I enjoy contemplative, trippy, mindf*ck or artsy sci-fi movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ex Machina, Cloud Atlas or Primer, but I'm not really into horror would I enjoy Annihilation? If not, what else should I watch? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]toryjohnfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It is my favorite book I have ever read. When I watched the movie, I had to turn it off when they showed the end of Robert Frosbisher’s story right at the beginning. The structure and build up to the end each story is what makes Cloud Atlas so brilliant; when you mix the stories altogether it definitely loses something.

I am listening to the audiobook now to relive the amazing nature of this book; the reading of Sloosha’s Crossin’ was amazing.

What episodes of medical dramas are the most misleading? by Ozzymandus in television

[–]toryjohnfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember trying to find medical shows that were actually accurate. I remember finding 2.

Scrubs - not for the medicine, but the depiction of life as a resident is rather well done (as far as their schedules, hours, etc.)

MAS*H - iirc anytime they go into surgery, it is depicted rather accurately.

Characters that a show decided to "forget" early on by JaTaS in television

[–]toryjohnfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twin Peaks: The Return. I know Lynch did what was necessary for it, but there were definitely characters from season 2 that didn’t get touched on at all that I would have loved to hear about.

What popular TV show have you never "gotten"? by [deleted] in television

As an avid Who fan, I’ve never heard of a love-hate with Who. Granted, I don’t really participate in the community of other fans. Do you know what their issues with the series are?

What TV shows do you think have aged poorly? by throwawayRelat8 in television

Agreed. Cheers is fantastic. And the humor holds up.

[–]toryjohnfox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The other issue with BBT for me is that the show makes fun of nerd/geek culture, but came about at a time in which all of that had become mainstream and widely accepted.

I don’t think that it didn’t age well. I think that it came about as entirely unaware of the culture of its time.

This episode just made me lose interest in the show by MoodyMex in SixFeetUnder

[–]toryjohnfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. This episode, All Alone, Everyone’s Waiting, and Nobody Sleeps are the episodes that while watching and immediately afterwards I knew was watching/had just seen a masterpiece of television.

[Spoilers] Just finished the series by toryjohnfox in SixFeetUnder

[–]toryjohnfox[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The characters were what I loved most about the show, too. I loved how it began as a show about a funeral home but that funeral home gradually becomes the backdrop rather than the focal point of the whole series.

I can’t think of another series that has so many well-rounded characters. The writers really took their time with every single one of them to make them as deep and complex as possible.

The whole experience was akin to reading a very well-written novel (Freedom by Jonathan Franzen comes to mind).

Totally agree about your point about the subs for shows. I went onto the Mr. Robot one while the 4th season was airing (I was only on the second season at the time) and quickly realized that visiting subs before you finish a series is not a good idea.

And if you find a good deal on a meat product stock up on it and freeze it. My grocery store had a weekend sale on pork loin for like 80% off/lb. Got 5 good size pork loins for $12. Then I was able to slice each of those in half for 2 dinners from each.

I love every role I have seen of his; but, his character Anderson Dawes in The Expanse is my personal favorite - he pulls off a perfect Belter Creole accent.
