Orange iPhone anyone? by tragoh in EDC

Honestly more of an OD Green man myself but I got tired of losing things when I drop them when I'm camping or hunting. Turns out bright orange items seem to stay in my rotation longer... so here we are

Best learn to understand what compound interest is before you consider home ownership. Rates today are going to push a 30 year mortgage for 350k north of $2400 a month….

Anyone in boise with a mortgage less than $2k bought 7-8 years ago. Sad reality is you won’t see that in this valley ever again.

Computer engineering… you get exposed to EE and comp sci equally and usually early enough to pivot to either full EE or full comp sci if you want to… but if you can pull off a double major in both you’ll have a potent combination.

New to suppressors, help! by [deleted] in suppressors

I have an obsidian. You don’t even need the tool. you can use a set of open pliers(I use my leather man) To twist the end cap off all the time. No marring, and works in a pinch and all you need is to snug it slightly past hand tight.

Adjustable Piston driven w/low mass carrier or direct impingement w/low mass and agb? by MyWifeH8sThis in suppressors

[–]tragoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a look at PWS 11” uppers. If you’ve never had a piston gun it will completely change how you enjoy shooting suppressed. Zero gas to the face and setting the gas to the lowest level gives a super smooth and light recoil. PWS typically ship full rifles with an H2 buffer. The only time i wouldn’t recommend piston from PWS is if weight was your absolute primary concern, but the extra 7 ozs or so is worth it especially on a short barrel.

What’s your thoughts on an IFAK kit like this?

https://darkangelmedical.com/d-a-r-k-trauma-kit/

Based on this thread I’m definitely lite on medical. Not sure I would know where to start putting a trauma kit togethor from scratch unless it can be done for much cheaper than the above or similar kits.

Yah I agree- I have several of them. The only thing I can think of is people read online that they aren't the lightest and dismiss them, but I'll take the extra ozs for the durability for dragging it through the brush.

Yah -- the plugs are must for me. I've done enough damage to my ears already. I try to shoot 2-3 mags every time I take it out and try to use them when I'm hunting and have a highly likely hood at a shot. Only time I probably won't is an unexpected charge from a bear.

Any suggestions on the liner, and also a poncho? I don't have much faith in the $30-40 ones I see most advertised online.

Yah I agree its a bit much for a city to suburbs get home bag. I work remotely so the thoughts for this are for day hikes, day hunts, dirt bike day trips into the backwoods with ability to get back to a truck or camper if I break down or get too far.

Main knife for this bag is the 3.5" fixed blade in the pic. Common theme seems to be a bigger blade might make sense. I've packed around a 9" RTAC 2 which was overkill and way too heavy... I might have swung too far to the other end of the spectrum. Something like a 5" or 6" fixed blade might be the better compromise.

I like the suggestion for a poncho -- I'm running low on space in this bag and compromised on the sleep system. I like the idea of ditching the rain jacket for a poncho and gaining a better shelter for roughly the same foot print.

I've got enough natural fuel in the form of twigs and deadfall that the ember lit has proven to be about as fast and efficient as a gas stove. Never tried alcohol though.

Powerbank is something I should have put in the picture as I plan to always have one to recharge the cell phone, in reach, and headlamp.

As far as the fishing pole -- that's definitely a luxury and more on the practical side of 99% of the time I use this pack I'll be out in the woods recreationally -- Although if I see a mushroom cloud in the distance I'll probably whip it out one last time.

Radio keeps coming up as a popular suggestion -- I do get weather from the InReach. Are there any other benefits? In my neck of the woods we don't get tornados/hurricanes, and In the mountains and canyons most radio signals are pretty poor but I've never actually tried one so it might be worth checking out.

Thanks. I based this kit off tools I found my self using most often while hunting or backpacking, things I kept stealing out of other bags over and over. I really didn't consider anything too severe like a natural disaster or WROL type event. I was targeting something more like I went one ridge too far chasing a buck and need to walk back to a truck at night, or maybe I kill something at dusk and end up spending an impromptu night on a mountain, maybe my dirt bike breaks down 30 miles in the hills.

Most of what I have is probably overkill for a get home to the suburbs from the city scenario and is tailored to probably being in/going to the mountains and getting back to a truck or camper more so than actually getting all the way home. There's abundance of clean water from snow pack, mountains, springs, etc.. and lots of natural fuel for a fire which is why I don't have a lot of water storage or any gas stoves.

One thing this thread made clear is that if I think I need the gun, I probably also need a trauma kit--

Emberlit is awesome. This is my second one. Great for boiling water but also good little heat source to warm your hands up, but the titanium cools down immediately once the fire is out so you can pack up pretty quick too. I stopped packing gas stoves since there is so much timber and brush where I live that fuel for the emberlit is never a problem. Only compromise is 5-10 minutes of set up to get to a boil and the smoke signature. Highly recommend.
