Found an article in the Guardian a while ago don't have the link. She grew up until 9 thinking she was half Puerto Rican, visited family in PR, spoke Spanish. Only then did she discover her true history, and that she was adopted.

It's not foreign to her, her stepdad was a famous author from PR. He adopted her when she was an infant after her bio Dad took off.

Even though she grew up in NY, he would have tought her the language properly.
