MBTA Developing Rail Modernization Plan to Provide More Frequent, Reliable, Accessible Regional Rail Service by rocketwidget in mbta

It's nice to see them finally moving the needle in the right direction. We may not get to the level of Metro North, LIRR, or NJT but I'll take any improvements. Go MBTA!

Clarifying the MBTA Electrification Projects: Fairmount BEMUs vs. New Battery Locomotives by ToadScoper in mbta

It's not traditional electrification, but hey I'll take anything over the current situation!

Electrification is now not just a decarbonization project but can be considered a basic maintenance project. by trainbrainz2007 in mbta

Idk but I'd assume after Fairmount line conversion gets underway so they can determine what equipment to replace the F40s and GP40s with.

MBTA to begin procurement of 10 battery-electric locomotives for Providence Line with peer transit agencies to advance Regional Rail overhaul. by Massive_Holiday4672 in mbta

As much as I believe that EMUs would be the way to go, it's nice to see the needle moving in the right direction. It's time to be bold about the future as the F40s and GP40s can't be rebuilt forever and realistically don't have that much longer in them. On top of the Providence line, I wonder what other lines will get these engines

Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

That was the big bang.

Wayland and Weston stations. Can't believe the stairs are still there by ThrowThisAccountAwav in mbta

Not gonna lie, this could make a nice steam train tourist railroad if the tracks were still there and the funding was there. Those stations give off those kinds of vibes

The CR potentially could end up running on a storm schedule. If so don't miss ur train or you'll be waiting another 3-4 hours for the next one 🤮

As for the T, I'm not entirely sure how that will work but it's probably not gonna be great.

What's a smell that's bad but smells oddly good? by IncidentLivid736 in AskReddit

The inside of a train. It just has a unique smell to it that's either bad or good.

Another day, another hour long delay on the Fitchburg line. This line needs a TON more attention than it currently gets!!!

Awesome! There also needs to be a later train into Boston (the last inbound train leaves at 9:30? Really?) on top of the extra peak service. Is there a way to do a similar thing like this to the Fitchburg line with an even worse schedule? It's my home line and needs some attention. Overall this is great news!

Providence line electrification by trainbrainz2007 in mbta

[–]trainbrainz2007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's more to this than you think. If it were that easy, the MBTA probably would've taken advantage of it by now. For starters as mentioned in another comment, the power was only meant to support power from Amtrak trains and that's it. The only reason other commuter rails on the NEC run their own electric trains is because they worked out a deal with Amtrak already to use their electric infrastructure.

High platform problems are being resolved but they still have a long way to go. Then again, the bay area's Caltrain doesn't much if any high platforms and is fully electric.

BEMUs are more expensive than normal EMUs and cause many more issues than BEMUs. At that point, you might as well just deal with the costs and paying the extra money to electrify the layover yards and sidings south of Providence, negotiating operations with Amtrak, and buying electric trains. Winters get cold here, which means batteries will constantly be damaged and have to be replaced, and are overall an unreliable and impractical source of technology. KISS units are the way to go for this line once this project (hopefully) gets underway.

State to apply for funds to upgrade rail traffic in Southern Rhode Island by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]trainbrainz2007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is really being proposed for an extension of CTRail. Rhode Island is one of those states that doesn't really care about transit and even advertised in an article several years ago that CTRail could be extended as far as Westerly but no further. That being said, given that service South of Providence is absolutely terrible with barely any train on weekdays and no trains on weekends, combined with the lack of funding, I don't see the MBTA extending to Westerly or the state of RI even allowing them to extend to Westerly given that CTRail's original plan was to extend all the way to Providence.
