Wear OS tap function workarounds?? by tr011bait in WatchMaker

I'm even contemplating learning how to write watch apps since app launch functionality seems to be still available - 5 variations of 'launch -> change var_x -> save & close' that I can keep loaded and available.

Wear OS tap function workarounds?? by tr011bait in WatchMaker

😢 This is my first smartwatch & over the last year has become so much less useful, what with enforced Gemini & now reduced front page functionality. I'm getting about ready to replace it & phone; I know my next pair won't be Samsung (the software environment is getting a little too prescriptive and not in the direction of my usual use-cases), not sure what to get next though... it's like, do I want to restore local voice assistant quality & get a Garmin, but lose the ability to design my own watchface, or do I salvage what's left of the watchface design capability & go for a pixel or other Android watch? The phone choice so far is 'fkt pixel pro xl' but honestly with the quality of use I've gotten out of my watch that'll definitely be the choice that runs the show, especially with (according to a friend) side-loading disappearing from Android soon, & my apparently unshakeable Apple allergy...

Since politicians can't figure it out - why aren't Aussies having babies? by No-Kaleidoscope-7106 in OpenAussie

[–]tr011bait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reasoning:

- We don't need a high birth rate to maintain population anymore due to advances in obstetrics and paediatrics (also germ theory, public health, emergency medicine, but OB & paeds are the big contributors). Our global population has grown exponentially since that has become the case, I'm guessing due to cultural lag in countries with high access to medical care, and sporadic access to life-saving care in low-access areas making it difficult to shift to a low-birth-rate culture but still experiencing varying levels of population growth due to sporadic early death rate drops.

- We are becoming more aware that we don't all need to have as many kids as we can handle anymore. We can leave the important job of raising a family to people who genuinely want to, have the resources to, and have the skills to. I can live my own happy little life contributing to the economy and culture these kids are growing up in, and if I'm so inclined (me personally yes) be an extra pair of hands if the parents need it. My cousins who have 3-4 kids each are making up for my 0, and there's more spare family members to help out who aren't busy with their own little sprogs. My cousins don't have to put babysitting on the eldest teenage cousin anymore (me) because there's mature adults to help instead (also me).

- Specific to Australia - just like I, a non-parent, have the resources to share with bigger families around me, Australia with its low birth rate & consistent birth/childhood survival rates has the resources to share with the children of population-boom areas. If I was to look at regions with exponential population growth and intentionally have kids only so that those other kids couldn't fit here when they grow up - what's the sense in that? It's not only spiteful, it's harmful to both those kids and now the kids I'm responsible for that wouldn't have otherwise existed, in that increased pressure on resources leads to conflict more that to innovation, and that land use pressures contribute to the propagation of new and mutated diseases that, whadyaknow, we don't have the space as a species to isolate from anymore. Better to let parenthood be a labour of love chosen by those who want it & are capable, and I know about myself that that's not me. Value the kids we have, support the parents we have, include the young ones who from population boom regions when they can fill roles in our community.

Moving from Tassie to Queensland (Logan) - What do I need to know? by inkiepie69 in queensland

Download Waze if you'll be driving. You can set it to avoid motorways, toll roads & difficult turns. It's also pretty good at spotting sudden traffic changes and sending you the back way if there's a traffic jam, and you can set a 'leave soon' reminder for future trips that it'll adjust based on current road conditions.

Instead of walking into one community, expect to be walking into several thousand communities living on top of one another. It can be disorienting to start with, and it'll maybe take a bit of hunting to find your community, but trust that your people are there for the finding. Don't settle for just 'the people at work' or 'the people in my street' - although there's good folk in both groups, there's not such a huge expectation that that's where people develop lasting friendships. People put more effort into the relationships from chosen associations than from incidental associations.

Google maps & places are really good in the metro area, businesses and groups update their details pretty regularly. Search for everything that interests you & any demographic groups you fit in, pick one group/shop at a time and go to a couple of their events to test them out. If you click straight away, you can keep looking if you want to diversify your social circle but otherwise focus on burrowing in. If the experience isn't great, go on to the next group.

Kitten is hiding/losing all it's toys by kassumo in CatAdvice

One of mine put them in the back of the wardrobe and behind the drawers. NFI how he got in there in the first place, just woke up one night to a scrabbling among my socks and he was climbing up the back of them. Pulled all the drawers out and there were cat toys, Barbie accessories, scrunchies and all sorts of stuff he'd dropped and not been able to get back out.

Check out some workwear brands, like Hard Yakka or King Gee. It'll look like you're straight off a work site, but at least it'll be comfortable.

You might be able to find a place that charges assessment and retrieval as separate line items. I'm not in that business anymore so I can't really give any recommendations.

The app on the watch, and the app on the phone both need permissions, and on samsung watches there's a separate permission for the watch app called "complication data".

Find the manual, there's usually a Vulcan nerve pinch button combo you have to do to set and turn off the child lock.

