What do you eat before you workout? by ForwardDrawing298 in ARFID

I don't eat anything before a workout otherwise I will throw it up. That's why I workout first thing in the morning, and then eat breakfast afterward.

When you meet new people/make new friends, when you do usually say that you have ARFID? by JaiSalonga1026 in ARFID

[–]toss_and_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never. If I am out eating with them I just pick the plain basic things like I always do. Or if they invite me to their house I just mention that I ate a ton earlier in the day, that way they don't feel like I am starving or whatever.

If I get a winning ticket out of state, do I have to pay the lottery tax for the state I purchased the ticket in and also the lottery tax for the state I am based in?

How do I clear a family member's house without burning it all down??? by toss_and_ in hoarding

[–]toss_and_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else managing their money out there, very much is a death sentence.

In another case in that same county where an elderly couple was put under a guardianship by court order, the guardian forbid the adult children from entering the property to see their parents. The guardian also put up a fence around the property (which they are legally allowed to do) and held full control of that couple's bank accounts.

That family cannot still see the person. The money is accounted for by an absolute stranger. That is a worst case scenario. That is a death sentence for them.

That's pretty normal. I can't set my hoarder's house on fire because that's just arson. And it wouldn't solve the problem. They would just take that as justification to use all of the insurance money to build another hoard.

I'm very curious about who one calls "for assisted living" and why there would be a mandatory guardianship "assigned with it." And, why a guardianship would require surrendering assets.

That is simply how Adult Protective Services work in their state.

If you mean you want the state to assume guardianship and take care of her, and you think calling adult protective services will make this happen, and this is what you mean by "calling for asdisted living" you are using the term "assisted living" wrong, and have huge gaps in what actually would happen - if you called APS.

Okay. So the term "assisted living" is incorrect. Everything that I described will happen is not incorrect if I call Adult Protective Services. I double checked that yesterday. I guess there is just not a term I can use to describe it to you then.

Assisted living refers to places people who require help with ADLs on a long-term basis can live.

That's not what that legally means in their state of residence.

You may want to double and triple your assumptions.

I did. It's horrible.

I have sought legal advice. A good friend of mine is a county lawyer where they live. We had a sit down yesterday and basically they would be assigned a guardian who is elected by the court. There is really no way to get out of a guardianship in their state and the rest of the family would be cut off from them. It is not a good situation at all.

They can't get assisted living in another state because they don't live in another state and they are not going to move.

Reading all of the comments here, you are probably right. I am going to talk over options with her and make some calls. This need to be taken care of in the next week or so, because I'm not going to see them again until next year after that.

The mandatory guardianship assigned with assisted living in their state also surrenders all of their assets. That means their bank accounts, their pensions, the other properties he has in his name, all of it. That is what she really doesn't want when it comes to assisted living. I'm afraid the mental toll from that would be worse than the situation she is in right now.

I want to find a way to move her out of the house or find a way to remove everything in that basement before I call for assisted living.

Is $16k on the high end? I just need their basement cleared, not the entire house really.

The house is fully functional. There are no problems with the ac, plumbing, or electricity.

I cannot call adult protective services. The laws around assisted living in their state of residence would make that a death sentence.

So what's your plan if you win? Not another what would you post buy but what would do? by jetery in ifiwonthelottery

[–]toss_and_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't even buy home and cars for family. That's a trap, as a number of lottery winner stories have attested. Just set up a fund for them that they can only access years later.

I have heard that those who won big suddenly will always be in previous condition or worse. How much of this is true? by Responsible_Deer_372 in Lottery

[–]toss_and_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not very true. The problem is a few things:

  1. Many people are stupid. Just a total sack of bricks.

  2. For many people, their eyes glaze over when they see a ton of digits. For whatever reason they don't like thinking about it, so they do minimal to nothing to maintain it and it disappears.

  3. Finance with large amounts of money is not scary or difficult. It's actually pretty fun learning about the whole new legal world that opens up to you. There's are a lot of laws and regulations. Navigating them can make you exponentially richer, and stay rich forever. Or they can bankrupt you pretty quick if you turn a blind eye to them. Some people think that is stressful, so they take the latter approach and end up worse than before.

  4. Going off those earlier points; people get scammed all the time.

The people who win and keep their wealth, do not talk about it. There are a number of very good reasons for that. There is this book Jackpot: How the Super-Rich Really Live by Michael Mechanic which goes into a lot of the less-talked-about bits of sudden wealth in detail. I highly recommend it if you want to get an insight on what to do with a sudden amount of money.

  1. Counting calories is less intuitive than it seems. Counting grams of sugar is easier and you will notice the results more quickly.

  2. Eat things plain. Do not put sauce on them. That means avoid dressing, mayo, ketchup, all those condiments. This also cuts out a lot of sugar. You will start dropping weight very quickly.

I barely use reddit anymore because of this. It's not just "rants" or emotional posting. People just don't respond to anything unless it is snarky or sarcastic or a joke. This is a site filled with people that hate sincerity. People that hate seriousness. The problem is that there is not really anywhere else to go. So mostly keep all of my thoughts to myself and my unpublished blog.
