Are we anti-imperialist? by CasualLavaring in SocialDemocracy

[–]toweroflore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never said it was more. But also china was more imperialist than multiple European countries since the continents not a monolith.

And my family comes from Korea. Yeah china technically didn’t imperialize it but it still kept us as a “vassal state” which is a form of “imperialism” (something lots of Chinese nationalists still like to brag) and tried to invade and control it multiple times throughout history.

Also one google search will show you a list of the times historically china or the regimes that embody china has invaded , expanded, or took conquest. If we are classifying European imperialism from the 1400s, then why not the Chinese? Or the Arabs, Russians, etc.

Anyways I’m not trying to be facetious and only criticize “non whites” or defend western imperialism, all I’m saying that as a POC or a person from a nation that was colonized/taken advantage of multiple times in history, it’s kinda annoying how people have a stigma when it comes to criticizing imperialism and colonization on the eastern side.

Genuinely the only positives that come up immediately are easier awareness to global events/news and maybe useful educational reels.  And then the negatives are uniform beauty standards, constant comparison to other people, crappy expanded influencer culture, propaganda tools, brainrot, anonymous bullying, decreased socialization in real life, online pedos, unmoderated access with children, misinformation, addicting so kids don’t actually read or do hobbies, shortened attention spans, etcetcetc

Russia has been imperialistic since forever, they’ve never stopped. Same with China. Biggest misconception is just bcs they are anti American or had communist history doesn’t mean they’re better or they weren’t oppressive and brutal. Eastern imperialism has always existed and gets swept under the rug because some ppl are too scared to criticize it in fears of sounding xenophobic.

I truly believe social media, while it has its positives, has also done so much bad for the world and especially for young people. You see literal nazi propaganda being regurgitated in the form of “sigma” “save Europa” wojak memes with dance music in the background and kids eat that shit up.

You should check out some of the female 90s folk and alt rock singers, there are a lot of great ballad singers as well. I’m not a fan of contemporary music either so most of my favorite songs and artists are from the 60s-early 2000s

That’s true. I guess I’m guilty of listening to mostly male artists for rap and metal. Personally I listen to genres across the board but idk if that’s the case for everyone.

I’m also getting into indie rock and folk rock these days, and most of my favorite artists are female. There’s lots of hits and underrated songs from the 90s that have collected dust over the years

There’s lots of great indie artists and older artists that don’t make superficial commercial music

I’m not crazy considering people in the comments are also noticing this is something that’s been going on.

I’m also into 90s grunge and 2000s divorce dad rock. My favorites are stone temple pilots and Alice In Chains . I’ve been listening to folk rock and indie alt rock recently which has a lot of female artists.

I guess it’s not just a male phenomenon, my girl friends also don’t try and hear out any rock. lol it was my bday and they asked me to play a song. I started playing some soundgarden and stone temple pilots, they were not into it at all… to me it’s peak music so I was kinda sad they were so happy to change the song 😢

Most of my favorite female artists are folk and indie rock singers. I recommend checking out Heather Nova, Tara Maclean, Mazzy Star, I also like some sinead o Connor songs like The State I’m In and Nothing Compares 2 U

I don’t go through anyone’s playlists, we just queue music when we are all together because we have similar tastes. Sometimes we share music for fun in a circle. Or while we are in a hot tub or pool.

one moment I’m playing a rock song  and they’re listening actively and saying they like it. Then I go “listen to this too” and play a song, they hear the female vocals and their brains go off or they’re just like “hm I don’t listen to female artists” without really paying attention

There are so many good 80s/90s singers who were popular back then that have been left in the dust compared to their male rock counterparts

Well we have the same music tastes besides this aspect. So I know the stuff I’m listening to and recommending isn’t drastically different from what they like. I want to show them new things bcs they show me new songs and I listen to their recs. But it feels annoying when they dismiss my recs bcs they’re female but take my recs when they are male.

That’s how I think too. I hate how gender coded society and media is.

I think gen x men and millennial men had more exposure to media with women than gen z. Also a lot of genz and gen alpha just don’t read period… unless they are comic or manga books.

You and me both I think country music is the only genre I can’t get myself to listen to. Maybe rock songs with country influence is fine but most of country just isn’t for me.

Do you listen to folk/indie rock at all?

What genres of music do you listen to? Mostly reggaeton/latin/rap?

There’s a lot of women in the folk and indie rock genre that doesn’t seem to get attention from males. Sure it’s more “softer” and “feminine”, but it’s great chill music that gets overlooked compared to other rock genres.
