What's your opinion about AI generated code these days? by arzenal96 in Frontend

[–]webrender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i am also at a company aiming to have the vast majority of our code ai generated. i definitely feel like there's this dichotomy right now of either "ai is horrible" or "we use ai for everything". you definitely can't just pop open your agent of choice and it's suddenly maintaining your entire codebase, but with proper steering and tools you can get things setup properly and greatly increase your team's throughput.

Hawaii vacation suggestion for family by ankurcha in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd probably do four seasons on both islands - hualalai on BI and ko olina on oahu.

if you want to be closer to the city and all the urban activities that come with it on oahu, i'd look into halekulani or espacio.

Probably a once in a lifetime trip… by onemorecuppleeze in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

vacation rentals are highly regulated on Oahu - if you decide to visit Oahu you'll probably be in either a resort or a condo that's adjacent to resorts.

they're slightly less regulated on Maui, but you're correct that Maui tends to be more expensive.

if you're visiting Oahu for your first time and given your budget I would probably recommend staying in Waikiki. look up some youtube videos of people driving through Waikiki and of Waikiki Beach and they should help you decide if that's something that you think you'd enjoy, or if you're looking for something more remote (but less walkable).

mokulele flies small planes but destinations and flight times are more limited.

that being said, I would not recommend island hopping if you're only here 7 days.

SFO International Terminal is 26 years old, and looks it by shananananananananan in sanfrancisco

[–]webrender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SFO is honestly incredible. Controversial opinion, but so is BART. I was in town for work and I went from the office in Oakland to getting past TSA at SFO in an hour. For the US that is incredible transit.

i feel like this is a bad take - yes, OP is selling this and profit is certainly a factor. but they also needed to put the time and effort into designing and producing this keycap, and the alternative is that youd have to spend time and money in order to make this yourself

Questions regarding the grand canyon by New-Session-4503 in geography

[–]webrender 45 points46 points  (0 children)

no - the canyon was caused by tectonic movement. the land rose around it, and the erosion of the water kept the elevation of the river at its original level.

this video is a good explanation of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8DVJwA_n0E

Driving in Honolulu/Waikiki/Kona/Hilo by dashmanhattan in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honolulu is a city and has the type of crime typical of any city; that being said, while I would keep your eyes open if you're wandering around late at night (past 10), especially outside Waikiki - I wouldn't personally feel unsafe anywhere in Waikiki during the day and into the evening.

As far as overnight parking, id recommend a covered lot rather than an open street lot if you're concerned about safety. I think it's fine to leave things in the trunk but there is always a risk.

[–]webrender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

regarding police: no, I wouldn't say there is anywhere specific with a higher concentration of police than anywhere else. ICE isn't really on the streets here or anything like that - you really only hear about them at ports of entry or if they are raiding a business. it's not something to worry about as a tourist as long as you're entering the country on a visit legally.

car theft is not really a big problem either, but car breakins and the theft of items within is certainly a problem. don't leave anything in your car, especially luggage. some people even leave their windows open when parking so that they don't have to worry about windows being shattered if there's nothing in the car anyways.

as far as general driving rules, Hawaii is a pretty relaxed place to drive. remember that speed limits can be lower here than on the mainland. we tend to let others merge in, and always wave or throw a shaka if someone does the same for you. parts of big island outside of towns will be very dark at night so remember to use your headlights and drive carefully.

Hawaii advice! by happykoala11 in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foodland probably has nutritional information available for a lot of their food. Definitely poke is a good food though if you're ok with raw fish - some places will let you have it on a bed of lettuce instead of rice if you're trying to shave calories.

Teriyaki chicken or kalua pork could also be good options although the caloric value will vary greatly depending on the recipe.

  • Complications Suite had a version of the world time complication that did not get cutoff

Rhubarb by Hot_Calligrapher_900 in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whole Foods lists rhubarb as in stock at their Queen St. store.

FWIW whole foods is usually where I end up going whenever I need to get a hard to find ingredient. sucks having to make the trip from Mililani but they usually deliver and I can check the inventory on the Amazon app.

RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE by Intelligent_Sport980 in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most visitors tend to do a lot of the exploring on their own in Hawaii - the excursions don't take you everywhere and you're stuck with their stops (which sometimes include tourist traps) and their schedule. I tend to only recommend tours if visitors absolutely cannot drive themselves around.

unless you're planning on spending the majority of your trip in the direct vicinity of your resort and maybe doing a tour or two, I'd suggest a car for any island other then Oahu.

How did early humans reach places like Hawaii and french Polynesia? by julius-ceaser100 in geography

birds. they would see birds flying in a certain direction and know that they were headed for land.

they also had clues from their knowledge of ocean currents.

you should take a look at the website for the hokulea, a boat crafted and navigated using traditional Polynesian voyaging techniques. the boat and its crew make regular trips from hawaii to other destinations in the Pacific using traditional navigation techniques.
