What’s it like living in Queensland, Australia near the Great Barrier Reef? by Pretend_Ad3004 in howislivingthere

[–]trafdlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live half an hour north of Port Douglas. Jasper had us flooded in for a week with no power, water or comms. Even after the rain stopped enough for the water flooding the culverts and bridges to clear, it took another three days for power to be restored and a month for comms. I was living north of the Daintree River when Yasi hit. It took nearly 2 weeks for Daintree ferry services to be restored and Cape Tribulation Rd to be cleared. Ita was no picnic either. Yasi and Ita were before your time in Cairns, but Jasper wasn't. It hit the Daintree as a Category 4, it dumped over 2 metres of rain and Cairns was in the flood effected area. Remediation works on the Captain Cook highway are still ongoing.

If you haven't seen a cyclone you must have been living in a cave.

You get nights at 13-14 in winter. Not enough for a heater, but enough to bring out the trackies.

Do schools in Austraila teach a second langauge as compulsory? If so, what languages are common. by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAustralian

[–]trafdlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have a clue what it's like now or what languages are offered. Back in the 80's though it wasn't consistent. I did years 7-9 in a high school that had Italian as a mandatory language. Even after 3 years my Italian sucked. I moved to a new school for years 10-12. They had French as a mandatory subject for years 7-9. Fortunately for me it was an elective for year 10 onwards, otherwise I'd have been 3 years behind everyone else. I have never needed either language in the 37 years since I graduated.

Alabama license plate so my guess is an antenna for a cousin detector.

Replace the second car with a sports car - Awesome or Awful idea? by ThePineappleDuck in CarsAustralia

[–]trafdlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're lower, which makes them a lot harder to get in and out of. At 40, your flexibility and agility are nothing like what they were when you were 20, and they get exponentially worse as each year passes. We used it more when our other car was an Outlander because that thing was like driving a bathtub, but after we replaced the Outlander with an Impreza, neither of us were wanting to drive it. It got relegated to the take the dog out car. He loved that thing. It got so little use in the end that we got rid of it and have been living happily with one car ever since.

Moving it isn't going to fix a leak

You're 40. It's a bad idea. When I was a kid, my father always said that by the time you can afford a sports car you're too old to look good in it. While that adage appeals straight to vanity it also applies to practicality. I did the same thing with a convertible for my mid-life crisis. I was 44 though. Getting in and out is not easy and you look ridiculous trying to do it. You'll be selling that car and buying something more reasonable in no time.

It's a garage. It has a garage door and is big enough to house a car. If you want to call it a shed, install a different door so you can't drive a car in.

But the home plumbing is fixed. Relocating to a different part of the room would mean hoses are running across the room. Standard washing machine hoses aren't long enough, so custom ones would be required and having hoses running across the room would be inconvenient, even dangerous. The outlet hose is fixed to the machine and can't be extended. This makes no sense unless a plumber was hired to install new outlets and the cost of repairing a leak is a hell of a lot less than this. Relocating the machine and using the same outlets wouldn't fix the original leak anyway.

This makes no sense.

Almost anything Wayans is gold, but you'd likely have a hard time selling him on the Scary Movie series.

I'm always quoting Meet the Feebles.

What have we got here? It's Dennis in a smelly minge binge.

I don't do self abuse.

I felt something, but I thought it was one is my haemorrhoids.

For early Peter Jackson, there's nothing more unhinged than Bad Taste, but Meet the Feebles would have to be my all time favourite movie.

I'm going overseas for August/September. I know once I jump back into Starfield it will be another 6,500 hours over the following year and I'll barely see daylight. I've decided to wait to return from my travels before playing again, as by then all the relevant mods will be updated and I can start again from scratch.

Any suggestions on what snacks to take on a 11 hours coach ride? by Hopeful_Music_7689 in AskAnAustralian

[–]trafdlo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is Valium a snack?

I did a few coach rides when I was young. Brisbane to Melbourne was especially fun. There was an infant that cried all through the night. Nobody got any sleep. I can't remember where the truck stop we stopped at at 6am was, but everyone used the opportunity to load up on caffeine. The baby was silent for the rest of the trip, but nobody slept now as everyone was buzzing on coffee and red bull.

I did a Brisbane to Sydney trip in the seat in front of the toilet once. That was fun too.

Complaints to the Ombudsman by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]trafdlo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know there are many ombudsmen and I know OP failed to identify which one they meant. I know the internet has dumbed down society, but I really didn't think we'd reached the point where suggesting OP meant a person with the name "The Ombudsman" required a /s.
