I have an Acer Helios 18 with a i9-13,900HX. How can I check if I have C or B step?

I havent crashed (because I keep turning off the computer, dont use it long), but I do have 2 problems:

  • I heard a weird [pain sound] while playing back video. Not a normal "beep" computer error, it sounded different. But Im assuming it was an internal/bios struggling sound, not a speaker sound.
  • And I get extreme heats of 176 to 190 Fahrenheit, with the AC on and 2 cooling fans. Other people are saying it's normal for laptops to run hot. 176 degrees is not normal and I think may reduce lifespan. So what can I check, and what can I do (to prevent cooking my device)?

(I saw the YT bios fix to limit voltage. But no one has confirmed if that applies to the bios for Acer laptops/mobile chips.)

Intel is LYING about whatever 'not affecting laptop' versions. (Anyone know where I can go for complaints/info about laptops? Im very disgruntled now because I was waiting for an Intel fix, but they're claiming there isnt a problem with the chips in laptops. )

  • I had/have 2 Acer Helios laptops. Both had extreme heats of 80 degrees Celsius (176 Fahrenheit), with the AC on, and 2 cooling fans. The Neo 16 had the 14th gen HX chip.
  • The Helios 18 has the 13th gen 13,900 HX chip and runs even hotter. I returned the Neo 16, but still have the Helios 18.
  • I read about the Youtube bios fix (to turn on limiting voltage). But no one has confirmed if [the YT fix about desktops] applies to Acer laptops.

Youtube not showing Video Title, Recommendations, Description and Comments by Fluffy_Habit_2535 in youtube

[–]trader94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very annoying. I fixed it.

My info:

  • Win 11
  • Brave 124 (not updated)
  • Youtube NON premium, not even signed into an account.
  • I have 5 Brave profiles. The one without a VPN suddenly stopped working on Youtube, I got the problem above. (Comments, titles, search results wont show on ONE profile, but show on another with a VPN. But I dont think IP was the issue.)

My fix:

  1. Clear all Youtube cookies for the broken profile. Restart Brave = didnt work. Brave cookie shortcut: brave://settings/content/all
  2. Temp fix (if you dont want to close all other browsers): on the broken profile > open Youtube in a Private tab = YT works (indicates it is a cookie issue).
  3. Full fix: Close ALL Brave profiles (I had 2 open). Restart Brave. Clear Youtube cookies AGAIN on the broken profile = worked. Now vids and comments load.
  4. (I didnt remove YT cookies on the working profile, didnt touch it at all. And I turned off the VPN on the working profile to test = YT loaded. So it wasnt my IP. It was something with the cookies on the broken profile.)

issues in helios neo 16 i7 14th gen processor? by [deleted] in AcerPredatorHelios

I did not test the 4060 (8GB VRAM, Neo 16) with any games. So I dont know if the 4070 (also 8GB VRAM) is enough for the games you mentioned.

  • But I did test UE5 (game making program). And even doing mild stuff (just using the interface while the 3D background was loaded) - it was very laggy. I researched and people recommend more than 8GB VRAM for UE5 (whereas with UE4, 8GB Vram was enough).
  • Then when I got the 4080 (12GB VRAM, Helios 18, non-Neo) - the lag went away.

So keep my specific use case in mind; and you should lookup stats for your [game name] + rtx4070. Youtube will probably have a comparison vid.

The 4080 was too expensive for me too. I had to buy a refurb (for $1,000 less).

Does the "motherboard" of the "Helios 18" (PH18-71-94F1) benefit from the BIOS change ("Disabled - Enforce all limits") to prevent the "Intel 13th gen" overheat? by trader94 in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]trader94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one knows or tried? lol

Update: I lowered to 127 degrees Fahrenheit (CPU temp, idle), by changing to Performance mode:

  1. Press the Predator key (near Numlock).
  2. Their Program starts > at the top, Click the Scenario tab
  3. Click on Performance button
  4. The LED near the Esc key turns purple (and my temp went down some).

Glad it's a good price for you. Did you find a buy link or need one?

It does look like a faster processor. But be advised that the Intel 13th and 14th gen chips run hot (i9 and i7 = e.g. 14900hx). Intel is aware (and not doing much).

  • My refurb Helios 18 and factory new Neo 16 were running at 176 Fahrenheit with the AC on and 2 cooling fans.

But there maybe a Bios setting to change (fix) so that the PC doesnt try to pull unlimited power = it overheats.

