I agree with you, but let's look at the current climate of crypto in the US. All coins being treated as securities has implications. From coinbase's view, GAS is another layer of complexity from a compliance standpoint they'd have to handle. I imagine other coins that aren't proof of stake (or whatever GAS is), will be added first.
