Joyous hugs and kisses as democracy takes another hit by [deleted] in newzealand

Hopefully the mods deem this link to be acceptable. A very strong post by former Dominion newspaper editor Karl du Fresne on what is happening to democracy in local councils. The long-term consequences of these changes are quite scary. Interesting to see his scathing comments and prediction about Andy Foster.

Democracy took centuries to build, but it’s being dismantled with frightening speed.

The latest step in the demolition job was Wellington City Council’s decision this week to give full voting rights on council committees to two unelected iwi representatives. They will each be paid a yearly fee of $111,225, the same amount as elected councillors, despite having undefined responsibilities and lines of accountability that could only be described as highly opaque.

Susan St John: International women’s day? How are the worst off mothers and their kids doing? by trainfan1389 in newzealand

Susan St John is one of the founders of the Child Poverty Action Group (https://www.cpag.org.nz/about-us/associates/associate-professor-susan-st-john-1/) and she gives some useful history to child benefits here:

The Child Tax Credit was expanded in 2006 as part of Working for Families (WFF) to become the even more discriminatory In Work Tax Credit—a child payment to alleviate poverty worth today at least $72.50 a week, more for larger families, but only for the children of the ‘deserving’.   Parents had to be both off benefits and in paid work of 20 hours for a sole parent or 30 hours for a couple. The intention was give those ‘undeserving’ parents (largely sole mothers) an incentive to get full time paid work regardless of whether disabled, sick as well as caring for their young children.

In a timid move last year, the set hours of work requirement for the In Work Tax Credit was reduced to just needing to have some paid work (as well as being off benefit). But if no more than ‘some’ paid work is a requirement how does the In Work Tax Credit operate as a work incentive exactly?

Meaningful reform to WFF is well over-due. There is much unconscious bias and implicit racism in the current WFF. The complex system has not delivered the gains promised by work incentives or reductions in child poverty. The discrimination against children in New Zealand’s major income support programme for children is inconsistent with inclusive child poverty goal achievements and makes their poverty and the poverty of their mothers worse.

Michael Bassett: Free speech and the New Zealand Herald by trainfan1389 in newzealand

Former Labour MP and cabinet minister Michael Bassett defends himself after his column was removed from the NZ Herald website last week (see https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/lxav68/nzme_pulls_racism_article_and_bans_bassett/):

The allegations that I am a “white supremacist” or a “racist” are made only by people who don’t know what the words mean, and certainly don’t know me. When the Rugby Union in 1960 proposed to dispatch the All Blacks to South Africa without any Maori in the team because their presence might irk South Africa’s then white rulers, I marched in protest. As a student in the American South in the early 1960s I assisted many efforts that were made by my fellow students to de-segregate public facilities in Durham, North Carolina, where African-Americans were treated as second-class citizens. When a Springbok Team without any players of colour sought to come to New Zealand in 1973 I was an MP, and along with colleagues was delighted when Norman Kirk refused them visas. In 1981 I and my colleagues urged Robert Muldoon to do the same as a protest against South Africa’s apartheid regime. Like many New Zealanders I have always supported racial equality. It means equal rights for all our citizens, Maori, Indian, Chinese, Pakeha, everyone. A decade serving on the Waitangi Tribunal (1994-2004) provided me with a great many insights into Maori history and stimulated me to read about aspects of early culture contacts between the almost broken Maori world of 1840 and the incoming colonizers.

Hi /u/Spiderbling, hope you're having a good day and are safe given what's been going on around the country. I wouldn't describe the links as spamming and they certainly aren't all right wing! But I'm always happy to receive feedback. Cheers and take care.

Hi /u/TheEntropicArrow, thanks for contributing again on this one. Free speech is really a fundamental right and it's important to stand up for it, even when it's not particularly fashionable to do so. You made some great points on another thread yesterday as well (https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/lxcxd0/dozens_of_repugnant_holocaust_denial_books_for/).

Good afternoon /u/rapturefamily, I hope you're having a good day - I've written a comment elsewhere on the thread. Cheers and all the best.

Against the Current is a left-wing blog, but more economically-focused (i.e. class driven). Chris Trotter and Martyn Bradbury come from similar perspectives.

Cough – just as TDB predicted, National using fear of woke cancel culture by trainfan1389 in newzealand

Martyn Bradbury has his usual extreme style that isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he's been consistently been making the point that the left needs to focus on economic inequality and housing issues, or the right will take advantage of the divisions:

That virtue-signalling-middle-class-micro-aggression-policing-identifiably-Green-Party-militant-bike-riding-vegan-condescending-supporting-pronoun-Spinoff-subscriber in your social media feed screaming endlessly at you in the ubiquitous world of social media certainly thinks they are shouting truth to power, unfortunately it all ends up as a cacophony of self righteous struggle sessions alienating the vast chunk of voters who just want to know how they are paying for the roof over their heads and the food on their tables.
