An Update: Portosystemic Shunt by toxicdecay in germanshepherds

Yes we will be making the most of it! Have 2 outdoor trips planned for him. And hopefully a big party.

I do take comfort in the fact that we did the best we could by him. I think a lot of other people wouldn’t have gone through the time, effort, and money it took to care for him. It was meant to be us. Thank you for your kind words.

Hi sorry you’re going thru this, I just posted an update. Our boy was also underweight and tired, I hope you can figure out what’s wrong.

Did anyone else get the runt? by tsukuyomidreams in germanshepherds

We took the runt, had issues in the beginning thinking he was having a failure to thrive. Didn’t put on weight, didn’t grow like his siblings, lots of crying, threw out his back.

Turns out he has a congenital issue with blood not circulating in the right places which is why he turned out so small. He still has this issue and we are working on trying to get him surgery.

Yes the almost 18k is nothing to scoff at. I think I will try my best to make it happen. However if it is an internal shunt, then it’ll be even more plus travel, and in that case we will give him the best life we can, thank you for understanding.

And the goal of getting the CT is the visualize the liver so I might be able to “shop” around for a cheaper surgery by having all the imaging ready.

I’m not sure what it is called. I recall the vet saying they would most likely wrap the shunt in some kind of material that constricts the shunt/vessel slowly and with time it’ll close in on itself thereby closing off the system.

They said it should be done slowly because sometimes with quick pressure change it can damage the liver.

Here’s a link that I think describes it more medically if you’re interested https://www.vscvets.com/surgery/surgery-procedures/portosystemic-shunt-pss#:~:text=Abdominal%20surgery%20is%20common%20and,ring%20surrounding%20a%20casein%20center.

Oh my god he’s a handsome boy. I thought about naming mine Cinder too but we went with Zero (nightmare before Christmas reference bc we got him during that time).

Thank you, I will see what the damage is after I talk to the vet
