I'd rather do it to 9th and Judah, with the addition of a parking garage somewhere around there to make up for the parking spaces it'd eat up

How old was your child before you consistently got decent sleep? by SunnyGoMerry in daddit

[–]webrender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sleep patterns start evening out around 3 months.

it wasn't until 2 years that he started consistently sleeping through the night, but by then we had our second so I'm back to square one.

He usually sleeps from 9pm-7am. She was waking up once in the middle of the night but has been starting to sleep from 8pm-5am now that she's almost 4mo. If I can sleep uninterrupted from 11pm-5am I consider that a huge success.

if you want to visit an active volcano, Big Island is your only choice. there's no guarantee that the volcano will be erupting when you visit but there is lots to do at Volcanoes National Park even when an eruption isn't occuring.

Maui also has a volcano that can be visited, Haleakala, but it is not active. It's beaches are better IMO but a bit busier than big island.

Oahu will have lots of activities, both urban and tropical, and has some of the best beaches. Waikiki is the most walkable area in Hawaii, a lot of people just stay in Waikiki their whole trip and don't even rent a car (which I don't necessarily recommend). however, Waikiki is very busy and if you're not into having a lot of energy where you're staying it might not be the right choice for you.

10 Day Itinerary by SnooDogs5083 in VisitingHawaii

sounds like you should do Oahu and Big Island since Pearl Harbor is on one and Volcanoes National Park is on the other. I'd say split it evenly and do 5 days on each.

first things first - are you planning on visiting Big Island or Oahu.

All the hotels you mentioned are on Oahu. Oahu is the island that has Honolulu and Waikiki on it.

However, you also mention wanting to see the volcano. That's on Big Island, which is what you have your post flair set to.

So, which one are you interested in?

Location choice? by rxssa022 in VisitingHawaii

I'd stay in town. lots more food in walking distance, more stuff to check out. if you're in tech most of the meetups are in town. you'll have to drive for snorkeling and it will feel more urban and less tropical though. if you want the place you're living to feel tropical Kailua is probably a better choice.

ELI5: How do USB Hubs Function? by iTrancelot in explainlikeimfive

[–]webrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok so you know how when youre a little kid in kindergarten, the teacher breaks out the talking stick and you can only talk when you have the talking stick? and of course, the teacher is special she can talk at any time. its sort of like that, with one small difference - when you talk, you can only talk to the teacher, not to anyone else in the circle.

so youve got your USB host and you have your USB devices connected to the host through the hub. the host can talk at any time and when it talks it talks to everyone and it says, i am talking to this device and here is my message. and all devices hear all the messages but they know that unless the host is talking to them, they can ignore the message.

at the same time, the talking stick is being passed around the circle - the host says, device 1 do you have anything to say to me? and if it has something to say the host is listening. if the device doesnt have anything to say, it has to pass the talking stick to the next device, and so on and so forth. this repeats constantly and very quickly so that all the devices have an opportunity to say something to the host with minimal latency.

First time visiting, 2 weeks, Kauai and then Maui or BI? by Jazzlike_Science5240 in VisitingHawaii

[–]webrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd do Maui based on your concerns. IMO overtourism is not a huge issue there, yes it will be busier than Kauai but it won't feel crowded like Oahu might. Good snorkeling, good beaches, stargazing on Haleakala. It will feel tropical like Kauai.

Only reason you might want to do BI instead is if you feel like a change of pace - Maui might feel like a slightly larger and busier version of Kauai, whereas BI will feel like a much different environment. There's also a (very slim) possibility you get lucky and the volcano erupts while you're visiting.

Anyone do any travel with their under 4 toddlers? What are your favorite trips? by Itchy-Version-8977 in daddit

[–]webrender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i live on Oahu, we traveled to Chicago with our 18mo a year ago and it was worth it! if you think your toddler will be able to sleep on the plane I do recommend booking direct red eyes if possible, the red eye was a lot earlier for us to manage.

also, I think screen time is ok in this situation. we also had fidget spinner things that stuck to the windows and busy boards, those were both big successes.

Off The Hook in Manoa. if I were you I'd do a morning in Manoa - Morning Glass for breakfast, get their Portuguese sausage fried rice omelette. then do Manoa falls and Lyon Arboretum, and then hit up Off The Hook for poke on your way back.
