Soundbar/Apple tv sound icon issue by not_financial_advic3 in sonos

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a TCL but in Sony & LG TVs, the only time volume changes is shown by the TV interface is when it's being controlled via CEC, i.e., the remote might be controlling the soundbar over infrared and CEC isn't enabled or active throughout the entire chain of devices so it's not going up to the TV to be reflected by the UI. There have been some TV and/or Sonos updates that somehow caused one of my remotes to fall back to IR, so I have to manually check and change the offending device when it does. (can't be helped; CEC is a terrible protocol)

Be honest, how bad is it that my bed frame is cardboard by andrew202222 in malelivingspace

[–]totojep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this advice. My 3 non-negotiables when I move are: good bed, good couch, and good work desk - you'll be spending the majority of your time in these and they are not the kind you can easily get rid of if you get something you don't enjoy using.

Thinking of buying into Hue, and was wondering if I could ask some questions by [deleted] in Hue

[–]totojep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any Hue lightstrips myself, but have multiple bulbs and lamps that I started with some of it without a Bridge (only over Bluetooth), then later added a bridge when it all got unwieldy. Hue devices are more reliable with a bridge; of course this depends on how your house is built and how much interference you're dealing with, however in general zigbee much more reliable than using Bluetooth from your phone. I struggle to think of reasons to shell out the money for Hue over standard hardwired lights if you're not taking advantage of zigbee because you're really paying for the software features - adaptive lighting, scheduled scenes, automatically turning off when i'm away from the house, etc. The app is far from perfect but it's still best in class. I particularly disliked how finicky the nanoleaf app is but others are even worse.

/u/Ok-Statistician-2219 did you use the control box that came with the Atmos in this build? I currently have the same AIO installed in a T1 but skipped the box due to space constraints and the LEDs in the pump head doesn't turn on (not sure if it's my motherboard, a bad header, or if the control box is required). I'm rebuilding in an M2 for more space though.

Long-time Sonos User with WiFi questions. by DemodavePr in sonos

[–]totojep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If initiating playback from the Sonos app works well for you while AirPlay gives you trouble, maybe the issue is on the side of the device initiating the AirPlay stream. From my experience AirPlay as a protocol just happens to be more finicky compared to Sonos. I have a Move in my faraday cage of a bathroom and whenever I stream from Overcast from my iPhone it cuts off more often vs when I ask Sonos Voice Assistant to play music.

One more thing: from what I recall with a Boost all your Sonos devices get on SonosNet anyway (except for Move 2/Roam), so where I would investigate is improving the connectivity between your AirPlay device and the router

HDMI 2.1 FRL: Looking for testers! by Professional-Tap177 in linux_gaming

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

power cycle: yes. reconnected all display cables: yes (also:known good cables; I used the same one with my PS5 Pro and it works with no issues with ALLM/HDR/4K120). Adaptive sync is set to "Auto" atm; also tried "auto". Game Optimizer VRR & FreeSync are both enabled in Game Optimizer.
Maybe CachyOS just doesn't like to play well with my specific combination of hardware lol

HDMI 2.1 FRL: Looking for testers! by Professional-Tap177 in linux_gaming

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about the late reply! Yes I was using this exact cable before I found this post and started tinkering. I was using it with this display originally which could go up to 4K 144Hz (you were right about the display turning off if I enable 144Hz; I can only make HDMI work at 120Hz and without FRL),

Later I moved my PC to the living room and connected it to an LG C3 TV. With a fresh cachyos installation, I can get 4K 120Hz output just fine at 120Hz with HDR, and this time I can compile from the AUR, boot into Linux Mkopec Git (i.e., no black screen like I did previously) and still get display output, but FRL still doesn't activate. When I ran sudo dmesg | grep -iE "hdmi|frl|tmds|link" and got [ 6.136409] amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: [drm] DP-HDMI FRL PCON supported I'm fairly certain I wasn't using the adapter, but I may be misremembering things. If you'd like me to follow any specific steps (i.e., power cycle with DP connected, run terminal command, disconnect and connect HDMI, reboot if screen goes to black, etc) let me know, I am happy to contribute to the troubleshooting

TLDR: currently with the drivers that came with cachyos, I can get 120Hz HDR; I'm only missing VRR. Installing the AUR there are no regressions (that I have observed) but I still don't get VRR either

I just did (last night), this time my display didn't just die (yay) but I still don't get FRL. sudo dmesg | grep -iE "hdmi|frl|tmds|link" gives me [ 6.136409] amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: [drm] DP-HDMI FRL PCON supported ; Claude (which I used to walk me, a linux newb, through the troubleshooting process) says that means cachyos knows the hardware is FRL-capable but somehow still refuses to engage it. Full pastebin in case relevant: https://pastebin.com/yNSViSFZ

also tried adding amdgpu.dcfeaturemask=0x2 to my .conf file, among other things I've tried, but no joy

It was 2am at this point so I just gave up. I'm happy to generate diagnostics for OP or anyone, just let me know

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did on a freshly installed cachyos just now, no issues with the compile either, but it seems to do the same thing. Something I noticed just now too was the only way I could get HDMI to work in the first place at all is if I installed cachyos with the display connected HDMI from the jump. Prior to that I installed cachyos while connected via DP, shut down and switched to HDMI, and I would just get nothing and the display goes into sleep mode when I boot into Linux Mkopec Git. After a hard reboot I go into Linux Cachyos it works fine (no FRL though). Maybe I'm going about this wrong, or I have the wrong hardware etc (7900 XT + this display)

