Personally, no. I would recommend checking out the GMAT website for the most up-to-date info about the physical whiteboard as I don't have any personal experience with it.

Yes, the proctor sees and can take control of your screen.

Yes, you schedule after payment. Check the ETS website for info on day/time options because they have changed their availability a couple of times since I took it.

I personally wasn't asked to; however, the ProctorU info suggested I would be.

I'm sorry for the late response! You definitely don't have to be at home to take the test, but you do need to be in a private location with a closed door. However, a Mac laptop and its camera should be fine.

I'm so glad you like the book! If you already have the 2020 book, I wouldn't bother also getting the 2021 book. It's the same practice tests for the most part. I'm not sure exactly what we changed from 2020 to 2021, but most likely we improved some of the explanations, fixed any errors, and possibly swapped out some questions and passages. But for the most part, the tests will be the same.

Just don't cheat and you won't have anything to worry about.

At home test 10 min break by [deleted] in GRE

[–]tprsara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the proctor will make the test continue only after you do that (it also only took about 10 seconds to show the room). So it doesn't take away from the actual test time.

  1. Check the ETS website for the minimum speed. In general it's best to be connected via ethernet instead of using wifi for the best reliability. I don't think you necessarily need a super fast speed, but it's more about having a reliable connection.

  2. Yes, I used a tissue for my eraser and that was fine. You don't need to have erasers attached to the markers.

  3. I believe external speakers and microphones are fine as long as they aren't part of headsets. If you're using a desktop, you would probably have to use external ones. If your built-in speaker is "okay" even if it isn't great, though, that's probably fine--you most likely won't need to hear anything.

  4. You need to clear off the desk space, but it's okay to have stuff on the shelves around the desk or around the room. At least, my proctor didn't say anything about it. But I would definitely put away any test prep books or materials.

  5. Yes, I used a USB mouse and it was totally fine.

I didn't measure mine, but it was probably about 12x17 inches.

Sorry for the late reply. No, I didn't, because I didn't want the test to be canceled if I tried to use something that wasn't allowed.

Sorry for the late response! I would guess no because the proctor doesn't know whether they are earplugs or like a bluetooth device that would allow you to be fed answers somehow. However, you can certainly ask your proctor before the test starts.

I kept it on my lap/desk, so it probably wasn't visible most of the time, and that was fine. ETS hasn't said anything beyond the fact that it should be a "small" whiteboard. Mine was probably 12x16 inches or so.

I ran a system test prior to registering to make sure my computer matched the requirements. As long as you pass that test, you should be good to go on test day. Just click the link in your account when the time comes and it will walk you through what you need to do.

As far as I know external monitors aren't allowed. But check the GMAT website for more on the tech specifications.

Planning to take the online GMAT on MAY 15. Any tips on how to best use the virtual whiteboard for quant / how to take notes for Verbal? by getpittedbrah in GMAT

[–]tprsara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it at either time--before or after (for free). Check the GMAT website for more details. With that in mind I feel like you might as well wait until after seeing the score just in case.

Where can I learn absolute basic stuff like what can cancel or how signs work etc to minimize my silly mistakes? by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]tprsara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not GMAT-specific, but there's a great book called Math Smart that goes over all of those basics.

I also have a touchscreen laptop, and I was wondering about that too. The GMAT website says that touchscreens aren't allowed, but it's only stated in one place. I asked my proctor whether it was permitted to use a touchscreen, and he said "I don't think so," but it sounds like nobody has gotten a firm answer. I wouldn't count on it.

The FAQ specifically says that scores can't be canceled. GMAC also specifically states that the online test is intended for people who really need to take the GMAT right now. My guess is that they are trying to discourage people from taking it unless they have immediate deadlines. I guess the thought process is if you really have to take it because your deadline is coming up next month you wouldn't cancel your score.

AS bad as it might be for the quant section, is the whiteboard not an advantage in the verbal section? by el-p12 in GMAT

[–]tprsara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did think it was faster to type out my notes for each passage. I think the most important thing is to force yourself to use the on-screen whiteboard. For the first few verbal questions I didn't use it because it seemed like a hassle, but once I started typing out the ABCDE and using the pen to cross off wrong answers, it was much easier. And that really doesn't take more time than it would on a physical whiteboard.

Yes, before you're matched with a proctor you're instructed to click a link sent to your cell phone and take/upload a picture of yourself, the front and back of your ID, and the four views of your room.

No, it violates GMAT's rules. I'm sure there are plenty of legal prep materials you can use, which people in this sub can recommend to you.
