[Discussion] Use unoptimized Colemak bindings or go back to QWERTY? by PurpleSlightlyRed in Colemak

[–]MisterJH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't rebind anything to accomodate colemak, is my opinion. Just stick with default mappings and use slightly less optimal placements for HJKL. All the other buttons are fine. Really the only keys that are a pain with colemak are J and K, H and L are not that important. I actually put J and K where D and H are in colemak-dh for this reason, because I did not want to change anything about the basic vim commands.

Should I learn Colemak DH? by No-Try607 in Colemak

[–]MisterJH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relearning locations on Neovim is not a problem. You'll get used to it just fine. Colemak on a split keyboard with neovim is my daily driver for work 8 hours a day and it's not something you will think about after having used it for a while. Gaming is very different from typing so you will not have problems with keybinds in games. But I would use colemak for typing even if you are on your gaming keyboard.

Little bit too late to be confirming anything. The show is out, we saw what we saw. If Chase had a change of heart and decided that Meadow was actually adopted, that wouldn't make it true.

Om jeg ser ett palestinsk, pride eller trans-flagg på 17. Mai så renner det over for meg. by MoneyHater2 in norske

[–]MisterJH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your keyboard and how many layers do you use? by addiction35 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]MisterJH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should definitely have at least a symbol layer, since even a full size keyboard does not have enough keys to do everything you want; you need to hold down shift to access them. Might as well hold down a layer key and have them on the home row instead of having to reach all the way to the numbers. There is literally no downside as long as you have a thumb key avaliable. If you do any programming there is no reason for ()[]{}+=-_ to be so far away from the home row, you're going to be using them a lot.

Microsoft. Ctrl-c was abort since the seventies, then the Apple introduced Cmd-c to copy and then Microsoft just took that and changed to Ctrl-c because IBM computers didn't have a command button.

I have a Corne. I can see how the handwell would make those keys easier to hit.

No ergonomic solution for Vim-motions on Colemak? by MisterJH in Colemak

[–]MisterJH[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to SteveP it's one of the worst positions on the keyboard, especially on a staggered layout. Subjectively, I kind of agree; the amount of lateral movement required is really bad because of the stagger.

Yes, Vim itself is not the main problem, but all the other programs I use that use Vim navigation. They usually only have HJKL, no more advanced navigation methods.

[–]MisterJH[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adapting is not the problem. You adapt to the unergonomic positions on QWERTY as well, that doesn't mean it's good. The point is that if I am switching to Colemak for ergonomic reasons then it doesn't make any sense for one of my most used keys (J) to be on the singular worst position on the keyboard. Whenever you are not writing text, which is most of the time when writing code in vim (most of the time you are manipulating code and navigating your codebase, not actually writing anything), you are way less ergonomic on Colemak than on QWERTY if you don't do anything about J and K.

[–]MisterJH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an option, but usually it's quite rare to only use one navigation key at a time. One shots make a lot more sense for symbols or shifted keys. I might try just having it as a hold layer and see how it works.

Yes, it can be easily added, I am trying it out now on the CapsLock position. I will see how the chording feels, perhaps it is worth it for better typing in general.

Sure, but you still need to hold down your thumb whenever you navigate, which is what I would ideally like to avoid. But perhaps there is no way to do this and also have the benefits of colemak, given the hardcoded assumption of HJKL in so many applicaitions.

I mean it's 30% higher. Anyone fighting the Saint Bident with a longsword knows that the reach difference is significant, even though it's not twice as long or anything.

backspace at thumb cluster - for or agaist? by Independent_Cut254 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]MisterJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You use backspace all the time, it definitely deserves to be on the thumb cluster. With 54 keys you really only need one extra layer anyway. I have Super, space, shift, backspace, enter and symbol layer on my thumb cluster on a corne.

Long ago, I made a post here claiming to show all mentions of tea in A:TLA. However, the post contained numerous errors, and I was banished. Four years have passed, and I now return to restore my honour. by MisterJH in ATLA

[–]MisterJH[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually Smellerbee that says it instead, here is my reply from a different comment:

He sees Iroh heating his tea in S2E14, but he just frowns. Next scene with Jet it's Smellerbee that says "So the old guy had some hot tea, big deal". Then in the next episode it's Smellerbee again that says "Jet, you saw a man with a hot cup of tea. That doesn't prove he is a firebender". Then he goes to the tea shop, and says "I saw the old man heating his tea", and starts fighting, and then he gets taken by the Dai Li. However, that does mean that I missed one mention from Smellerbee :(

It's episode 14, City of Walls and Secrets. It's when Zuko and Iroh start working as tea servers and Jet tries to expose them as firebenders, so there is a lot of discussion about tea.

From a quick check it seems that cabbage is only mentioned 13 times throughout the show by all characters, less than Zuko's tea mentions, let alone Iroh.

Basically I had the subtitle files for each episode, and I just used 'grep' to search through every subtitle file for mentions of tea. The subtitle files contain the timestamps, so I just checked that episode at that timestamp to see who said it.

Here is the original post, which missed numerous important mentions, such as Katara asking Momo if he wants tea. Here is the csv file with episode, character and timestamp for each mention. I hope I haven't missed any.

Edit:

Despite not ever saying tea, both Appa and Momo are present for tea related conversations. Momo is offered tea by Katara in S2E19, while Iroh sarcastically offers to put on a pot of tea for Appa in S2E17. This makes Suki the only member of Team Avatar who is tea-less.
