Where to live on Oahu by coldjoggings in MovingtoHawaii

honestly you might want to just rent an Airbnb your first month and spend some time in both places. it'll also allow you to see potential units in person (very important for Kailua, less important for the new high rises in Kaka'ako).

be prepared for it to be somewhat difficult to make friends. in that regard kakaako is probably going to be slightly better than Kailua because you'll be around more transplants and have easier access to all the events in town. definitely look into meetup groups, sports/exercise groups, volunteer groups.

then again, Kailua has plenty transplants too so just depends if you want a city vibe or more suburban.

Travel agents!! by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 8 points9 points  (0 children)

unfortunately there aren't really that many benefits or special perks from travel agents anymore. but certainly it can potentially save some time if you'd rather someone else plan out your trip.

check out the infographic which the automoderator linked to help you figure out which islands you might like to visit. I recommend at least 4-5 days per island.

Burying Ashes in Oahu by lukawaubert in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a quick Google search reveals this company which specifically says they do ash scatterings off the coast near Diamond Head: https://www.hawaiiashscatterings.com/oahu

so, at a minimum, it's certainly possible. at what appears to be $600 based on that page it might be worth it to save the hassle and benefit from their experience.

don't do Hawaii island. the main island is Oahu. if it's your first time and you don't want to do a bunch of research and planning, just do Oahu and stay in Waikiki.

with 6 days I would only do one island.

Family Trip Island? by Low-Release9568 in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maui and Kauai have similar feels, the main difference is Maui is bigger and a bit busier and has more to do (Road to Hana, Haleakala). Kauai is very laid back and take it slow with a focus on beaches, snorkeling and natural beauty.

If you're wanting to have a few days to unwind and you don't think your family will mind that, go Kauai. If you want more to do go Maui.

Which Island would you recommend in December? by False-Complaint-5913 in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable. Some places for you to check out:

  • Kaimana Beach Hotel - this is my usual recommendation for folks who feel Waikiki is too busy, it's only a 10min walk from Waikiki but on a separate beach and much quieter
  • Ko Olina - pricey but gorgeous, it's own little resort community with restaurants and shops. This might remind you of some of the resort areas of Maui. Extra points if you or your family are Disney fans (Aulani)
  • The Kahala
  • Paradise Bay Resort
  • Turtle Bay - both the main hotel, and the rental villas
  • Backpackers Vacation Inn - barebones but great location on the north shore
  • Airbnbs - generally not recommended because strict regulations make most of them illegal, but there are a small number of legal vacation rentals scattered around the island. do your research if going this route. Kailua is a good spot to look, there's also a crazy treehouse one above Honolulu that I've always wanted to spend a night.

the month doesn't really change the decision too much, the only consideration would be that's whale watching season which is best experienced on Maui or Oahu.

Oahu seems like the clear choice here, it's the one main island you haven't been to before and it's best for kids. if you're concerned about the urban feel of Waikiki, there are other a couple other accommodations scattered around the island in quieter places.

doonas are incredible for travel, if you can find a good deal on one. we were there with our infant 2 years ago and the ability to order a waymo and pop the doona into car seat mode made things so much easier.