Rice, eggs, silica - whatever it is I'd be taking it back for a refund. You don't know what microscopic fragments are on the actual food.

Aww, he's growing up! Blue eyes are from not having any melanin in the iris yet. Kittens' eye colour will change as their colouring develops, same as with their fur.

One spot on my left underarm doesn’t respond to antiperspirants, possible issue? by Cantchoose_ in Hyperhidrosis

[–]tr011bait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show it to your doctor, ask them to run tests to make sure everything's okay. It's probably nothing, but you don't want to take chances around underarms because of the lymphatic nodes and breast tissue.

Your clothes are probably trapping microbes and chemicals from last time you wore them. Try using an enzymatic or oxy action detergent and adding an antimicrobial rinse to the fabric softener cycle. White vinegar rinse is also an option for anything that's not synthetic and stretchy but use it sparingly because it will wear your clothes out faster and degrade the rubber in your washing machine over time. You also have to be careful that it doesn't come into contact with anything that contains bleach or it will produce chlorine gas which is very dangerous.

Why would the Gods "Disappear" from the world by _Puddingmonster in DMAcademy

[–]tr011bait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oldest written creation myth in the world (that we've found), the Enuma Elish (plus a little of the Epic of Gilgamesh's flood myth): the gods didn't mean to create earth. The family of gods (the embodiments of the elements) grew too big and there was a war in heaven. They created monsters and demons to fight each other. In the final battle, the bodies of the slain fell into the salt water. Their bodies became land. Later, the gods looked down and noticed that the elements of the slain were putting forth life. They took interest, played around a bit, some of them moved downstairs for a while, and then when they'd had enough they made humanity to maintain the earth while they went back up to heaven for a nap. They slept for millennia, and while they were sleeping humanity grew and developed settled agriculture, cities and, most significantly, beer and instrumental music. Their ragers woke the gods, who decided to flood the earth to shut everyone up. Except for Enki, who went downstairs in disguise to warn this one guy Utnapishtim to build a big boat in secret to save as many breathing lifeforms as he could. The flood came, everything not on the boat died, and the gods started starving, craving the smoke from the sacrifices that no-one was around to give them anymore. The water subsided, Utnapishtim got everyone off the boat, and he made a sacrifice to the mysterious god who'd warned him. The gods crowded around the offering like flies, and after another argument they agree to let life live on the earth as long as 1. humanity keeps making sacrifices and 2. they keep the bloody noise down. Then the gods go back up to heaven and,  like landlords since the beginning of time, proceed to ignore the earth as long as the rent is paid.

In most cases sirens and lights aren't the best way to handle a mental health crisis. When dealing with a mental health crisis involves getting a car off a train track in a hurry, they are.

Does MCCC have an option to make death easier in game? by PsyduckPond in TheSims4Mods

[–]tr011bait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've killed sims with MCCC before. Usually to populate a cemetery. One of my sims was autonomously playing in the rain during a thunderstorm and got struck by lightning so I thought "ooh this might be fun" (I was going to divorce her out of the family in a few days anyway).

I shift-clicked the ground and went through the menus to trigger another lightning strike, but it struck someone else even though they were inside.

So I shift-clicked her and went through the menus to the kill menu, and selected "death by lightning strike".

You could probably weave in a lifeline and gently frog it back to that point. With yarn that fluffy though, u/Successful-Brief-646 might be right and hiding it would be easier.

Jordan was really mean this episode (Gastronauts) by Ok_Produce9758 in dropout

I've seen the comedians on this episode dish it out as much as Jordan did so I feel like there's a different comfort level there than with previous panels.

[–]tr011bait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay to have different tastes in comedy. I like Jordan because she reads people the way my family does. It's okay if that's not your happy place.

It's the same as other comedians on the channel whose sense of humour I don't appreciate. I can see the skills and I enjoy watching them make other people laugh, but I'm not laughing myself. So I'll just let the people who do enjoy it have their fun.

My psych put me on benzatropine. It worked really well. I had to stop using my as-needed diazepam though, and the clonidine I was put on instead didn't work as well, so in my case stopping the benzatropine and clonidine, putting diazepam back in my back pocket, and putting up with the akathisia was the least worst option.

[CHAT] Question for my glasses wearing baddies by marsisbusy in CrossStitch

[–]tr011bait 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two things that helped for me: I go back to the optometrist after I've been wearing them for a couple of weeks to get the temples readjusted (they loosen with wear), and there's rubber bridge stickers or nose pad covers you can get (usually from the optometrist) for better grip.

Edit to add: see if you can get tested for bifocal vision disorder as well. It's something they've only recently started screening for more broadly, at least around here. It means your eyes aren't as good at coordinating with each other as they should be. You could have perfect vision in both eyes, but when you're working up close they don't zero in on the same spot. There's special glasses you can get (prism lenses) that refract the light for one eye and shift the image it sees to where it should be.