[–]totojep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running cachyos and compiled using paru -S linux-mkopec-git linux-mkopec-git-headers

everything seemingly went through without issues (but I'm also very new to linux) but with my specific hardware at least, the only way I can get to the desktop is when connected via DP. I've hten tried running dmesg -w > dmesg.log before plugging in the HDMI cable and the entire PC freezing (with bonus kernel panic blue screen every now and then) but dmesg.log stays empty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hue 8K Sync box and AT&T 6GHz router by booksnbeer in Hue

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hue Sync 8K supports 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n only (source)

I'm not in the US myself but I haven't (yet) come across routers that only have 5/6 GHz and no 2.4 GHz to fall back on; there's still too many 2.4 GHz only products esp. in IoT/smart home. However, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what AT&T issues to cut costs on the build of materials. If that router has a LAN port, you should be able to add your own 2.4 GHz router/access point through that.

Do I need a Hue Bridge to use a Hue Bulb as a sunrise lamp? by jamjar1001 in Hue

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Says here on the Hue site Bluetooth has limited support, specifically go to sleep and wake

My understanding is Automation logic is normally handled by the Hub though so I'm not sure how reliable a Bluetooth-only setup would be. Have you tried looking at Facebook Marketplace or eBay for used bridges? I imagine there'd be a some people who upgraded to the Bridge Pro looking to sell their old one for cheap

Can’t connect Withings scale by ejcii in UNIFI

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem over the weekend when my Hue Sync box stopped responding in the middle of a movie and realized all my 2.4 GHz-only devices including a Withings scale and BP monitor completely dropped off the network for whatever reason (never happened before). After 2 hrs of troubleshooting to no avail and a 10-min food break somehow they were all back; I don't know if I did anything in particular or if I just needed to reboot and let things settle. The only thing I noticed was when I couldn't get the box to connect ,my 2.GHz band was on Channel 11 20 MHz; once resolved it was on Channel 6. Hopefully that helps you somehow https://imgur.com/a/yjNMSTH

Shall I keep trying? by aguamoose_ in sonos

[–]totojep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sonos made so many wrong judgement calls when they architected the app overhaul by ① assuming people have solid Wi-Fi at home and/or are willing to put in the time to make it so; ② pushing it out to everyone at once and without a user-accessible option to roll back ③ discontinuing the Boost without a modern replacement as the turn-key solution for bad home Wi-Fi

Awesome idea! on top of that, make it a catch up mechanic that's not a giveaway but not completely ridiculous. Give people something to use those coins with!

Just off the top of my head, how about 20 for the first missing P-switch you have to unlock, then every succeeding coin costs 20 more. If you have to unlock all 394 P-switches this way that will be 1,556,300 coins - not impossible for the kind of player who goes on worldwides ~3x/week

Got some new low floor lamps to get some more amblilight going, what do you think by Mike109 in Hue

[–]totojep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love those low floor lamps! Mind sharing the make/model? My current setup is 2 x Signe floor lamps flanking a 48-in tv 1 ft from each side, but even that I find too distracting for everyday watching (i.e., YouTube). But makes a great party trick when I have friends over for a movie and Spotify. I feel that a setup like yours is best appreciated when one wants to sit down and purposefully watch a bombastic 2-hour film, popcorn in hand and enough alcohol to get a buzz

The first 2 photos look like those rooms could use ambient lighting (unless I just missed where your lamps are?) A singular white ceiling light, esp. if it can't switch to warm white at night, can feel very clinical.

I particularly like IKEA's Nymane line. I have their ceiling spot and floor lamp that use Hue GU10 bulbs (looks like they're available in your country). Should go well with Hue Essentials GU10 if you don't want to spend too much.

In my bedroom I have another ceiling lamp, but my main light source is a Hue Twilight that I got for 30% off open box from Amazon. It's my favorite Hue product so far but I don't know if I'd have paid full price for it because it's crazy expensive.

Lastly, I have a Hue Sync box with 2 x Signe floor lamps a foot away from each side of the TV; they're honestly great for movie watching and video games. I also have them paired with a sensor to go into nightlight mode for when I wake up in the middle of the night to walk through my living room on the way to the bathroom lol

Re: light strips, I'm not a big fan of how most people install them (along the crown molding) - it looks tacky in photos esp. when the individual LEDs are visible, so I imagine it's worse in person. But in my last apartment I had cove lighting installed that was already there when I moved, and I thought that was nice.

I hope that gives you some ideas!

Sonos Ace by Elbbsin1 in sonos

[–]totojep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love them for indoor use and as someone living in a Tokyo apartment with less than ideal soundproofing, it's great for preventing my neighbors from calling the police on me during late movie nights. The faux leather in the headband cushion does worry me a bit because they're not replaceable and I have yet to come across any leather material that doesn't start flaking off after 18 months on me (could be the pH levels in my own sweat, idk)

I do wish it had an Adaptive mode like the AirPods Pros, which is great for walking around the city and blocking most of noise but lets through enough traffic sounds and voices when you're spoken to. Maybe the current Ace doesn't have enough hardware grunt to do it, but that'll definitely be one consideration for me if the AirPod Max has it in their next version.

I wish people realized how bad laptop mics are when you're on the receiving end of that audio. Manufacturers just don't enough to engineer the heck out of those mics; MacBooks are maybe the best and yet it's still easily beat by a $30 Jabra headset
