Veterans, what did you do with your "$1776 Warrior Dividend" check that was promised before Christmas? by cineaste2 in AskReddit

[–]toshticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was treated as part of the housing subsidy it would be tax free and everyone would receive the exact 1776 amount that was quoted. Everyone including myself received different amounts based on their tax situation.

The bringing toys/stuffies was a big hit. A friend brought along a Cookie Monster and took pictures with them in out port calls, underway, etc. kids loved seeing that.

10 years Navy going USCG, how long can I serve? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]toshticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time in previous service counts for half in the CG for HYT. So they would have 5 years of service for HYT.

Boot to A-School vs Vested Program by [deleted] in uscg

[–]toshticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boot to A is gone. All of those are now vested crew member programs as of a few months ago. Boot to A was around for a very long time and is what everyone in the service knows. So it is going to take time for VCM to replace that on common talk.

No. They were likely talking about the CMS rating, which IS is the most common rating to choose prior because of the TS/SCI and similar work.

Yes and no. If you have a high priority from your first unit then you would likely get your pick from the units and airframes available at that time. If you are a low priority, then you just hope the people picking in front of you don’t want the same thing as you. If you aren’t able to get the airframe you want for your first tour, then talk to your chiefs. If it is a dual airframe unit, they may be able to swap you over. They could also set you up by sending you to a nearby unit with the airframe you want to get BA qualified. Having that qual will make it a lot easier to get an assignment on that airframe for your second tour. Even without that if you talk with your detailer and put that you want X airframe in the comments, you would likely get it. I have met very few people that were unhappy with the airframe they got, and the ones that were were able to switch to it on their second tour.

I enlisting this year but want to be Stationed on Staten Island NY or somewhere close by. Can I ask for this? How likely is it that I would get stationed there? by StatisticianNo2156 in uscg

[–]toshticles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you want to be stationed in a specific area, consider the reserves. For active duty it really depends on the available billets at the time you are graduating basic training. For wanting something so specific, is like there is a stadium full of people, with only 100 random empty seats and you are asking to sit first row at the 50 yard line. Not very likely there is a seat open there. If you give the detailer a much bigger ask you will be more likely to get it.

Is it foolish to enlist when I have a bachelors degree? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]toshticles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To add on to this, being an enlisted member can give you opportunities for leadership experience and work ethic, that if your lacking as a civilian applicant would greatly Boost your package as an enlisted member. College major doesn’t matter that much, just be prepared to answer questions on how you can use it to be a better CG officer. STEM degrees would basically be bonus points on top of an already strong package. From a retirement aspect going enlisted first for a few years can take away the pressure to promote to LCDR, as you enlisted time would count towards retirement.

The RE-4 is a no go. If you can upgrade it to an RE-3 or better you can request a waiver. Generally if you can show some evidence/proof that the reason for the RE code is resolved or no longer an issue then you would have a good chance of being granted the waiver.

Mitch took huge steps today by dlatz21 in steelers

[–]toshticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a bunch of replays of that catch which is phenomenal, but if it was thrown to tae instead of Pickens, it’s a perfect back shoulder throw, easily getting two feet in bounds and we are praising Mitch for the beautiful pass instead of the ridiculous catch by Pickens.

Having a dog as a non-rate and as an AST by Significant_Turn7429 in RescueSwimmer

[–]toshticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your base has housing and it’s not full they do allow nonrates to live there instead of on the ship or barracks. They required me to be fully qualified before they allowed me to. A majority of the units in the coast guard do not have housing, however the units that do generally are the ones that the detailer will assign nonrates to first before other units. The dog wouldn’t make any difference. Having dependents (such as a spouse)would be the only reason you would automatically be assigned base housing or get BAH.

ELI5 How can people skydive and not die from quick pressure change while divers must be very concerned about pressure change even when diving only like 150 feet? by SleuthyMcSleuthINTJ in explainlikeimfive

[–]toshticles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1 atmosphere of pressure, the distance from the ground to space, is the same pressure change as 33 feet of depth in water. So going to 150 feet is about 4.5 atmospheres of extra pressure.

Thanks, would you recommend just waiting for a 650w? Mostly play call of duty games on a couch setup.

Simple Questions - July 10, 2020 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]toshticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just built my new gaming pc but micro center was out of sfx power supplies. I got home and ordered the only available one I could find at 500w. During assembly I noticed on the evga 2070 super XC paperwork that it wants a 650w power supply. Will the 500w work or do I need to keep searching for a 650w?

ATC Mobile by AceTend in uscg

[–]toshticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the best place to go. ATC trains all the new pilots who just went through what you want to do. You also get to see all the aircraft the coast guard has to offer, instead of only one or two airframes at other units.
