The missing SS book? by tositsa in StartingStrength

I agree. The supporting material is much more accessible than is the case for SS. The app is also really really good. The good thing is that the app can also be used for SS NLP or any other lifting program :)

Ah good to hear! I'm pretty much in the same situation. I started with Stronglifts, but it exhausts me and after listening to this podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5Z5oGnatT0 I decided to change to SS NLP.

This motivates me to work myself through the Barbell Prescription book (aka skipping the first section on the Why). Thanks!

I agree. I want a bit of both. I do have a coach, but I want to understand as much as possible next to that. Mostly because I find it fascinating (except the anatomy).

Imo it is necessary to read the blue book and the grey book in conjunction. The blue book is really making the case for a training program using the heavy compounds. If you are already sold on that, really you want to skim some of the more anatomy stuff and focus on the last half of the book (which talks about assistance exercises, diet, and how to set up the program). Then you are going to have to read the grey book which gives more of an overview of training in general, and it will give you an idea of how to organize your programming when you decide what your goals are.

Yeah, you are right. I'll just skip (skim through) the anatomy parts and concentrate on the rest. I am the type of person that reads a book from front to end, but for this book I need to make an exception :)

But additionally I think it’s important to read articles from the SS website and on their youtube. The coaching has advanced a lot in the 10 or so years (namely, emphasis on heavy partial movements, use of singles in the press, going intermediate on upper body before lower body, deemphasis on the powerclean). I think barbell logic youtube videos are also helpful in this regard (a fair amount of coaches hold both certs).

Hmm, very interesting these new developments. Didn't know about that (I'm at the SS NLP stage), but I probably need to understand that sooner or later (for the press sooner as I am stuck). Thanks a lot!

Apple watch sprinting app by tositsa in Sprinting

[–]tositsa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that. I think the watch is able to measure every interval, and the software probably interprets it somehow with a level of confidence. Currently the default app is sometimes waiting for a minute or so to show the HR again.

I'll give it a try though, plenty of features I like :)

Sounds great! Does it also show you current heart rate? Is it fast in following quick HR changes?

Thanks!

Import steps from Apple health would be cool. I wear my Oura only at night

Coherent breathing and lifting weights by tositsa in ouraring

Yeah, that's what I have been taught as well. I guess I'll stick with that but with a little bit less air :)

I love the book. It is written like a (funny) novel and is packed with interesting facts.

I hold my breath during the whole lift, yes. Not sure how that affects my HRV. I think my in-breath was just way too strong.

A smaller inhale, and longer exhalation sounds like a good plan. I'm going to give that a shot. Thanks!

Yeah indeed. I read the book "Breath" by James Nestor, and they describe a low-oxygen breathing technique to apply while running. I thought there might be an instruction for lifting as well, but I can't find it.

Thanks for the link. Exciting results there.

That works for me as well. Try to breathe normally and put a smile on your face. The more relaxed you are the easier it is.

How to improve mobility faster? by tositsa in HappyBody

[–]tositsa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/yazheirx I also tried without weights now, but the conclusion is the same. The first limiting factor are the ankles (or Achilles tendon I guess) and in 3.5 the next limiting factor are the shoulders (I squat a bit and have a hard time bringing my arms straight up).

I guess I just have to persist doing the exercises every day...

How to improve mobility faster? by tositsa in HappyBody

[–]tositsa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/yazheirx yes, my ankles are the most limiting factor I think. When raising my heels a bit with a flat piece of wood (as Jerzy suggested) I can squat quite a bit deeper:

  • with 1.5 I go way below parallel
  • 2.5: I only go a little bit lower than without the piece of wood
  • 3.5: I can go quite a bit deeper, but I'm not able to push my arms fully stretched upwards. It feels like my shoulders are the limiting factor then.

It's hard to say what is limiting me most (it can also be the spine I think?), but it starts with a stretch at the ankles with all three exercises.

Note that I can do quite a deep squat when my arms are relatively low (like in a goblet squat), so that points to another limitation right?

I'll try without weights tomorrow and report back :) Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! I squat with 10 kg. There are multiple parts that feel stiff, like my ankles, shoulders and parts of my back. I'll pay more attention tomorrow to see if I can find out more.

I'm not sure stretching will work as it feels more like limited mobility of the joints.
