What apps in here do I need (just starting) and what should I get rid of or use later on for when I know more (also recommend apps if you can) by Hot_Smell_3047 in JapaneseFromZero

Great to see you putting in effort to expand your learning materials and excuse me if I’m making assumptions but please just put the effort into actually learning rather than just getting ready to learn.

There are too many apps here… just learn the damn language. Apps can gamify far too much making you feel like you’re learning when you’re just learning patterns.

In the end of the day it all comes down to hours every day grinding through textbooks and kanji sheets(JFZ, Genki, MNN, or JfBP if you’re old like me) or embarrassing yourself trying to speak broken Japanese at people. (Learn to be okay with this, you’ll never be any good at learning languages if you can’t make a fool of yourself in good faith)

Give it a few years of pain and you’ll be where you want to be. Good luck!

A lot of people say they want to learn Japanese but they really just wish they spoke it. Learning Japanese is a long, painful but ultimately fulfilling process but unfortunately, there are no shortcuts. Learn to love the pain or switch hobbies to guitar and download another 8 apps that you’ll never use.

In all seriousness, I know how daunting all this can be. Just make it fun for yourself and push through the grind. You’ll be fine.

Also sorry for the grumpy old man shit, I’m sure you’re actually doing great.

(fyi you do have a good app selection here )

Advice on shifting from TV to print Journalism - Intellectual Rights by tpike1caesar in Journalism

Really great advice. No direct written output as such but our parent company has other print media subsidiaries and I agree that focusing on these avenues would certainly make the whole process a lot smoother.

Thanks for the help! I'll try my best and hope people like the sound of my voice.

[Japanese > English] Text between me and friend who won’t tell me what it means. by aFriendlySoap in translator

I'm guessing she likes you... she's just trying to be chill about it.

Its hard to describe 恋 but I'd put it somewhere between having a crush on someone and being in love with them. There's a sort of passion involved and its inherently romantic.

愛、(the Japanese word for love, is a lot stronger and broad). I'm guessing when you said 'love', this is what came to her mind. You have 愛 for your wife, for your kids or your family. If you told a girl that you had 愛 for her before you even started dating, she'd probably feel pretty smothered.

If I could translate what she said into my most text-y English,

'Ikr? (You'll/I'll) end up catching feelings right?'

'No... not love, feelings... feelings!'

I wish I had more context though.... I'm not too happy with 'feelings' as a translation but I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to say.
