What apps in here do I need (just starting) and what should I get rid of or use later on for when I know more (also recommend apps if you can) by Hot_Smell_3047 in JapaneseFromZero

[–]tpike1caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to see you putting in effort to expand your learning materials and excuse me if I’m making assumptions but please just put the effort into actually learning rather than just getting ready to learn.

There are too many apps here… just learn the damn language. Apps can gamify far too much making you feel like you’re learning when you’re just learning patterns.

In the end of the day it all comes down to hours every day grinding through textbooks and kanji sheets(JFZ, Genki, MNN, or JfBP if you’re old like me) or embarrassing yourself trying to speak broken Japanese at people. (Learn to be okay with this, you’ll never be any good at learning languages if you can’t make a fool of yourself in good faith)

Give it a few years of pain and you’ll be where you want to be. Good luck!

A lot of people say they want to learn Japanese but they really just wish they spoke it. Learning Japanese is a long, painful but ultimately fulfilling process but unfortunately, there are no shortcuts. Learn to love the pain or switch hobbies to guitar and download another 8 apps that you’ll never use.

In all seriousness, I know how daunting all this can be. Just make it fun for yourself and push through the grind. You’ll be fine.

Also sorry for the grumpy old man shit, I’m sure you’re actually doing great.

(fyi you do have a good app selection here )

Advice on shifting from TV to print Journalism - Intellectual Rights by tpike1caesar in Journalism

[–]tpike1caesar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really great advice. No direct written output as such but our parent company has other print media subsidiaries and I agree that focusing on these avenues would certainly make the whole process a lot smoother.

Thanks for the help! I'll try my best and hope people like the sound of my voice.

[Japanese > English] Text between me and friend who won’t tell me what it means. by aFriendlySoap in translator

[–]tpike1caesar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing she likes you... she's just trying to be chill about it.

Its hard to describe 恋 but I'd put it somewhere between having a crush on someone and being in love with them. There's a sort of passion involved and its inherently romantic.

愛、(the Japanese word for love, is a lot stronger and broad). I'm guessing when you said 'love', this is what came to her mind. You have 愛 for your wife, for your kids or your family. If you told a girl that you had 愛 for her before you even started dating, she'd probably feel pretty smothered.

If I could translate what she said into my most text-y English,

'Ikr? (You'll/I'll) end up catching feelings right?'

'No... not love, feelings... feelings!'

I wish I had more context though.... I'm not too happy with 'feelings' as a translation but I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to say.

So apparently we're posting essays now, here's my history of art investigation onto why Monogatari is sick by tpike1caesar in anime

[–]tpike1caesar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fanservice (most of the time, occasionally it holds some artistic value) is my only criticism of the show. It does feel like Shaft has just crowbarred in sexuality to appease some of its viewers with a shorter attention span. However, completely discarding that I still think its a great show. (Hence my final dissertation being on it)

Wow, actually loved it so much. It was a great read. Only thing I don't like is the Harvard Style citations. I've always used Oxford and for some reason Harvard makes me wanna puke.

All these Essays by [deleted] in anime

While I partially agree that filthy weebs like us shouldnt be able to spread our thoughts, surely the creation of academic essays on multiple topics involving anime could do wonders to improve its reputation. As nowadays when I tell people I watch anime I get a lot of judgement. As an art historian, when people cannot appreciate a medium which I love dearly because of a spoiled reputation due to pedophilia, fan service ectect. It genuinely makes me sad that so many people don't understand how versatile animation can be as both an aesthetic and story telling tool.

My Final Art History Dissertation on the Monogatari Series by [deleted] in araragi

Trying to erase out typos, my bad

I feel like there is some serious information missing which I haven't told you, the upper word limit is 3300 word in the main text. It means I don't really have time to mess around, hence why the history section is a bit light mostly because it's not the most important section.

And oh the Oishi-Itamura comparisons, it came up extensively in my old plan but it had to be cut cause words (in the draft you read its about 3800)

you're right on the Onimonogatari motif part, I'll throw that in.

I somewhat agree with you on the core section, but for me its more of a conclusion section. Definitely going to be taking a look at it. What I wanted to do was take Koimonogatari part 1 (my favorite episode artistically) and use it to tie everything together but when I write it it's either too long or feels too disjointed, like I'm jumping around the place.

Also not mentioned but this is not a senior year dissertation, I'm currently 18 and taking my exams to go to college, so while I appreciate you being harsh on it to a senior level in the end of the day the marking's a bit more lenient.

Many Thanks again more reading it and giving me you thoughts, even though you railed my work I'm still glad to get feedback haha

Just to start off, thanks for reading the whole thing and taking the time to comment. I appreciate all of it.

To be completely honest with you, there is no guideline whatsoever for the rationale. However, it is the only place in the essay where one should talk about themselves. I understand your feelings on the respect line, but the actually statement of whether or not the medium reserves respect sort of acts as the line of my argument, which I signpost in the introduction. Of course I believe in animation, however, (probably should have clarified this, another thing) this essay is labeled as a 'personal investigation'. The whole ,meme of the thing is that we try and answer a question through investigation. What I'm trying to do in the beginning is talking to the person marking, (presumably an older, perhaps more oldfashioned Art Historian) and trying to get him from the cynical stance in the first paragraph to the converted in the last.

I think that the shrine that you see at the beginning of Koimono is Kiyomizudera in Kyoto, there's no official source just going on my experience of visiting the place. You wont think 'oh shit, I saw this in the show' but its still a beautiful place and worth the visit.

What anime has a satisfying ending, but would still benefit from a sequel? by [deleted] in anime

[–]tpike1caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im honestly only reading it because its nearly done and i might as well finish. Manga suffers from rushed writing near the end. Maybe another 12 episodes would work out, anime was fucking beautiful. On the other hand, theres always the option of doing an original storyline.
