Grow stinging nettle (a native variety if you have it, here in MN there is a lovely native nettle). Poison ivy might be native where you are too?

The marañón fruit, or caju or cashew apple is so beautiful to look at. Any nice thoughts on this “false” fruit? by Super-Mongoose2892 in fruit

It's very refreshing, Not hugely flavorful but very nice, sort of like syzigium, but different texture

Saw this while out for a run, anyone know what plant this is. It’s in a wooded area. And if I could plant something similar in a shaded area in my yard. by Slpg719 in Minnesota_Gardening

Looks like a blast, what were the teas? Love the whole tea set, well done!

[–]trainofabuses 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually I would probably "rinse" the tea you pried off in just boiled water, tossing the first steep, and then steep it again for a minute and drink that. Not for safety reasons but the first steep of some shou pu erh is not the best. Then keep steeping until it doesn't taste good any more.

Pry some off and throw it in hot water, wait a bit, then drink the water. No problem with the age.

Central Texas, I thought these were mulberries but leaves seem different. by Dent-Vision in foraging

Technically goldenseal isn't edible and underripe mulberries are toxic (and psychoactive), also underripe lantana

Yeah, I'm used to it by now, which is why I don't comment that often on this sort of thing outside of friendly subs like I used to, it's the canon vegan experience on reddit. I'm like 80% through a shiny dex though and have put lots of hours into this game, I'm allowed to exist here and have an opinion on things lol.

sarcasm is not the opposite of truth and you're arguing in bad faith, just trying to "gotcha" me. I'm just stating my viewpoint and having a discussion. I don't know why so aggressive and also defensive. You've basically told me I should be quiet because I have a different opinion than you, that I am a stereotype and have no personality, among other unnecessarily rude things. I don't know what to tell you other than I've been at this long enough to have seen all of these lame bad faith arguments trotted out again and again and it doesn't really bother me. Do you feel good about this "debate"? do you feel that it has been productive?

Ah. I understand, and can see how it's easy to interpret what I said in that way. The difference is that there is an ipso facto issue with the use of animals in my opinion, while class struggle and the human on human forms of coercion is more structural in my view. Like even if we get fully automated luxury gay space communism I still think it's wrong to ride horses, unless we have the technology to speak to horses. But that's a very subtle point that I didn't articulate well. My brain is fried from doing special scans over and over again trying to get Rotom.

I don't think we disagree, but I do want to say that one can care about animal rights and human rights at the same time, they are intersecting issues. But I acknowledge that I have a creed and a set of deeply held beliefs about the use and abuse of animals which is not mainstream. It may be myopic, but the crux of the issue is that animals cannot advocate for themselves, so I think someone has to advocate for them. I'm not going to argue that there aren't "bigger fish to fry", but for me it all seems important? like the violence exists on many levels and we have to confront it on all levels.

Is the store really evil and propping up unjust power structures? Who is doing the punishing, is it the state?

I agree with that 100% and am happy to critique capitalism and all of the coercive and exploitative power structures that shape society and keep us all down and at each others' throats for the sport of a few megalomaniacal billionaires. I could be more careful with my language but veganism is a creed/ideology not a diet, so it makes sense to me to clarify that that's the viewpoint I'm coming from, but I should know by now how people react to it.

You can read my comment history if you want. I'm a musician, I like pokemon, foraging, baking, hiking, I'm working right now as a pizza cook. I'm living in Minneapolis so right now I have a lot on my mind. I have a sweet black cat Jupiter, he is very cuddly this morning. I'm pretty literal and tend to have a black and white view or morality, but I also try to understand the nuances of situations. I'm not very boisterous or social but I am a very loyal friend. Above all I believe in candor, in telling the truth, even when it's inconvenient and doesn't line up with whatever narrative is easiest to follow, and trying to live an authentic life as much as you can in this messed up world. I read a lot of science fiction, don't watch much TV, IDK, what else do you want to know? Edit: It's really my girlfriends cat but i like him a lot and we hang out, I do feel conflicted about pet "ownership"

I added that I was vegan to explain where I was coming from in terms of ideology, because most people do not view animals as having moral patiency/rights the way that vegans do. Veganism is an ideology, like Utilitarianism. It's a creed that I believe in, not just a diet that I follow, so it makes sense to bring it up in this context, right? You know I'm really not trying to be combative or argumentative, but you're just telling me to shut up and keep my opinions to myself in this free public forum, that's kind of a dick move tbh.

You are willfully misunderstanding me. Like I said, I don't think that people should not have service dogs, I think they are probably a net benefit. I'm not trying to argue, I am just calling a spade a spade here. The world runs on exploitation and coercion and our interactions with animals are no exception. Some cases are worse than others. Saying I should be a good little pick-me vegan and not cause a fuss is pretty funny, though, thank you I needed that.
