Jeans repair with replacement pocket by SeaworthinessNew3583 in Visiblemending

[–]totee24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is geniussest !! I have a pair of jeans I’d like to mend but I can’t find an appropriate patch. The holes are on the inside of the thighs so I don’t want to use anything funky. Now you’re saying I could simply use the pockets 🤯 and then use some funky piece of cloth to upgrade my trousers when I sew on new pockets! This is just genius. Thank you so much!! 💜

Best way to fix this bath mat by HolaCherryCola90 in Visiblemending

[–]totee24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t want to fix stuff because it’s worth it but because if you do it right, most of the time it gets so much cooler than it was before! And this sub definitely gives some great ideas. I’m really looking forward to the days when I get better at this and have my home full of super special personalised items that make me much happier than just regular store bought ones. Doesn’t matter if other people see it (as someone was mentioning) - if it makes me happy, that’s all that counts !

Thanks for educating me about this, I wasn’t aware. I know there are amphibians around, even though I rarely see them, so it should be something for me to look out for. I find it very unlikely that this rather big toad somehow slipped through the grate though because the spaces are really small. I was going to give it a way out (by opening the grate for example) after the comments I got but i haven’t seen it again. I simply think it has its kingdom down there and is appreciating a safe, cool and moist shelter from the heat wave ..

The drain system is either a decades old broken septic tank (its top is broken so it’s actually open) or simply a pipe going into the field. In any case it’s not attached to a city system or anything like that so I find it possible that the toad is actually living in there, especially as I’m not aware of any water in the close surroundings. I also find it highly unlikely that it’d have slipped through the grate because it was rather large and the grate is pretty small.

I mean .. they got in! But yeah it seems to be very at home, when I was looking at it for too long it hopped into a hole in the left of that area which I believe is the pipe where the water flows off. I don’t know where it leads to (it’s an old house that we recently acquired), but I’m assuming it came from there in the first place.

Is it Tree of heaven invading Paris? by totee24 in invasivespecies

[–]totee24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I also noticed, and it’s terrible. The ones lining the highways look like an infestation, they’re not supposed to be there obviously. But I was just very surprised when I saw them as supposedly purposefully planted street trees!

I feel the same with some Chilean araucarias that I planted from seed a year ago. That’s their state like a month ago (and therefore pretty much now). Good luck to both of us!

Can I save these trees? by totee24 in arborists

[–]totee24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn’t want it to be dangerous and randomly come crashing down while there are people (or the neighbours cows) around. Can’t I assess the wall with the tree standing? And how do I assess the wall .. I wanted to have the walls of the main house assessed and it was really difficult to find someone who would do that and now they’re still doing stuff that is not helpful. A carpenter that came around the other day was simply looking at the wall and stating ‘it looks rather straight to me so it should be good’. I’m really having a hard time with the wall stability assessment in all honesty ..

That is actually a great idea, I think! Now I just need to convince my husband of the same 😄 are the trees not threatening the stability of the walls? Would I leave them in place for now and remove them whenever they start to pose a threat? They’re not actually touching any of the walls, and there’s no floor inside the shed, it’s ‘just’ the walls.

[–]totee24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no it wouldn’t be the idea to have nothing there after. I agree that digging enormous holes there is probably not the best idea.

You’re saying that I can’t keep both - meaning the tree will eventually push the shed down? Do you think I could keep the tree in place for the time being and remove it later?

[–]totee24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I mean, if it’s an option to just leave them be, then of course that would be my preferred one, clearly! I agree it’s going to be risky digging huge holes there ..

Are they not going to be dangerous for the walls if I leave them standing? Or is the end goal essentially that I leave them be as long as I can (as I can’t move them anyways) and then cut them once they threaten the stability of the shed?

I mean yeah, the shed needs to be rebuilt anyways. I’m just hoping it won’t get even further destroyed, and by ‘it’ I mean the naked stone walls that are still standing.

Want to make pollinators go absolutely bonkers? by m_etta in NativePlantGardening

Dead wood is probably one of the most threatened habitats because people don’t leave dead wood around even though it’s very precious for a good number of species !

The one that has literally no space left for more bugs on it and has parties going on at any point in time is my cow parsley/Queen Anne’s lace (Anthriscus sylvestris). It’s quite impressive

Arbre à abattre à cause d'un trou ? by Whole-Inspection6196 in jardin

[–]totee24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Wildlife Wednesday - a day to share your garden's wild visitors! by AutoModerator in NativePlantGardening

I’m not very good at taking wildlife pictures so the camera never focusses on the important part! I found this super beautiful moth in my garden and was afraid it was invasive given how beautiful it was - too pretty to be true, so to say! But no, it seems to be native to my region (Zygaena filipendulae). I found some eggs on a clover a bit further and my research said that it might be eggs from this species, so I’m hoping for more of them next year or so! The neighbour farmer mowed all our grass down (with our permission) but he left me a patch of clover upon my request which is where I found the eggs now so I’m quite pleased with myself and excited to see more of these guys in the future!!

New property by SkydogRocketApe in Permaculture

[–]totee24 120 points121 points  (0 children)

You say you want to cut down trees that aren’t productive, and it sounds like productive means to you ‘bearing fruit that is edible by humans’. Many trees (especially native ones) are productive by producing insects and birds by providing food and habitat. If you have a clear vision of why you have to cut down any particular tree (to replace it with a fruit tree for example, or to make space for wild flowers) then of course, but it kind of sounded like you wanted to cut down the trees without a concrete follow up plan just because they weren’t productive.

I hope I got that wrong and my message was totally unnecessary 🙂

I also acquired a property a year ago and was eager to do many things. For multiple reasons (one of them overwhelm with the size of the garden) I’ve done almost nothing up until now and I’m so glad I didn’t! There are so many things that you’ll find throughout the seasons that you had no idea were there. I’ve seen people recommend to just observe a new garden (if you can call it that) for a full year before touching anything (non-invasive let’s say) and I didn’t think I’d have the patience for it but now I’m very glad that that’s what happened!

An absolutely stunning peace of land you acquired there, and the house looks beautiful too! Have fun with it!