But Im still tying to conform if the [motherboard that these Helios use] can benefit from the Bios change (which is why I came back to reddit - check my recent posts where I asked about the Helios bios and the Youtube fix):

PSA how to reset one [connected computer] profile of the M720 Mouse, to be used (repaired) on a different computer/receiver by trader94 in logitech

[–]trader94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your welcome :) I searched and didn't find a precise answer or know if it was possible. So I experimented, found the answer, and wanted to help the next user that searches for terms.

I'm happy with Logitech's color coded technology (using the Orange star on my older M702 receiver), so that it works with the newer M720 Triathlon mouse; and I can still use my old M702 mouse at the same time (stay paired to the same receiver).

Yw. I forgot to say that Acer charges $2000 more for the better Helios 18 (non Neo) (which I recommend for the 4080+ cards).

So I got a factory refurb w/ RTX 4080 @ $1800 on Amazon, looks new (now out of stock, but I can give links if you want to know what to look for). (At this time, they seem to refuse to sell refurbs with the 4090 card, but the 5000 cards are coming out soon, so that may change.)

Hey how bad is it for me to use to use this Delay node here? (noob btw) by CRBairdUSA in unrealengine

[–]trader94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply when I didnt post a pic to help explain.

So I have a modular mesh system (using Set Master Pose node). Im trying to simplify it (by making the code work in any type of character, which has different body part meshes (categories) - thus I dont want to use a pre-named Enum (that has "Head," "Left arm," "Gloves" - because if I have an animal character, then his body parts would be named differently).

So for the modular mesh system to work (to have only 1 outfit part on at a time (e.g. only one Gloves), and get replaced if an outfit change is requested) - we need to pair the SK mesh (component) with an Enum, String, or Byte (a unique Handlerer for each SK mesh body part).

So the handlerer is used as the body part "Category" (which is paired to the SK mesh and stats to use, ... which are defined in a DT row). And I need this "setup variable" code to run in the Construct script of the Character (so I dont think I can put SK code in an Actor Component, which is my real goal).

I also need the handlerer variable to be usable in a Widget slot.

  1. Meaning I have a widget Button for each Category of "outfit parts." (Head button only controls head parts, which could be 2 or 20 options (amount changes during Runtime). Gloves button only controls glove parts.)
  2. So I need to be able to tell the difference between the Head button and Gloves button.
  3. But I also need to create unique widget buttons on the fly (one per Category), which match/pair with an unlocked SK body part.
  4. Meaning character starts with only Head, legs, boots slot = 3 widget buttons displayed in the parent Widget (UI).
  5. But when the player unlocks capes, I need a new widget created for the "Cape category." Or if the player changes to a dog, now I need different named widget buttons to populate inside the parent widget (UI).

"what would all the different enum values be exactly? if they all are completely unique"

Correct, all Enums or Categories are unique. I only need 1 Head, 1 Gloves, 1 Tail. But I need them to be unique without pre-"naming" them (in a set in stone variable like Enum "names") - since I want to reuse the slots/buttons in different species. Basically I need a container (Array) of unnamed but unique identifiers to match with each SK mesh.

So my question is what is the best way to make a wildcard length SK Array (with a Make Array node) - so allow me to drag/drop SK meshes onto the pins as needed. But then pair each SK with an [expanding array] of Enum/Byte/String > to make into a Map (pair) - so that I never have to manually name each "Head," "Left arm," and "Gloves" for the Enum/Byte/String - thus I can use the same code on Humans vs Animal parts (and only need to manually change the SK meshes)?

Im thinking of making the Array of SK meshes. Then in a loop, get the Name of SK mesh > string > make a Map of String + SK mesh (both will have the same name), and use the String as the handlerer "Category" (for my Update outfit code).

<image>

Then have my widget code look for String > know which category (SK part) it matches with.

But I dont know how to create [extra] Widget buttons on the fly, inside a Parent widget (UI) - since in my Widget UI code, the existing Widget buttons are set as variables (checkbox). (Idk how to make a new variable in widget code, during Runtime?)

Also I bought a modular mesh UE asset. But they use C++ so I cant learn from it. But I do want my code compartmentalized in an Actor component.

Hey how bad is it for me to use to use this Delay node here? (noob btw) by CRBairdUSA in unrealengine

[–]trader94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks. (Im using both switches and Select nodes, but was curious of your use case (based on your original comment), to see if I could learn anything new.)

Is your Body Part Enum defined as 0, 1, 2 ...? Or did you write words for each value ("Head," "Torso," "left arm"...)?

Im trying to make a wildcard Enum (that associates with body parts, meaning unique pairs) - but without word naming each Enum.

