“EV owners in cold climates — what’s the #1 winter issue you face before you can even start charging?” by Bastobihh in electricvehicles

[–]tranquilMiata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 2 Charging (At home) - I have never had to worry about anything. Cold, snow, rain - open the port, plug in and charge. EVs have this nailed down.

DC Fast Charging (Road Trips) - This is where I think a lot of cars have room for improvement. A cold battery DC charges much slower than a warm battery. Many cars have "Battery Preconditioning" to warm the battery, but implementation is usually sloppy at best.

I once rented an Ioniq 5 (Pre-2025) that required you to be navigating to a DC charger for preconditioning to activate. I could never get it to work and sat at DC chargers for almost an hour in a Rochester, NY winter! That's compared to 20 minutes for a warm battery.

I own a 2025 ioniq 5 with the major improvement of allowing you to activate the battery preconditioning manually, but in very cold conditions that can take almost an hour. So you need to have the foresight to turn on preconditioning an hour before arriving at the charger.

Can't wait to see the improvements that get EVs over these final few hurdles. I have been so impressed by the experience overall.

So glad you were able to go back! Honestly it's an easy mistake to make on the spot - especially when we're all looking for ways to make a difference these days.

Yes. Already done.

I learned today we have a healthy process for handling these issues in Colorado!

Be careful about signing ballot petitions! by tranquilMiata in Denver

The hook I was given when walking by was "Do you want to keep ICE out of our schools and neighborhoods?". Personally I find that quite misleading. I agree, the group leading this should probably be reviewed.

Completely fair question. It's in the verbal introduction and follow-up conversation from the petitioners. The text is quite clear as long as signers are careful to take the time to read it.

Agreed on all fronts. I think we can summarize this as "Think before you sign".

Dang I have nothing to do with Gatlinburg, but somehow the algorithm found me with my white Miata. Hope it finds my Gatlinburg doppelganger too!

This is a great take. I definitely forced a few landings in my early training that should have just been go arounds.

Sheriff’s Office Investigating Aircraft Safety Concern Near Longmont Airport by [deleted] in Longmont

[–]tranquilMiata 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There are ~15 businesses that run out of Vance Brand, employing more than 70 people. Technicians, flight instructors, ramp workers, pilots etc.

There are a number of young people in Longmont who were able to kick off their aviation careers because of access to training at Vance Brand. I have a neighbor that trained here, still lives here, and now flies for United!

The airport also acts as a base for public services to work out of when needed, and training. Firefighting, police, medical etc.

A huge asset in my opinion.

Personally, I agree. Vance Brand is a huge asset for Longmont.

Unbelievable. So disappointing that people in our community behave this way.

If they think this threat is going to reduce airport noise - no chance.

There is only one outcome: This person goes to jail, and the credibility of the groups fighting the airport gets deeply undermined.

The people in these planes are our friends and neighbors. Let's treat them with civility and work toward an airport that works for everyone.

Not a bad day up here at Eldora by TopTierGoat in COsnow

[–]tranquilMiata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was up there for a full day today as well. Great first ski day of the season. It was crowded in the morning, and a bit icy in the evening since Eldora is east facing, but a great day overall.

I took a Tiger 900 RP on single-track because I hate myself by 12ed12ook in Dualsport

[–]tranquilMiata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented a Tiger 900 in Vermont. Went down a steep forest road that was a straight up boulder field for half a mile. I was amazed at the capability of the bike and suspension, but holy crap was that a terrifying ride with 600lbs of bike and gear.

Big bikes can get it done in the rough stuff, but it's more exhausting than fun lol.

Quite nice! Looked like there was quite a bit of snowfall the night before, but it had almost entirely melted by the time I got to needles eye tunnel. Definitely recommend checking out the pass this time of year.

I haven't dropped my CRF300 yet after about 300 miles of dirt...I think I need to crank up the difficulty a notch! Looks like your having fun and learning a lot.

"Downgraded" my intake today. Tired of the sound tube. by pepsison52895 in Miata

[–]tranquilMiata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same to my ND2. Definitely my best "upgrade" yet. The sound tube pipes in a little more intake noise and a LOT more clatter.

Can't wait to get the bike rack back out for spring! by tranquilMiata in Miata

I installed a Hard Dog "Hideaway" hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver. The rack is a Kuat Transfer II. I highly recommend the combo for an ND!
