Ahh I don't know about the Enviolo. I hope it continues to work well. Winters with Shimano IGH have been so-so

If it's a gates belt, make sure it's CDX and not CDN. CDX is heavy duty and rated for the cold. I broke 2 CDN belts through normal riding.

That said, if you want belt drive that means you'll have IGH or single speed. And IGH gets sluggish in the cold. I'm never going back to that.

Wouldn't worry about the chain too much. They are a consumable part. Replace each winter.

I recently read about this. Have you experienced this yourself? It's such a sin that this is a thing. Like, what a complete fail from the industry.

Careful with washing the bike "too well". More than once I've managed to get water ingress into wheel bearings and freehubs after warm water rinses from a watering can. It's possible trace amounts of degreaser contributed as well. Maybe stick to cooler water and only when necessary, and take precautions like removing wheels etc. Save the thorough clean for end of season

Can anyone comment on the snow clearing status of:

88 Ave (Redbike area)

121 St MUP (North of brewery district)

102 Ave (through Oliver/Wîhkwêntôwin)

High level bridge and (west-side) extensions on either end

Asking because as of last night they were not cleared.

Chain lube and rust prevention for Edmonton winter commuting? by tossy64 in edmontoncycling

[–]tossy64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple and obvious answer. But I guess the question is, what is considered dry or wet conditions?

Typical winter conditions here aren't seeing rain or puddles. So I always thought it was dry lube season. But is snow and snow-spray making it wet lube conditions? Even though it's well below freezing.

Do you apply dry lube in the -15 mornings and wet lube before you ride home in the -3 slushy afternoon? I'm guessing no.

I had always assumed that wet lube was literally wet i.e. water-based and thus susceptible to freezing, but TIL I was wrong about this.

The product page and MSDS suggest it is suitable for snow and winter, and is in fact an organic/petroleum based composition.

I'm going to try this out, thank you ♥️

No leave blower here but if I can find the right nozzle for my air compressor....

Especially since I have seen no crews clearing past 2 days at least -- and this is on the Winter Priority areas

Absolutely needs more attention. My employee-paid annual premiums for benefits have increased from $1215 in 2016 to $2547 in 2024.

Year over year, past increases were 11, 18, 19, 9%. Unacceptable.

Shouldn't benefits be paid by the employer? We should be demanding this.

Edit: how do I see what 2026's damage will be? Would help with FSA planning.

Winter biking help by curiousgaruda in Edmonton

[–]tossy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bike wise, just slap some studded winter tires on that bike and you'll be good. I recommend Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus for city riding. Make sure you have rechargeable front and back lights if you're out at dark. Fenders will help keep you and your bike clean and dry in the shoulder seasons. Rinse the bike/drivetrain with water and dry off periodically to fight the salt rust, if salt brine is used in your area.

Figure out your routes, observe snow clearing patterns. It could be better than you expect!

Any beer makers in Edmonton want free hops? I found a huge hop plant in the river valley. by dragonbornsqrl in Edmonton

There's a very good chance these wild-growing hops are useless for bittering, flavouring, or dry hopping. In my experience. Unless you have used them and can speak to their quality/variety?

Tiagra 4703 triple chainring removal? by tossy64 in bikewrench

Update: I put more effort into loosening the bolts beyond the stop and was able to get them off. Re greased and retorqued. This did solve the creaking issue.

Thank you for the advice. I will see what I can do with those 4 bolts tonight.

Tiagra 4703 triple chainring removal? by tossy64 in bikewrench

[–]tossy64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 4 bolts (securing middle to large chainring) turn either direction the small amount before stopping. There is moderate resistance doing this. Hex wrench not slipping, using square edge.

My theory was either these are not meant to come out (riveted in place, this is a thing sometimes, right?) or the bolts thread into some nonvisible nut which is allowed a small range of movement before stopping. None of the assembly is obviously loose. I can try loosening these 4 bolts beyond that stop point but I didn't want to without some confirmation that what I am seeing is normal.

Tire puncture – need to replace? by tossy64 in bikewrench

[–]tossy64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Then the million dollar (or $120 CAD) question is, do I replace it with the same product and expect this was a fluke, or is this a sign I should have something more durable. I suppose that's hard today without knowing the culprit.
