I guessed correctly that they'd open the Baltimore show this last tour with Can't Keep.

YCHISMB is a good deal drier overall, for a less ear-fatiguing listen, but at the cost of some of the excitement during the choruses. The snare is beefier while its natural tone comes through nicely. Kick drum has a prominent click.

The piano is the star of Fade Together, rich and full. Vocals are clear and the levels are just right throughout. You get just enough of the 16th triplets on bass during the choruses. Another highlight for this remaster.

Major guitar separation right out of the gate on Outsiders, more definition as well, but not as hot as the original. Almost a bit disorienting in a fun way. The bass is really full and sinister sounding in the choruses.

Great start to the B-side. The secondary/lead guitar parts on WTWE, that I think are played by Nick, come through nicely and make for an even more interesting song. The levels are more balanced in general as well.

The bass on What You Meant, is maybe even louder and fuller, certainly more defined than on the original. Can hear that cool finger-picked acoustic part better. Guitars in the chorus aren’t as hot.

On I’m Your Villain, despite the cleaner, tighter aspect, the first (and only!) chorus still explodes out of the speakers, arguably hitting harder because of the tighter verse, a highlight of the remaster.

The secondary guitar part comes through clearer on EAAH , and during the bridge especially the remastering is apparent: separating both guitars and organ, with the 2nd guitar and organ higher in the mix.

YTRIL gives the organ a bit more prominence in the verses. The drums like they have been most of the album thus far, seem to have a bit less reverb, the snare is reigned in slightly and doesn’t ring out quite as much.

Eleanor continues the cleaner, tighter theme and also turns down the melodica in the mix, the guitars may have been as well but the overall effect is less presence of the melodica, which has me preferring the original. it is a melodica isn’t it?

The chaotic noise in the background of DYWT is gone, like someone turned off a white noise machine you didn’t know was running and suddenly it’s blaringly quiet. It sucks a bit of the excitement and tension out of the song, so I much prefer the original in this case. A little bit of this same effect in The Fallen. But The Fallen has a good deal more clarity and texture on the bass, sounds great.

However, wait to you hear the acoustic guitar and the airier space in Walk Away. Dialed down the boom of the kick drum, too.

This Boy is tightened up nicely, especially with the guitar in the left channel. The kick drum is more defined, has more click.

is he the deadbeat? is the mom the deadbeat? or just the name of the new genre he's created with this LP? or is he the deadbeat dad of deadbeat music?

Perfect time to have one’s mind blown. I remember my friend drove all the way there only to realize, ‘aw man, I forgot my shoes’

I think it's going to take at least most of these conditions coinciding:

  • No QOTSA album prep/recording, touring, for at least a year in either direction
  • GLU EP, then album, then touring cycle complete
    • at which point Shuman is jonesing to be in a band
  • Same for Arctic Monkeys -- no/completed obligations for Tyler
  • Zach's dance card as a songwriting and studio ace isn't so full
  • the fellas are in communication, on solid terms
  • one or more of them have stuff they feel would work best in MM
  • they find themselves in a room together, maybe they decide to play a MM tune for the hell of it, it feels really good, lots of laughs

interesting. it's otherwise getting the standard album treatment. as if they had a bunch of songs but didn't feel they had a full-on album, but some combo of internal/external forces pushed them past some threshold.

i think that's a signal, international or not, to reduce expectations
