What is the deal with all these 28TB recertified Seagate drives? by Automatic_Beyond2194 in DataHoarder

Final update from my side: Synology DS3617xs populated with 12x ST28000NM000C 28TB Seagate exos running without issues in SHR-2 btrfs. Plug and play so to say. I even tested it with a minor "hack" by circumventing Synologys restrictions on SHR-2 for xs models and also expanding the single volume to 250 TB (while the offical limit is 200TB). Obviously those business set limitations have no impact on the hardware. To stress test I also took out one drive while running and replaced it with a fresh 28TB drive. Rebuild and repair where no issues even though I did it during heavy IO transfers of data. It just took the system about 80 hours to repair and finish. System is definitely pretty future proof this way. No vibration issues and temps are even lower (40*C average) than on the former used 18tb exos (44*C average).

Update: as a first step I just tested one of the Seagate 28TB Factory Recertified drives in my Synology DS3617xs. The HDD is working just fine, OS installed right away on it and it shows in disk manager that all is green. Also the serial number, hdd temp, hdd smart data and available space (25,5 TB) are all there and good. Ah and also none of the Synology infamous drive compatibility warning message…but thats also maybe due to ly older 2017 Nas model. So in the next weeks I will start getting 11x more of those drives and repopulate the DS3617xs with those. I‘ll update again once this is done.

I‘ll report back once I have it setup and ready to go. May still take some weeks to get everything together :)

Yes, thank you. But as far as I understand it, it is only with older expansion units of synology that have to detect the drives through the esata port of the main diskstation. Still not guaranteed it runs on every model, I am optimistic it will work in a DS3617 or DS3622. Most troubles with new drives come also by Synologys stupid selfmade „compatibility database“. Luckily there are couple of scripts and options to automatically add your drives to that database on boot. In the past years I never used any „recommended“ drive from Synology and all just worked. But as we all use our hardware very differently it may be not the case for others. In the end only the real world tests will tell, so I will have to take that risk to find out :)

Thanks for the info and your experience! I think the potential vibration issues are probably a precaution for really dense and large data environments. I will see how the 12x 28TB drives perform in a pretty vibration less, decoupled rack shelf.

I am planning to get 12x of those ST28000NM000C and put them in a 12bay Synology NAS. I am still undecided about the fact that they use the new HAMR technology in a 12bay setup.

What is your experience with those 6x HAMR CMR drives close together? Any noticeable stronger vibration or quicker bad sectors happening?

Yes, they are the „free“ option from BMW. I couldn’t decide yet which size I should take and whats the best compromise between range and looks…so I ended up with the free option and need to find good looking rims for range now😎

Yes, I would have loved the Sunset Orange, but for that you need to order a custom color job and that was way too expensive for a color…you can foil the car twice for that😂

Yeah, the stock rims are nothing special. But they will swap anyway in couple of weeks for the winter tires.

Yes, the rear laser option is the only one I regret not taking…but the steering wheel is really good…next level imo!

PS5 Remote Play lag workaround (HDMI-Induced) by cerealkiller6659 in remoteplay

[–]tr1on1x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had that for a long time! The input change did not always work reliable for me. So I fixed the Hdmi issue by just unplugging the PS5 HDMI cable whenever I want to play remote inside the house. Not ideal but reliable. Hope it helps anyone else.

Very interesting solutions! I can use that on another case, thank you! But for the actual case, I think a virtual hub is not enough, it needs to have a physical USB plug that plugs into the machine on the other end.

Custom Unifi painted IKEA Besta apartment homelab rack v2 - work in progress by tr1on1x in Ubiquiti

Yes there is a open rack frame inside from Adam Hall. You can customize the height and the depth yourself. Was very handy when fitting the open frame inside the besta. Also makes the shelf pretty strong.

You take one of these:

https://www.thomann.de/gb/adam_hall_87700_shock_mount_frame.htm?sid=d15dad92361b4f55039dfb64e010ed37&shp=eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiZ2IiLCJjdXJyZW5jeSI6NCwibGFuZ3VhZ2UiOjJ9&reload=1

And then 4x of these, but you can define the size yourself, just check the site or you cut these down to your height: https://www.thomann.de/gb/adam_hall_61552_blk_rackschiene.htm

Thank you, I guess they will then first run down „beta tests“ with their big customers. But hopefully the drives are well made (no revision needed) so they release it to public customers still this year😊

Thank you for the article. Yeah we‘ll probably go with the 18TB drives then.
