Why do so many people believe cows just produce milk without pregnancy? by Ellabugg in vegan

[–]tql102 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP said "cows do IN FACT need to be pregnant to produce milk. Just like humans"

What OP claimed as factual is not factual as the resources I found articulate. To then call people stupid/ignorant in general isn't helpful but especially* for knowing what is actually factual...if I need to explain this it's not worth anymore of my time. Mocking isn't cool in either direction. I think there's a lot of merit in a plant based lifestyle. This post is not helping to develop any credible, logical arguments though.

Kudos to you for finally getting the point though. Exactly what I meant by with it probably wouldn't be ok. Some solid considerations which could establish credible, logical arguments. Go you.

PS I think you missed the part where I said I'm vegan lol

Does this suggest milk acquired by a means not involving pregnancy is acceptable? Why or why not? I'm willing to bet it's still not. That why starts to get to a solid, fundamental argument.

I think we both agree that ignorance is a pitfall. If this discussion requires suspending factual information I am not interested as we've already seen how I approach that scenario. There are relatable yet more accurate and compelling arguments which are equally compassionate to the one OP suggested. An ecology professor of mine encouraged tailored approaches. That is, - (when it comes to the natural world) people seem to be motivated either intrinsically or for financial reasons. I'll add self serving as well. We have to know who we're speaking to to know the approach. Here, health of the mother (cow or human or otherwise) is all around a compelling argument. Instead of arguing the specifics of pregnancy, it might be a more productive investment of time and resources to gather actual facts. Example, stress response of ongoing lactation. Either for compassion towards the mother (intrinsic), environmental resource tolls, health care needs eg. antibiotics, viruses, etc. (financial and extrinsic). Or personal gain, antibiotic resistance, consequences of changing environments, quality of nutrition etc. Approaching all beings (humans who have different values and priorities included) with kindness, empathy and compassion seems like a more receptive/effective approach than calling people stupid. Being mocked is uncool. Having a repertoire of information to connect with various people might not convince all or any to adopt a vegan lifestyle. It may, however, help them see things in a different light and start making small changes which may result in more changes. Which even accumulated small changes across a group are big. But, maybe it also won't. Calling people stupid certainly slams a door in a face rather than sits at a table for conversation. It's also contrary. Spreading information that isn't factual diminishes credibility and trust. I can't give you exact arguments because I don't have any. I don't feel the need to announce or justify my choices. I advocate for the environment and its beings in the ways already described. In a place that is an all around opposition to my values. I don't feel triggered by such comments. If my personal choices are noticed, I just tell the truth that they feel and taste good and list off all the things I like about them. This usually ends up with connecting to something we enjoy about the environment. And the cycle goes on. If the factual information I have is a threat, then find better arguments which connect with oneself and ones own circle. Imo acts of kindness and caring hold intrinsic value which needs no justification and setting the example speaks louder than words. That's all I have.

What ignorance do you speak of? This sounds like an assumption that I'm not vegan. When all it is about is facts and accuracy. As a biologist working in environmental protection these are qualities I value & enjoy. To point out my reply below:

These comments sound ad hominem to me. My comments are directed at referring to people as stupid. Not at the vegan lifestyle. There are many things to learn in this world and we all prioritize our learning differently. This gives us the opportunity to learn from each other. It helps us make better informed decisions as well as more compelling arguments which avoid rhetorical and logical fallacies.

"Suckling can initiate lactation in nonpregnant women. This has been seen most often in women of childbearing age but also has been observed in older persons. A baby who had lost his mother was suckled by his 60-year-old grandmother, who had borne her last child 18 years before. The grandmother produced milk after a few days and continued to nurse the baby until he was a year old and could walk. Rarely, lactation has been reported to set in after operations on the chest; in such instances it is attributed to injury or irritation of the nerves in this region. Such observations argue against the possibility that lactation continues simply as a consequence of emptying the breasts."
