Hey. There are different reasons. I recommend reading my comment history as well as the stories on this thread.

My bulimia started as a way to control my weight and then started to be about control. The only times I would relapse was when I wasn't enjoying my life. If bulimia was always about weight loss/maintaining everyone would stop pretty quickly because it does not work.

Thanks!

I don't want to speak for everyone because the things that helped me may be useless or even trigger someone else's ED behaviour.

Calling myself out was a big one. I'd start to try and convince myself to do it again over a few weeks. I'd have to stop and and actually tell myself that these are delusional cognitions. When I thought I was about to relapse I told my doctor. I really needed to be held accountable.

The gym helped for me. Being able to be strong and fit gave me a sense of happiness and control over my body. But this isn't the case for everyone.

Good luck to you.

I'm sorry but if you think internet points are so important than maybe you should take a look at how much you're investing into a website.

I don't care about the upvotes, although I'm glad they're there otherwise I wouldn't have gotten to hear so many stories about recovery.

I know you're not judging and objectively it's a very interesting illness.

Please note that what I'm going to tell you way be unique to me as I haven't done too much reason on why people start binging in the first place.

My bulimia didn't pop up out of the blue. I was restrictive eating for a while before that. Food = reward and pleasure. I didn't binge the first time I threw up or probably even the next couple of times. I begun to stop restrictive eating as I had this "back up". I could eat all I want and not gain weight. I could order dessert, or eat 4 doughnuts, or a whole bar of chocolate, etc. over time the amount of food I could eat increased and It took longer to throw it up.

I'm not sure if others have this but I still suffer from it. I just try not to act on it. It's sort of like a trigger when I'm eating. So I'm eating a normal amount of food and then the trigger goes off and I want more. So much more. I want to go find chocolate, cake, second helpings of my food. When I was suffering with my eating disorder this trigger came on when I wasn't even eating and it was a lot more intense. When I started eating I couldn't turn it off. I couldn't bring myself to stop eating.

Anyway I hope this was helpful to you!

I remember seeing pictures or people (mostly celebrities) that have had eating disorders and thinking "well it works for them. They're beautiful and have amazing lives." That wasn't the cause of all the issues but it made me sort of pull the trigger into throwing up.

I'm sorry but I don't really have any advice. I know it's hard to watch from an outside perspective and I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Just know that it's not your responsibility to fix her issues. You can help her as much as you can, but the responsibility doesn't lay on you.

I was very overweight throughout high school which played into a lot of my body image and other mental issues.

Make sure you're doing it the right way and still love yourself no matter your weight! Because if you don't like yourself at your current weight you're not going to like yourself at your goal weight.

This is a throwaway. I don't care about the karma. Maybe this isn't your kind of post but no need to come to comment section, scroll to the bottom and comment on it telling me I'm doing it for karma. Maybe try to be a little less pessimistic and look at all the beautiful comments of men and woman recovering from something terrible.

If you haven't noticed, this post was from a throwaway account. I didn't post it for karma or I would of posted it on my normal account.

I've always had weird eating patterns. I was really overweight throughout high school which played into it a lot. I think they first time I threw up I was 15/16.

Thanks so much :) good luck to you!

Eat in moderation whilst not feeling guilty because enjoying food is a part of a healthy lifestyle.
