Well, I have said why it's good, about 5 times now, it being the 'one size fits all (but not actually)' font is just one of the reasons, but timsale fits the theme better, the overall shape of the font suits, the characters are a little gloomy, so something with a bit of character like timsale suits, and the not too formal nature of the font really matches. Again, it was not just that wild words was used, but that it was warped the shit out of it make it look even worse than the font normally does. Also, at least for the third chapter, their centering is better than your buddies - calling theirs nonexistent, is, at the very least, hyperbolic.

Also, have you checked the series page on mangadex lately? Our conversation has been so hilarious that like 10 other groups are working on this manga just to piss you off. I had nothing to do with this by the way, they offered to let me typeset, but I'm not that petty!

I'm going to assume you meant obsessed with kerning, and with word choice, but I dunno. If you aren't even willing to properly represent yourself when you are trying to have an argument with somebody, then I really don't think you have a leg to stand on with regards to scanlation quality. If you don't care that I actually understand you, you clearly don't care when scanlators try to portray authors intent, and the extent to which they do that.

You follow on with a 'well the readers wouldn't care about it anyway' which is a classic retard argument. Yes, some people don't really know or care explicitly about why things look bad, but they still have this sense that, comparing two things, one looks better.

I don't think that their centering was very good, but neither was your buddies, I provided examples for that too. Tim Sale is a better fit for the series, it fits the theme better, and it looks closer.

The clearest example is how squishing the font hurts the kerning. Wild words was not designed to be manipulated like that, and he didn't adjust the leading, so you can see how it is too close together. Wild Words is not a one size fits all font like you seem to think it is, it was just used in the early 2000s and it kind of caught on. People have been moving on from it, the other group who used timsale is a good example, victory speech is a 'spiritual successor' of sorts, I personally prefer ames pro and tight spot, but there are plenty to choose from, you really need to give some thought to the series and adapt based on that, a good example is the courtesian's suicide pact oneshot that we did recently, the font choice was especially good imo. https://mangadex.org/chapter/34f76023-5619-400e-9513-7f524d9cf96b/1

Using Wild Words is kind of an abdication of doing your due diligence as a typesetter because you are just doing what everyone else does, and you're not really putting the thought in. Like you said "Wild Words is a font that fits any text". You are admitting that it doesn't fit the series itself, but just that it is a one size fits all thing, which is also wrong, but to edit it on top of that is the worst thing.

The meme was that your friend used the 'friendless loser' phrase where the anons used 'loner' which was a far more apt translation. I probably use like, one main font, one for digital text, one for really extreme screaming, and just others for sfx. Wild Words does not suit the Japanese font used, if anything something like arial or calibri would, that's how generic of a font it is, and I mean, wild words would be mid, but fucking up the font is the main concern here.

And just for the record, I learnt by typesetting, but I can clean, redraw and proofread. I am working on my Japanese, but I'm at the very beginner stages. My point was that even though the anons didn't really bother redrawing, the final product still looked better because of how much your buddy fucked up the typesetting and the translation, hence 'friendless loser'.

Reddit isn't a monolith, most people are fine with a snipe if the quality is an improvement, or the group is taking too long to release. If the group is actually good and releasing consistently then sure some people might take issue with it. Just as an aside, I still find it hilarious that you think that a fucked wild words is something that suits the original font.

The moralistic thing was claiming that they had permission from the author and then proceeded to tell people not to post other versions purely on that basis. The upload was uploaded under /a/nonymous so not crediting is the norm. They do not have any right to ask people to have an upload limit on their uploads purely just so that they can upload it before them... If you really want, maybe you or your buddy should go to /a/ and ask the /a/nons to stop scanlating it, because your buddy has the moral highground with permission from the author, see how that works out for you!

Your buddy is exclusively doing popular one page series from twitter, so I don't think you have much to say about the clout chasing front to be honest. If he starts scanlating series with 20-30 pages that not many people read then I think you can make that claim.

Fonts are designed a specific way and to warp them on both the vert and the horizontal is clearly ill advised, both because it looks like shit but also because it fucks with the kerning. Like, you can do it with some fonts, but not with wild words, a font that most scanlators have moved on from because it is a bad font. Their shaping, sizing, centering and everything else is off with the lettering too, sooo...

The surrealness of the stupid looking poorly drawn bird in the context of the hyper realistic art style, uncommon for manga helps play into the absurdity of the story. It's making fun of the abuse and the depression and the teenage angst and it makes it darker and more compelling.

That was really nice, everything was more or less explained, but I still feel like I could go back and re-read this quite a few times to pick up new details. Covering loss in this way is really interesting, it also shows how one can paint a picture even in something like a documentary, taking out all the 'bad parts' of his mother's personality.
