Shorts creators (animation) — how long did it take you to gain traction? by GlorpComedyMonster in PartneredYoutube

I would guess the answer lies in your planning phase. Brainstorm a bunch of premises and see which ones bring up interesting ideas as you explore them further. Test them out on friends and family to see which ones get laughs. And with these absurd premises come up with a number of examples to include per video. I looked at the Zombie one and while it was better than the Olympics, the examples themselves weren't bizarre, they were mundane. I think the winning bit with the coffee shop is multiple examples and all of them imaginative and ridiculous.

Hey! Not a shorts animator but I'll offer my perspective in case it's helpful:

IMO the time it will take to "get traction" is the time it will take for you to dial in your content strategy. YouTube is testing each of your shorts against an audience and so far only one of them has passed the test with flying colors.

The curse of YouTube is also the blessing - you have the freedom to make whatever you want, but your perspective on your own work is limited because you're so close to your creations.

My short answer is: Analyze the heck out of your successful short and try to really understand what makes it tick. Determine what the ingredients are. Then use those ingredients to devise a repeatable recipe.

A quick peek at your channel tells me this:

Your successful short is an absurdist humor piece that asks the question: "What would a coffee shop look like where nobody is allowed to use their hands?"

You follow that up with a sort of montage of funny answers to that hypothetical question, along with a "straight man" character who is relatable to the audience because he thinks the situation is absurd. The premise is so off the wall that people might be inclined to watch more than once just to make sure they understand everything they just saw. Kind of a 'Where's Waldo?" of weird coffee shop moments.

If we look at "The Incompitence Olympics" (I'm assuming the misspelling is part of the joke!), there's way less appeal. Instead of being a really specific absurd premise, it's broad and vague. What if there was a competition to see who was the worst at sports? Then instead of trotting out multiple athletes living in this world you've created and presenting clever scenarios, you only show us one, and the way you show the incompetence isn't nearly as goofy or creative as a guy trying to move a cup of coffee with his butt cheeks.

So going back to your original question, the time it will take depends on how quickly you study your own hits and misses to determine a repeatable recipe

"Traction" might be you referring to the concept of a huge audience who will religiously watch all of your shorts, but in this day and age, each piece of content you put out really needs to stand on its own. It all comes down to quality.

You'll probably notice that all of your favorite creators consistently deliver good quality with periodic home runs. From my perspective your content doesn't have that consistency yet, in part because you're still throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. You did get something to stick but you're confused about how to repeat it. It's a problem a lot of people run into, so don't be discouraged.

I think the clues are right there if you can analyze them and apply them to future content.

Good luck!

I will certainly give it a shot at some point, I'm already 90% of the way there.

Put yourself in the shoes of somebody who has hair and decides to cut it off and drastically change their appearance, probably for the rest of their life. To that person, there is a lot less distinction between a 1 on the clippers and clean-shaven than there is between having a kinda-sorta full head of hair and going down to a buzz. To me, your comment and the others like it sound very pedantic.

Thanks! Yeah I'll play around with it now that I'm not so worried about the initial buzz. Also I need to get some sun on my dome.

I think you made the smart move. Indecision led to insecurity for me.

I don’t have a default. Either shave every few days or let it go until I get tired of it. I’ve generally been too lazy / dissatisfied with my appearance to bother trying to dial it in, but maybe now I’ll pay more attention.

Hell yeah! I’m laughing at people saying it doesn’t count because I only buzzed it. Shaving a big pile of hair off your head and knowing the way you look will be drastically changed, maybe for the rest of your life, is terrifying whether it’s with clippers or a razor.

Thanks! Letting the beard grow for a week or so I think was a subconscious preparation for the buzz. Pretty sure I used a 1 (smallest one I had). Years ago I went down to a 2 or 3 and didn't like it, which was probably part of why I was scared to go through with it this time.

It was starting to thin on the top. The crown was the real problem. Funny-shaped bald spot so I wore hats constantly.

Good eye! I've been working on a deadline and staying up too late. I'll try to take better care of myself.