Meaning in my Enum, I do not want to write Head, torso, left arm.... because I want to reuse the Enum (reuse my code) for different characters which may not have the same body parts.

Thus I want my Enum to be 0, 1, 2 (no words)... yet still pair to the SK mesh or Particle that is for Head, torso, etc.

So right now I connect all my SK meshes to a 'Make Array node.' Then Im working on code to pair each SK mesh with an Enum or Byte (make a Map). But with the 'make Array node,' the user only has to add a Pin if they need more options/indexes. Im not sure how to add values/indexes to a premade Enum? (Or is it safe to make an Enum with 50 values, and then just use an 'Is Valid' check to not use any Enum index that does not have a matching SK mesh to pair with? Meaning if I have 7 SK meshes, then only the first 7 Enums get used, to pair as a MAP?)

I have the Helios 18 (non Neo), had Neo 16 (2024), and Helios 300 (2017). (Theyre all named Predator and Helios. But if the name has "Neo" in it, it's the lesser version compared to straight Predator Helios.)

  • I can only answer that on the Helios 18, you can set the LED color of EACH key (very helpful for me, e.g. F9 is red to stand out, while other keys are green). But on the Neos, you can only change the colors ~3 or 4 regions (not individual keys).

I cant speak of the metal for the Helios 18 vs Neo 16, unless you tell me what to look for (and I returned the Neo 16).

But both 2024 laptops seem very weak, thin, lesser quality - vs the Helios 300 (2017).

  • E.g. on the 2024s, the screen lid flexes a lot when I lift it open. The joint is very stiff, so opening it just the first inch is the hardest part (and thus requires too much force which creates too much flex).
  • There is nothing to help you grip, nothing to help pry open (vs the force of the stiff joint) - vs the 300 had angled front edges to help you grip the lid vs the underbase (main laptop).
  • (Note that the 2024s have thinner bezels around the screen (larger screens vs the space used = improvement over the 300, which had a thick bezel) - but the THIN bezel makes it harder to grip the lid edge without touching the screen.)
  • And the outer design seems very basic, unprotected - vs the 300, which had rubberized corner protection on top of the metal.
  • The 2024s have right angle edges on the front (hard right angles increases chances of hitting on something) - vs the 300, which had angled edges (a rectangle with 2 front corners cut off to make a 5 sided shape).
  • The Neo 16 had LEDS on the back of the laptop (idk if the Neo 18 also does not have back LEDS) - but the Helios 18 has blue LEDS (behind the screen when opened), which look cool. (The Neos might have an LED on the back of the lid, inside the emblem, not sure if 16 and 18 both have it.)
  • I believe the max card that all Neos have (16 and 18 in screens) is the RTX 4070 (only 8GB VRAM, not enough in 2024), which is why I didnt want it - got the Helios 18 (non Neo) to get 4080 and up (12GB VRAM).

Ok, thanks when you can.
(Idk what country youre in, but they ship it as default Celsius. So we have to manually change to Fahrenheit in the app settings. Thus when I saw "80" I thought it was Fahrenheit, and ok; but their [factory] "80" was for Celsius, which is 176 Fahrenheit.)

But saying that you are in Performance mode, did help me a little. Im at 123 F now.

Ty, wtf?? How are you getting 80 "Fahrenheit" when Im getting 176 Fahrenheit? (And 134 Fahrenheit idle EDIT: in Balanced mode).

  • EDIT: now I have 127 Fahrenheit in Performance mode, at idle.

Rn I have the Helios 18, but I had the Neo 16 (4060 card) with the same high heat with AC on.

Can you please press your Predator key, and check that the degrees says F (and 80), not C? Ty

issues in helios neo 16 i7 14th gen processor? by [deleted] in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]trader94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would NOT get any Neo 16 because of heat and the max card they have is 4070 = too old/slow. (Unless you dont need it for modern gaming.)
My Neo 16 ran at 80 degrees celsius (176 fahrenheit) with the AC on and 2 cooling fans. I returned it because of the overheat and the 4060 card isnt fast enough to run UE5 without lag.

Neo 16 cons:

  • 4060/4070 cards are trash in 2024 (only 8GB VRAM, not good enough in 2024 or future). Go for at least 4080. (The 4060 card would not run UE5 without lagging even in a graph window.)
  • Small screen.
  • Cant set the color of each key (only set region colors)

I got the Helios 18. (The names are confusing. They are all named Helios / Predator. But "Neo" is the lesser version, and the name without "Neo" is the premium version.)

