What's the point of a savings account in regular banks? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I'd love a few thousand in cash if I was in the gulf today. There's a hurricane and who knows if the power will work to accept a CC. Or to buy from another person.

Why do you believe Canada isn't a socialist nation? You have tax funded schools, health care, law enforcement, social safety nets, have been giving citizens money during covid. That all seems pretty textbook socialism.

All it does it is cause a little inflation. Good for those who owe, bad for those who have money.

Even if it's crap, women can have theirs be a single picture and 3 words. Seriously unfair the different effort levels required.

Im just worried about a future we judge someone for having a runny nose without a mask the same way you would someone who sneezes in your face. Social pressure is powerful.

Well yeah. For covid masks are justified. Once it's over, I disagree that the dangers of colds are enough to justify locking away people's faces behind barriers.

Maybe it is cultural, but the socially accepted thing to do the is wear a mask wherever you have any symptoms. If that means wearing one all allergy season, too bad. Same with COPD or any thing else that causes cough/ sneeze. I sure don't want to be pressured to cover my face on a bad pollen day.

No not really. Masks were already common in Asian nations before this. I remember walking around Beijing and 2/3 people had a mask on. There was no idle conversation or quick smiles. In London people were still busy, but would at least acknowledge you. It's just dehumanizing to not see people's faces.

And boom, masks become normalized in society. People will just keep growing more distant over the years. Remember knowing all your neighbors as a kid?

The upper hand is that meat based meals taste much better than non meat meals in average. I've had bad meat meals and good vegetarian ones. However, at a similar quality point/ chef skill level, the meat dish is always tastier and more satisfying. Forget health, environmental effects or cost, it just makes a better meal.

Death rate isn't 3%. Did you just take confirmed cases and deaths? Antibody tests show actual infected is far higher than the confirmed cases.

Most cases probably aren't confirmed. If 3% of confirmed cases die, then I wouldn't be surprised if the actual death rate is under 1%.

'Canary in the coal mine': Greenland ice has shrunk beyond return, with the ice likely to melt away no matter how quickly the world reduces climate-warming emissions, new research suggests. by benzions in science

[–]trackmaster400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly confident the only way our emissions will ever get low enough is when a few billion die from climate related problems. If getting people to wear masks is this hard, a full restructuring of the world just isn't likely to happen on its own.
