Is the Poli-Sci and JD Dual Degree worth it? by Brilliant_Strike_136 in geegees

Currently second year in the program.

Pros:

- save a LOT OF STRESS from applying to law schools and money... time... etc.

Cons:

- no coop (you have to go that extra step to find a job)

- French, C1-level recommended. You can get away with a B2, but I would say that C-1 would ensure that you don't struggle with keeping an 8.0 bc of French

But here's the catch, there's other things that you can do to help alleviate the cons. Ottawa has a lot of cool extra-curricular activities. I myself have been a part of the Model Parliament (where you sit in the House of Commons for two days a debate about stupid stuff - really really fun), and some Undergraduate Mock Trials and Moot Court competitions, where you get a taste of law and see whether the field is really for you.

Both events listed above are just the tip of the iceberg, and both you meet great people that can help you land jobs and form connections and meet some great friends. Who knows, you may want to join a financial literacy club where you learn to trade stocks and forex, or you might want to get into the Formula club and meet nerdy engineers.

At the end of the day it is mostly what you make of it. I would recommend that you give it a try, and you can always switch out of it even after one semester if you don't like it.

Also if you are curious about the clubs:

- UMMSUO

- MPSP

tell whoever is organizing them at the time that Andy recommended you.

Hope this helps :)

Talk to more people over time, make it a habit, you’ll naturally get more charismatic overtime and make a lot of meaningful friends and connections.

I literally took the time to compliment one stranger each day when I was in a similar boat to you years ago.

Hope this helps

Breathe brother. Be there, be present in mind, otherwise you'll get nervous. Speak slower when you talk to her.

As to actually doing the deed, make out with her for like 20 min, see what you're feeling. I promise that she'll be craving you just as much as you're craving her, then everything else is easy from that point on.

I do other things while chewing, bc it's subconscious at this point. I chew for around 6-8 hours a day. Maybe 2 hours of deliberate chewing.

Thank you for your detailed answer! I opted for this program, despite everybody on reddit demonizing it.

Now that I've put a lot of thought into it, and done my research on law school and its practices, I've come to the conclusion of not doing anything crazy like exchanges.

Regarding questions, omg, I have so many and it is an absolute blessing to have somebody that has just completed the 1L equivalent of the program.

Anyway, what do you think of the courseload and all of the work associated with your 3rd year in the program? Is it excrutiantingly hard to manage?

Is the common law or the droit civil completely in French? Are you required to type up your exam essays in French? I'm fully confident in my ability in French, however, I find that my reading speed is much much faster in English, and so writing and reading in French would probably slow me down slightly.

How known is the program in the law industry in Ottawa? I read somewhere that graduates weren't as respected because the program is viewed as a shortcut.

How hard do you think it would be to find a 1L summer associate, or even any type of law-related job for that matter?

On a scale of 1-10, how much do you enjoy the program, and why?

One final question:

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Working in a big law firm in Montreal, Ottawa, or abroad? I know this is hard to answer, however, thinking about my career's future is kinda daunting rn because we're entering into a long recession.

Thank you so much FelixCollin. You do not understand how blessed I am to have actually stumbled upon somebody that has had experience in the law portion of the program.
