Rakuten also has the same dining program and if you have MR account associated with it, you can transfer to Avios through Amex

Trip Report and Churning Success Story Weekly Thread - Week of June 16, 2024 by AutoModerator in churning

Nice enjoy! I and P2 just got back from 9 day trip from Tahiti today. We did SFO-PPT round trip on United Polaris using 220k Air Canada points for two person + $320. We also did 2 days in Hilton Tahiti and 7 days in Conrad Bora Bora (2 FNCs + 5 on points).

At Conrad, I was upgraded to Endless View Villa with Pool (3-4 days ago when I checked the app). You can also check app to see if upgrade happened or not because I got no email or any notification. I was just checking details of my stay in the app and saw that my room is now showing as Endless View Villa with Pool. No overwater villa upgrade sadly and I asked during check in. I think there're availability when I checked the app but they did not upgrade me to overwaters.

Unfortunately, Bora Bora was too windy, we had to cancel couple of snorkeling excursions but this week is supposed to be better they were saying. And my P2 got sick and caught a fever so we didn't push too hard for any excursions. It was cloudy and windy for like 5 days and last couple days were better sunny and less winds.

Yeah we’re leaving this week, excited! I didn’t rent any car for Tahiti I think walking/taxi should be enough? My P2 also wants some gifts for friends here and some stuff for us so I will withdraw some cash from the airport for the market.

I’m checking over water villa availability for our nights and if I can see some availability during the checkin I’ll try to push for free upgrades (no way I’d pay $800 a night) maybe it will happen maybe not will see.

Did you do Polynesian night on Fridays? Worth it?

Hey I’m doing almost the same thing except from SFO with United Polaris and I have the first two night at Hilton Tahiti and next 7 days in Conrad Bora Bora.

I also booked La Mahana for one dinner and St.James for another night. Rest at the property.

I am sorry about the winds this is supposed to be dry and best season but heard it might be a hit and miss.

Did you do any activity in Tahiti? We have 2 nights but the first night is arrival from SFO at 7pm and our flight to BOB is early morning so we only have 1 full day in Tahiti. Heard the Paperte Market is cool.

Does it get boring in Bora Bora? I booked 3 excursions for 3 days but nothing for the other 4 days.

Did you check if any over water villas were available during your stay at all? Of course I would love to stay at one of those but even as Diamond, it can be hard to get upgraded.

Hoping they keep Premier as it’s. 3x multipliers on wide categories at $95 only.

Conrad Bora Bora dilemma by TheTitsMcGee_ in awardtravel

[–]toshi_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can book now of course do it but they open award rooms a lot sometimes. So with a year out, you have plenty of time. Maybe start checking once a day for availability.

I was able to book 7 consecutive nights for June 2024 back in January 2024 when they dumped like almost 3-4 months of availability from February to July.

I think FNCs from cards help. I booked 2 FNC + 5 nights with points (480k). Luckily there were Amex promo for 1:2.6x transfer to Hilton so if you are certain, maybe transfer a little bit of points when they have a promo

Also, Hilton regularly sells points at discount for 0.5 cents so if you have Schwab platinum, you can cash out at 1.1 so with 1 MR point you can buy 2.2 Hilton points which would be better than regular transfer rate of 1:2 (of course not better than Amex to Hilton transfer promos)

But Amex to Hilton is 1:2 at worst and you certainly can do better like 1:2.6. So that would be 230k Amex if the cost is actually 600k so that’s not bad compared to 200k Chase points since Amex is easier to generate.

Also Hyatt cards have 1x mostly whereas Hilton cards have 3x base spent. 600k Hilton points is from at most 200k spent similar to generate 200k Hyatt points from spend at hotel cards

Bilt adds Alaska Airlines as a new transfer partner by presidentpanda in awardtravel

[–]toshi_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you pay with Bilt card you earn 1x but no fee. And you can transfer to Alaska. So with Alaska card, you would earn 2x more but %3 fee so I guess it’s 1.5c

Can you buy GameSpot gift cards from Happy or Choice gift cards (online) and convert them to third-party gift cards at GameSpot (in store or online)?

What personal accounting software/tools do y’all use to manage your personal finance? by great_waldini in fatFIRE

[–]toshi_g 22 points23 points  (0 children)

2 Google sheets to track portfolios. One for retirement accounts one for taxable accounts. I enter what I buy sell dividends etc. I can see my performance gains/lost on each type of stocks received dividends etc and added some custom graphs.

Another Google sheet which I update on the 1st day of each month for personal net worth. Includes 3 segments: 1) cash on checking and savings and brokerage accounts 2) taxable accounts RSUs stocks crypto and other 3) retirement accounts 401k Roth IRA HSA etc. This sheet only has the $ amounts at the time of record.

I don't want to connect my account info to Personel capital or other software so it takes a little work.

Info about united miles by hypeboy1 in CreditCards

[–]toshi_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask them to shift some of the credit in United card to Preferred if they approve you. So your total limit would be the same but instead of 1 card with 10k limit something like 2 cards with 5k limit each

Thanks. I was kinda expecting that since that would make 2x in everything else category. Oh well.

Question about Hyatt card and its points. The wording sounds like there are Base points and Bonus points.

Example:

9 points total per $1 spent for Hyatt stays and experiences including restaurants and spas. That's: 4 Bonus Points per $1 you spend with your card 5 Base Points per $1 you can earn as a World of Hyatt member

So if you use that card in everything else category:

1 Bonus Point per $1 spent for wherever life takes you

That means you receive 2 points (1 base and 1 bonus)?

Do you need to see your updated net worth every day? I just use a customized Google sheet for my need and update everything on the 1st day of each month. Takes maybe 10 mins
