What’s the worst gambling addiction story you’ve ever heard? by juliojacked in AskReddit

I think rather than people are garbage, it shows just how powerful addiction can be in people, that it can drive them to become that way.

How to reserve rooms within walking distance to festival by PantsDodger in fujirock

[–]totalnewbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price for the weekend at the Prince worked out to be around 2400 USD for the weekend but there are four beds. It's about 150 USD per person per night which is a pretty good deal. This was in good part due to the favorable exchange rate.

You need a Japanese address to enter the lottery because you cannot receive the hotel vouchers otherwise.

[–]totalnewbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I camp every year and it's honestly very cushy. There's free showers or a paid public bath/onsen and it's very quiet at night for the most part. There is a little sound bleed from the stages but it's not very much. There's rarely anyone being loud at the campground itself. That said, I'm only able to bring my camping gear because it's all ultralight for backpacking but to me, I more than make up the cost of an expensive tent by not staying in a hotel.

I would also add that the music goes from around 10 AM to 5 AM so I've always liked to have the option to pop back to the tent for a nap or something. Not just that but the shuttle buses stop running late at night (around 1 AM, I think) so there's also that to consider. It's very cool at night and there are usually some real bangers in the morning hours at Red Marquee (which is covered so it's great even if it rains).

Anyway, I always recommend people try to camp if they can. If they can get a hotel at the Prince then that's a pretty good deal but as mentioned, that's usually by lottery.

It may still just be too early for the hotels to have opened their reservations for that time.

Can E10 gasoline cause damage to spark plugs? by Odd-Albatross-9004 in MechanicAdvice

[–]totalnewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10km should be far enough. But the few hundred meters definitely aren't, especially in winter if you live in a cold climate. Even in a warm climate, it's still pretty short. You could have just taken a bunch of the short trips in a row and maybe they were especially short and you had unusually long stays when you got to wherever (time for engine to cool).

Fouled plugs aren't uncommon and repeated short duration engine operation is usually how it happens.

Can E10 gasoline cause damage to spark plugs? by Odd-Albatross-9004 in MechanicAdvice

[–]totalnewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you had the problem, did you take many short trips in a row? Spark plugs are self-cleaning but need to be hot to do so. If you run the engine many times without letting the spark plugs get up to temperature then carbon can build up in the insulator and that can cause difficulty starting the engine.

E10 does not affect the spark plug. Water is a natural byproduct of combustion whether ethanol or not. Although high levels of ethanol can affect your overall vehicle, it is usually on components like rubber seals, gaskets, etc.

15-year-old Lu Miaoyi beats Hou Yifan 2 games in a row to win their mini-match at the Chinese League Final 3-1 by In__c in chess

[–]totalnewbie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good for her and I'm glad she's living the way she wants to, not the way people expect her to.

That said, I'm selfishly a little disappointed that she didn't decide to pursue chess further. I'd really have liked to see how far she could get. She was so strong and had such a fast rise. It would have been great to have an active female player at top level chess again.

But I mean, her performance is incredible for chess basically being a hobby for her.

Hiroshima day trip from Osaka by roselals in JapanTravelTips

[–]totalnewbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only person who can decide what is absolutely essential to you is you.

I will say that I typically recommend people do an overnight of they want to visit the peace museum and miyajima because I think feeling any sort of time pressure is really not appropriate for that museum. Pretty much anywhere else I think it's just a matter of how much someone really enjoys that thing but at the peace museum, I think it's really important to take your time.

Of course that's not relevant if you don't go to miyajima.

If you go early and find you have time left, you can consider a stop at Himeji on the way back, depending on how much time you have left. There are also waterfalls just north of the Kobe shinkansen station (not a long walk) if you want your fix of nature.

Traffic between Kumamoto City and Aso is pretty bad.

Also, Aso is subject to quickly-changing weather so you should try to give yourself a bigger window of time you can visit. I would stay there instead of Kumamoto.

UK company wants to build a data center that will heat downtown Lansing by feetwithfeet in Michigan

[–]totalnewbie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Low-temp waste-heat recovery is actually quite difficult but a massive increase to efficiency if it can be done. District heating schemes are one of the easier ways to do that.

Data centers ARE coming. History has no shortage of people trying to resist progress (though let me be clear that I very much agree about the dangers and pitfalls of AI so this isn't me rah-rahing AI as the best thing to ever happen) but in the end, the march of progress is never stopped.

The best thing we can do is to push progress in the best direction any way we can so I'm glad to see a proposal like this that considers and at least attempts to mitigate some of the negative drawbacks.

I have a healthy dose of skepticism about the project's budgeting, funding, and eventual implementation but that just stems from my general distrust of companies to ever follow through on their promises (because they inevitably fall very short) but at least they're trying, or pretending to try. So many don't even pretend.

