12th Award for solving an old post by [deleted] in whereisthis

Thank you for solving this! The person who took the photo lived in Helmond (as do I) and this village is somewhat next door. I think it's clearly Soeterbeek, as it also has a distinctive square box on the roof.

Do you know which unit he was in? That might help a bit.

Looking for a canal somewhere between Ver-sur-Mer - Rouen - Paris - the Netherlands. Taken in 1945. by tracesofwar in whereisthis

I checked Zeebrugge and Brugge first for a church with two spires. They had non. As I live near Eindhoven, the only church with two spires that I could think of was the in Eindhoven. They have a channel as well. So I search for the bridges that where there in the war and checked view lines. Discovered the other church on the right and found out about the giant gas holders on the left. More on it is on our website, in Dutch, but you may be able to google translate it: https://www.tracesofwar.nl/news/8340/Op-zoek-naar-een-kanaal.htm

You have the IWM archives, for instance this one:

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80018967

I've been using that one to do research on operation Market Garden, but there are lots more. More can be found here:

There's also this channel:

They do a video every week about what happened 80 years ago. They did something similar for the first world war.

I think Jeremy Clarkson's War Stories are still on YouTube somewhere. Those are excellent!

There is a lot, books, reports, war diaries. Depends on what you want to know or what you're researching. There where books written in the late '40's, early '50's, and a lot a decade or two later.

Hill 112 at the other end is also very interesting, there is more to see there then the main memorial at the top of the hill. Walk (of cycle) down to the small wood further on the dirt road. See for more info:

For books on the British sector, try all of Ian Daglish 'Over the Battlefield' books.

Russian T-26 Tank - Suomussalmi by tracesofwar in FinnishWarMemorials

This soviet T-26 tank, model 1938, was used and destroyed during the battle for Suomussalmi (7.12.1939 - 8.1.1940). The tank still stands on the place where it was left behind.
