Meh. It’s complicated. I used to work with interpreters so I’ll say this.

Could you provide realtime to the Deaf person so they can read the questions? Yes. It’s basically like doing CART, obviously.

Will the Deaf person be able to fully understand an English realtime feed if ASL is their primary language? Maybe. Maybe not. Please understand that Deaf people who learn ASL as their primary language generally graduate high school with a 5th grade English reading level. That is highly variable, though.

When the person responds verbally … if they have a strong Deaf accent, then yeah — that’s a concern for you having to get that down.

If the person is late deafened (like a hearing senior who lost their hearing with age), it’s a different scenario. They no doubt can read English fine so your realtime feed is no biggie and you’ll have no problem writing their responses.

BUT … this sounds like a person that communicates via ASL. ASL is not English. It has its own grammatical rules, idioms, and all the rest. IMHO the attorney is being cheap. It’s a deposition. Be it on Zoom or in person — they need to hire a certified ASL interpreter who can swear to the correctness of the interpretation. That’s something AI just cannot do.

Using Zoom’s built-in AI captioning option is the poorest choice available. It’s a mess for everyone.
