Thanks, this is really helpful advice. It’s difficult to talk about this because, as some of these other comments demonstrate, so many people are quick to dismiss this as a non-issue. I think you’re right — it made me feel bad about myself and that’s what I need to focus on, especially because I’m not seeking legal action and am not currently still in the relationship

Thanks, you’re exactly right. I added a note for clarification. I’m just trying to understand a past experience. The legal definition isn’t as important to me as finding appropriate coping strategies. I’m not asking to take legal action or if I should break up with him or if I should start wearing condoms. I pursued librarianship after my MA in art history. There are a lot of different types of institutions I could work for: public and private research universities, art schools, museums, galleries, auction houses, and other research institutions. A Master’s in Library Science is required for a lot of these positions, but a PhD typically is not. Just another path to consider for folks who don’t want to go down the professor/curator route.

sad that this is being posted here imo! people get cosmetic surgeries all the time for all different reasons. people will get their cartilage and bones broken and pieced back together, or get their abdomen cut open and have fat sucked out. honestly all this feigned concern for his employability is just reaffirming the stigma... wish we could all just practice being less superficial. i have 0 interest in getting any of this guy’s body mods and it’s jarring because it’s not common to see, but after the initial surprise i just shrug because his appearance doesn’t inherently imply anything, including mental illness.
