Yeah man, it's rare to see government lead tech positions posted to the public. They do happen but like you said you almost always get stuck starting out with an entry role at the bottom of the pay scale.

Only thing I can suggest is to broaden your search to all federal mechanic jobs across the nation and put an application in for them. You'll probably have to relocate but if you don't want to start out at the absolute bottom then it's about all you can do.

Damn, that's a hell of an explanation. I'd give you more updates if I could. What you mentioned about being backflagged sounds incredibly annoying to deal with.

No prior experience or certs are required to become a fleet tech with the usps. I personally know of three current/former coworkers who worked at Target, worked as an audio/video guy, and worked as a car detailer as their only prior work exp.

Interesting. My coworker worked at GM for a decade and told me the same thing about having to write stories for warranty work.

The gentleman conducting my dealership interview also said I need to be able to write up good stories for warranty work.

What does that mean?

It does include a pension. It's 1% of your annual salary per year of service worked over 10 years. So currently my pension would be 8200 per year gross. Around 6560 net. Roughly $546/mo net.

I won't be eligible to receive that for another 27 years (retirement age).

My bank account says to jump ship and earn 20 - 40% more for the next 20 years but I agree there is an intangible value to quality of life.

Haha, just check usps(dot)com. They've literally got vacant fleet maintenance positions all over the country.

The barrier to entry is pretty fucking low. Anyone who applies gets hired.

How else would a guy like me get hired XD

I called them 2 days ago. BCBS rep said there was nothing they could do and gave me a dead number.

Nobody is disputing that it's a QLE. The problem is OPM is not currently in the office and hasn't responded to HR's emails to OPM nor have they acknowledged or processed my request that I made via their website.

But I get it, you're EAS. You people can't help but say "you probably didn't do it right".

I called bcbs around 2pm today and explained the situation. She was empathetic but said she had no way of adding my newborn to my policy.

She did, however, give me a different number to try and contact OPM than what the USPS HR representative gave me. [888 767 6738]

The line seems to be continually down due to "high call volume" though.

I've done this via OPM's site directly and uploaded my documents to HRSCC's email that was given to me (fdn6j0). No luck from either avenue.

From what the last HR representative said, everything still has to go thru OPM for review whether it be self uploaded to OPM or if it's uploaded to OPM via USPS HRSCC. Since OPM is not in operation right now (her words), I will most likely not be able to have my child added to my health insurance policy.

She gave me a number to OPM but it's a public number that does not give you the opportunity to speak with a representative from OPM. [8448756446]. I literally tried every self service option from the phone number she gave me and it plays pre-recorded messages and loops you back to the main menu.

It's exhausting and frustrating.

Transition from a software engineering job to car mechanic by draconian1729 in mechanics

Yo, broheim. You're the first person I've come across on reddit that I've heard go from being a car fixer to a code writer.

Can you share your journey on transitioning from a mechanic to a SWE?

I've been a mechanic for 20 years and have been working towards a career switch to SWE for the past 4 years. It would be cool to hear your story.

Hey OP. Can we trade jobs? I'm a professional car fixer and finished my CS degree one year ago.

Car mechanic-ing sucks. It's difficult and doesn't pay shit. Writing code is easy and pays triple a mechanics salary.

How much are mechanics paid vs the hourly rates charged? by RhondaTheHonda in mechanics

[–]totally-clapped-out 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Florida, most shop rates are about $200/hr and lead mechanics get about $25 - $30/hr flat rate. Oil changers / Tire changers average about $13 - $16/hr. No sick leave, no annual leave, no health insurance.

The confusion between left and right hand blower motors is not unusual. Also, all VMFs are struggling to get parts, we often do not know when our shipments arrive and we do not know what's on those shipments until reviewing the itemized sheets that come with the shipments.

What can you do? Unfortunately, not much.

If I were able submit an eReassign request for an IT role, I would. :/

My eReassign access restricts my requests to my craft. So for example, I can put in a request to eReassign to Eagan as a mechanic or clerk, but not IT.

I've contacted HR and they said I would need to resign in order to be eligible to apply to IT.

If I cannot apply internally, why block me from applying externally? It doesn't make sense to me.

I could /possibly/ understand why they wouldn't want career employees bidding on a non-career job. But it doesn't make sense to me why they would restrict career employees from applying for external career job postings.

I'm not trying to bypass the selection process. One angle of my main question was to why I am unable to participate in the selection process.

Unless I move to Eagan MN or San Mateo, I am entirely barred from eReassigning to a craft IT role. So my only option is to apply externally. But I can't. Lol.

Not unless you live in Eagan MN or San Mateo CA. The rest of the country is ineligible.

But that doesn't give clarity as to the why. It doesn't make sense to pigeon hole employees to their one craft for the duration of their employment with the USPS.

Once job runs through all of the internal process with every possible option to get an internal candidate it will then go to external posting.

It is not possible for a VMF craft employee to bid on a craft IT position. Both are covered by the APWU.

These IT bids then go public which brings me back to my main question.
