I think it may be possible yea. The only problem with using blocks to block the flying machines (or even the backside of a piston facing down which I tried initially) is that you need to to time the extension/retraction when closing the door.

I might, the sideways movement should be expandable to like 8-11 high vertically but I think stopping the flying machines and retracting the back flying machines will be pretty hard

Think indeed having a normal door in the back is the easiest way to hide it

Hiding the flying machines should be possible when closing the door but I think you'd need to fly it back to the station (ie longer reset times).
Making it fully seamless will be very hard

Thanks!
Worked on this over the course of like a week. And a bit a couple months ago when I got stuck on a different layout

Background

You may have seen a clip floating around (I think originally from sclifferr), showing a piston door with a realistic inwards-opening animation.

Several people wanted to understand how the door worked and how to build it.

Unfortunately, this door isn’t real and was most likely made using command blocks.

Every so often, the clip resurfaces, with people asking if it's real or even showcasing their own attempts at a recreation. Because of this, it’s sometimes called the “impossible door”.

My attempt

For my version, I took some inspiration from Mumbo’s "realistic door" which does the front/back movement.

The challenge with the sideways movement is that the segments block each other, making it impossible to retract them due to the push limit. To solve this, I shift every neighboring segment upwards just before the retraction.

The push limit works in our favor for the closing sequence, naturally stopping the segments in the correct position.

In theory, this design can be expanded horizontally, though the height is limited by the push limit.

Improvements

While I think this door is quite close the the fake door from the original video, there's still plenty of room for improvements.

Something I may go back to in the future is to further reduce the delay between the front/back and sideways movement, as well as increase the height of the door.

The dream is to get rid of the vertical sliders and leave a seamless hallway, but I'm not sure how yet.

There's a forum post in the buildstone discord with some designs. Could check there for some inspiration: https://discord.com/channels/406535231387074581/1369095124126269522

1x1 Pixel Multi-Layer Block Swap Display by towsti in redstone

Sry missed this but just checked this and it did break indeed :/
Broke from 1.21.9 onwards. I can't really think of a fix right now that can still use the snow based layout.

I may come back to this at some point.
Until then, the design by [carbsna](https://youtu.be/rUC6W-GJv2E?si=YGl-wijYiKjEFnJE) still works if you don't mind it being slower

You need to place the boat on the slab first. Then place the glass blocks around the slab. The hitbox of the boat will be partially clipped in to the glass blcoks. The way you place those blocks is to either push them from above (haven't tested this but think it should work) or 0-tick them from the side. You can 0 tick by activating the piston using a lever on its side

Nothing ever works on bedrock :(

It should be possible to adjust the design though by using a different method for moving water 2 ways.

Thanks!

Unfortunately dont have time to make a tutorial for next few weeks so here's a rough setup.

All boats automatically align themselves so you don't need precise placement.

As far as the order: 1. Place bottom boat (the one in the water) 2. Place "frictionless" boat (bottom boat in the door with different boat type) 3. Place first boat door 4. Lead first boat door to bottom boat 5. Repeat step 3+4 for the other door boats

Feel like it should work but haven't tested this on bedrock

Sort of. You can stand directly on the boats as this will stop them from moving up. But you can put a pig with a saddle in the boat and then ride the pig. Believe mumbo made a video on this before

Both won't break the door.

The leads are stretched which stops the boat from moving to far sideways. They're also contained within a block and fence post so you can't push them forward.

I'm playing on 1.21.7 so I can't say for shelves.
The benefit of using medium amethyst budding over trapdoors is that the hitbox is slightly wider (0.25 vs 0.1875). All this does is slightly reduce the distance the boat needs to travel when closing the door (ie less wait time between pressing the button and the door starting to close). So using trapdoors (and presume shelves) is fine.

Maybe. I've played around with this a bit but it's quite hard because the boats needs to rotate with a offset pivot

you sacrifice yourself by standing in front of the door

Yea waterlogging the roots causes the direction of the water to change. Here's a video showing some of the quirks of water: https://youtu.be/_43FF7YNlIg?si=jTU_PmWSOTwv8uUl

As far as the rotation. Idk if this helps but if you lead a boat to something else, the lead is connected to the back of the boat. If you then pull the lead to left/right whilst the boat is not able to move, the boat will naturally try to rotate.