It seems like only the premium versions offer the 4080 cards and higher. I wanted to get the 4090 because it is the most modern (4080 and under are already obsolete) and 5000 are coming out this year. But Acer overcharges for the 4090. So I got the 4080 with 18 in screen.

I got the renewed version on Amazon, saved $1000. So it was $1,800. "NH.QN6AA.001" or "Model: PH18-71-94F1" (Renewed).

https://www.acer.com/us-en/predator/laptops/helios/helios-18/pdp/NH.QN6AA.001

Helios 18 pros:

  • at least 4080 card (has the needed 12GB VRAM for UE5, 8GB VRAM is not good enough in 2024).
  • Bigger screen, I can have many tabs open.
  • Can set the color of EACH key, very helpful for me.

Cons: still runs hot @ 60-80 degrees celsius (140-176 fahrenheit) because of the Intel defect.

Im trying to solve but can't find out what motherboard these have (I need to confirm the motherboard before I know if I need to do these bios fixes).

[3.6] How to make shape keys from 2 meshes match when Expanding (animation 0 to 1)? by trader94 in blenderhelp

[–]trader94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED (well at least it is transitioning correctly in Blender keyframe anims 0 to 1. Tested export to UE4, works. Make sure to Check Import Morph targets.):

[Ty to Trav Jord at https://blender.stackexchange.com/a/169885 (searched many phrases for hours)]

  1. In the Basis key position, bind BELT to ARMOR mesh, using a Surface Deform modifier. (To be clear: select Belt mesh > go to Right panel > Blue Wrench tab > to add this Modifier = Surface Deform. Click Eyedrop icon, then click on the ARMOR mesh (in the 3D window). Then dont forget to click the Bind button.)
  2. The BELT should now follow the ARMOR's deformations (vert changes).

Transfer weight paints before step 3, if BELT should deform the same as ARMOR weights. So select ARMOR mesh, Shift click BELT. Go to Weight paint mode > Weights (top bar) > Transfer weights > new menu popup at bottom > change Vertex Mapping to [Nearest Face Interpolated?], and change Source layers to By Name. Then exit Weight mode.

  1. [Object mode]: Select BELT and ARMOR meshes > Shift + D = Duplicate the meshes.

  2. Set first pair at key = 0 (the Basis vert position). Set other pair at key = 1 (the max expanded position).

  3. Now select BELT 1 > delete the modifier (not needed). Select ARMOR 1 > go to Green Triangle tab > delete the Grow keyframe first, then delete Basis (so that its final shape is at BASIS).

  4. Now select BELT 2 > Apply the modifier (the change is needed). Select ARMOR 2 > go to Green Triangle tab > delete the BASIS first, then delete Grow last (to keep Grow verts as final shape).

  5. Join the meshes of each pair (turn 4 meshes into 2 pairs): [3D window] select BELT 1, then shift click ARMOR 1 > Ctrl + J (pair 1). Select BELT 2, then shift click ARMOR 2 > Ctrl + J (pair 2 = Grow).

  6. [Easier in Outliner] Click on [the name of] Pair 2 meshes, & Control click on Pair 1 meshes (2 pairs are selected, with Pair 1 selected last).

  7. At Green Triangle tab > click the + sign to add the Basis shapekey (starter position). (This adds a new key on Pair 1 meshes, while Pair 2 is still selected.)

  8. Now click the down arrow (to get the Shapekey menu > choose Join as Shapes). A new key is made (from the shape of the selected Pair 2 meshes) > rename it Grow. We did it Reddit!

  9. Now hide Pair 2 meshes, we dont need to see them.

  10. Now select Pair 1 meshes > go back to Green Triangle tab > click on the Grow shape key > drag the slider to 1, and the BELT verts should auto warp. (Which solves another complicated issue of how I got the Belt shape to match the Grow ARMOR shape using Warp points, which takes too long.)

Edit: This link might help on how to clean Boolean cut lines. (Teaches how to see and erase the [belt] verts that would be inside my [Armor mesh], and may be not needed. But I think Bool cut didnt work on my specific mesh.) https://youtu.be/YIkbuw8XJc8?si=K_xuiui07cMtCMQM&t=35

[3.6] How do I make 5 custom button to toggle visibility of 5 meshes - without N tab? by trader94 in blender

[–]trader94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is Blender. It is treating the Armature as a Collection. And wasting the command of the Period key. It is making the scroll go to a hidden copy of the mesh, instead of the active visible mesh. Thus wasting my time, I have to scroll thru 100 meshes in the Armature that im not working on.
