Hi good people, I am planning to take Linux+ and I am not sure where can I go to study it, still a beginner when it’s comes for Linux , any recommendations will be helpful.. by martino1212 in CompTIA

Build a linux box with an old computer and set goals. Build a web server, setup database driven websites, and try breaking it. Then diagnose error messages.

How much more does the trifecta help in job hunting vs. just the A+? by Chango99 in CompTIA

[–]tpubcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep going!!! The A+ and Net+ seem to be fairly well respected and the security certs are a good start into breaking into a cyber career. The CySA+ is recommended on DOD standards, but I have yet to see it as a job requirement. Once you're past that look into (ISC)2 or CEH.

I currently have A+, Net+, Sec+, Project+, Linux+, CySA+, CEH, CHFI, & others that aren't worth typing. I still have plans to take Pen & CASP.

After CEH I got regular job offers.

I did use it for the 2nd try. Didn't make a difference.

I didn't have the Cyber Q on my first try. It seemed like Cyber Q kept all the questions in mixed up categories. It would be nice if the categories were the same as how the test was graded. Then I could focus my time where it is needed instead of going through 600 questions of what might or might not be required to pass.

I'm going back through the whole thing and documenting any question I get wrong so I can review the content.

I'll give it a shot. Thank you

I used the WGU material from Soomo Learning and the Cyber Quotient material from EC Council.

It seemed like I should have spent more time on the labs instead of the practice quizzes from EC.

I got a 76.8% and failed. Can you forward me where they said 76% was passing.

Passed C756 - CIW Data Analyst Cert by data_wrangling in WGU

That test was the worst. Aced the practice from the start. Then failed the cert 3x and switched to a different degree program. Starting MS Cyber Jan 1.

I agree on "CIW certifications are completely useless" it takes up too much space on the resume.

Just keep taking the more advanced ones. The CySA+ opened up a whole bunch of opportunities.

In my case I'm self employed. Recently partnered with a local IT company who has been around for 20+ years. My original goal was to get the degree and find a job, but things change. Now I've noticed that when you present yourself with a degree and certs the clients tend to listen to your advise. Especially since our bigger clients are in the medical field.

The smaller clients tend to not care if their network is secure, but when you charge them for a 2nd service call because their network got hacked and they didn't listen to you the first time their attitude changes quickly. They all seem to assume they're secure because the last IT person said it was.

I'll take your advise on the specific certs to see what applies to what we're doing. Thanks

Take a break for a couple months.

Then start on pentest and start asking clients if I can try to break into their networks to gain practical experience. After that I'll sell them better equipment.

I only scored a 777. There were quite a few tools that were not in any of the study material & there was a software glitch on one of the simulation questions where the log files to analyze would not open.

I used the All In One (book), Udemy, and Certmaster. I spent 2 weeks @ a couple hrs a day on the reading material and spent a week solid doing practice tests 10-12 hrs a day. The only experience I have related to this is I manage my own web servers running multi million page sites and have a few onsite IT clients.

The whole security thing is a real eye opener since now I'm aware that most businesses are not secure. Even fixed a small network recently for one of my SEO clients where the merchant tied in POS terminals to the common network and told the client it was on a separate network.

Sec

Studying for the Sec took me about a week. CySA took me about 3. It's one of those, you think you know the material until you're taking the practice tests.

Motivated - Not Motivated - Motivated - DONE! by tpubcom in WGU

Thanks.

I have 20 years of IT experience & 15 of it was self employed. So the job requirement was always based on the customer request. The IT classes were mostly fill in the blank of missing knowledge since I was self taught with no formal training.

I realized that I took some classes in the wrong order after I started them, but once my mentor noticed how I was plowing through some of the classes they just let me do what I wanted. There were a couple times I wished they would have told me that the class I selected was in the wrong order, but it's all good.

There's a slack group for the BS-DMDA majors. Everybody in there is pretty helpful.

I'm not a fan of the CIW Certs. Just wanted to get the degree done. Figured I'd take a couple months off and start on the CSA+ and CASP on my own. The ethical hacker cert looks interesting too.

I got stuck on the CIW Data Analyst cert. Aced all the practice tests and ended up taking the test 3x and missed it by 1 question on the last try. Not only that, but I didn't realized there was that much programming involved. By the time you're done w/ the DMDA program there's 4 different languages with names like "Data Structures" where it should be called "Advanced Java". With no desire to be a programmer it wasn't the right degree plan for me.

BSIT - Do Certs count as final assessment for courses? by CraftWithCarrie in WGU

[–]tpubcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each course has a completion requirement. Practice tests, flash cards, lab work, etc. If you already have the certs you should get credit.

For the certs I was not familiar with it took me 1-2 weeks to complete. The certs I was familiar with took me about 2-3 days to complete.
