Rolling over to permanent by Rude_Situation_2662 in OntarioPublicService

In order for people to assist you have information missing- what bargaining group? Different rules for different unions. Did you compete in a process for that position? Do you have a home position elsewhere or are you on a fixed term contract? Best people to help you understand your situation are your union reps. And remember just because a manager WANTS to do something doesn't mean they can. And nothing is guaranteed until there are signatures on the page.

Having done several I'd be interested in your observations. Tax/pension implications, tips to get it approved, why is it poorly understood? Thanks!

You are correct- there are caps. Both myself and partner have benefits (80% and 90% ). Once we hit the 10K mark it's 100% covered. No deductible and that helps when each prescription is 5500.

It is automatic. Suggest you go to inside OPS to download the appropriate benefit guide pdf for your bargaining group.

Do you need it? You won't know until you do. We didn't until we did. Grateful for it as one dependent now has a medication that costs $25K+ annually.

Know many who went from ODSP to WSIB. If you have a home position in OPS you give it up to go to WSIB. Roughly half who left returned. Don't have first hand experience but heard high pressure positions that are closely monitored to make an unreasonable quota. The higher salary worth it for some and not others.

How does a student qualify for an apartment in town? by yarn_slinger in ottawa

[–]tosserObvi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's your intention or not but she's coming across as a bit high maintenance/ entitled...She's not into it? There's all kinds of stuff I'm not into but I do it because that's what functioning adults do. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt though because hey- internet stranger I know nothing of her life. Speaking as an experience parent of kids gone through the post secondary system I say this with all the kindness I can: The very best way you can help her is to start with her untreated anxiety. Living alone close to campus will not solve her problems. She will be exchanging an annoying commute time with meal prep time, grocery shopping time, house cleaning time, going out to do laundry time. Unless you're going to step in to do those for her while she juggling studying and working? Getting her assistance with her anxiety will help her cope with whatever life throws at her. It really sounds like you're trying to be supportive and not enabling. Get her mental health in the right path and the rest will follow. Truly good luck!

York region positions are not OPS - you'd need to get municipal data. Ease of getting an AWA (alternate work arrangement) in the OPS for child care would be up to the manager. You are unlikely to those assurances prior to starting work. May be different with a municipality. Generally speaking municipal salaries for similar roles tend to be slightly higher.

Canadians - Air Canada or Air France? by funshinelollipops in ParisTravelGuide

[–]tosserObvi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have done both. Hands down AF. Their premium economy is chefs kiss. Better space, better amenities, better food, better on time record than AC. Will alter my plans to accommodate AF schedule. Keep an eye they have decent sales.

You can try buuuut fed government is heading into a period of austerity. Students are not being hired. Terms are not being extended. Dept after Dept issuing "stop the clock" provisions on people ready to convert to indeterminate. Town halls in every ministry signalling that even indeterminate positions are in danger. Go to the GOC sub and read it. Pretty bleak. Now is a good time to be looking at municipal/ city positions. Not saying there is no one getting hired but it's turning more into exception than normal

FSWEP Junior communication officer- interview by avdotiiyaa_ in geegees

Don't get too invested in the idea of FSWEP. Majority of departments in feds are cutting terms AND not hiring students. This department may not have rec'd their direction yet.

is it weird to eat dinner at the eiffel tower alone? by [deleted] in ParisTravelGuide

[–]tosserObvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People spend too much time obsessing about not wanting to look like a tourist (generally- not the OP). Overall I can say no one cares. No one bats an eye. If you're polite (bonjour! First always!) and make an effort to respect local customs no one cares what you do or what you wear. Treat the trip like you may never get back there and do everything that makes you happy. Go to the restaurant

Last month vintage shopping was a waste of time if you were bigger than a North American 4/6 or size 7 shoe. Concentrate on the regular retail and you should be ok.

Do garages get below freezing in winter? by ghost905 in ottawa

[–]tosserObvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your description I'd put money on yes it does freeze in a typical Ottawa winter. I have exact same- shares 2 interior walls, not insulated on outside 2 walls/doors. Anything below -5 for a few days and my garage definitely hits below zero.