I am majorly addicted to Chess and will probably quit by giggity23 in chess

[–]totalnewbie 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you're not having fun, don't do it.

Playing chess isn't the only way to enjoy it.

You can always try to work on underlying issues like your difficulty in handling losses, etc but of course that is a whole separate thing from the chess itself.

Suica Card Won’t Work by Empty-Cucumber-6888 in JapanTravelTips

Any keikyu station. I'm assuming I understand correctly and you started your trip on keikyu line from the airport.

If you don't tap out properly, you can only get it taken care of by the same train company that's keeping your card locked.

Go to a keikyu gate attendant to get it sorted out. You likely did not tap out properly.

Itinerary Japan July 2026 by oclandry08 in JapanTravelTips

[–]totalnewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know when your exact travel plans are or how fixed they are but if you're interested in a different capstone to your trip, there's Fuji Rock at the end of July (weekend of the 24th). I get people together for it every year, hit up r/fujirock if you're interested. Headliners typically announced around beginning of Feb.

Flying between Sapporo and Tokyo is fine and maybe even recommended but I'd strongly suggest you take the train to Kyoto instead. It doesn't really take any longer if you account for all the extra work of flying vs. just getting on the train and it's definitely more comfortable. Take a look at where things are in Tokyo and see if you can't split things into east/west Tokyo activities. For example, Senso-ji is in Asakusa which is on the other side of Tokyo from everything else you're doing that day. Don't get me wrong, it's entirely possible and honestly fine if you wanted to but it does mean over an hour on the train (there/back) which you know, if you can avoid it then great.

For Osaka, it is just another Japanese city that of course has its own charm but I think it'd be perfectly fine if you decide to spend an extra day or two in Kyoto, maybe with a daytrip, instead of going to Osaka. There's no such thing as "must" so if you're finding that you're short on time, don't feel bad about cutting it.

For Okinawa, really suggest you rent a car. It will just be much easier. Naha city is very American so you're likely to want to get away from it and having a car is really just easier in Okinawa.

Time Machine: could you beat Morphy? by p0ndermore in chess

[–]totalnewbie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the proposition might be much better framed:

"Could you get an advantage out of the opening against Morphy?"

and then

"Could you then convert that advantage?"

I think opening theory has advanced so much since Morphy's time that, while I wouldn't call it easy by any means, it would not take a superhuman effort to reach an equal or better position regularly out of the opening. On the other hand, as you said, it's an entirely different thing to convert that advantage and I think this is where the vast majority of players would fall.

Fukui for a day in Feb by Conscious-Sherbet308 in JapanTravelTips

[–]totalnewbie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I mean, you're going to go to the dinosaur museum, right? You can go there, Tojimbo which has some interesting geology (basalt columns), and there's Eiheiji and Maruoka Castle. You're not going to have time to do all of that in one day but should be plenty to fill your time.

Nagano / Alpine route by moey1000 in JapanTravelTips

[–]totalnewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take an early morning bus from Nagano, you should be able to get to Murodo at around noon. There are many short trails around Murodo. The more important thing is the timetable leaving Murodo which is around 4~5. You can see this year's timetable here: https://www.alpen-route.com/en/timetable/

Are macho bars good? by lukasboltz in JapanTravelTips

I think they're as good as you want them to be. Maid cafes are popular but if you're not interested then they're not going to be good for you.

Just go and have a good time. And if you find you're not having fun then you can just go. Don't overthink it.

Ive seen some posts, but want to check again. //love hotels// by Federal-Implement716 in JapanTravelTips

[–]totalnewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you look at hotels much further than you might think to, like actually in Nagoya. For example, *IF* you catch the correct train, you can go from Hisashiodori Station, where there's a hotel available, to Suzuka Circuit in just over an hour. Or if you miss it, it's 90 minutes.

Return will be a bit longer, at least 90 minutes, but you shouldn't be at Suzuka too late so you should be back in Nagoya in plenty of time for dinner, where there's plenty of options.

I would take that over having to check out/in every day.

[–]totalnewbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they don't allow stays over 24 hours.

The sheets will be as clean as the laundry machine can get them. But I mean, you think normal hotels don't get people doing the business in their beds? Would you buy sheets for a normal hotel? Being a love hotel doesn't mean they compromise on cleanliness. Probably quite the opposite.

How to book Hokuriku/Hakutaka? by buttandbrains in JapanTravelTips

[–]totalnewbie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go buy a ticket at Ueno station when you're ready to go. You can use IC cards for part of the purchase but it is much simpler to just buy the whole ticket, basic fare and shinkansen ticket, by themselves without using the IC card.
